BANNER,
Arather novel occurrence took
place near New Hope, last Satur
day. It was that of a rail-splitting
and quilting combined. A crowd of
men and boys came with their
mauls and wedges, and a gocdly
number of ladies assembled at the
house with needles and -thimbles.
Suflice it to say, the affair was a
success. All went home at night
satisfied with a good day’s work
and a sumptous repast,
~ Thé young people of this com
munity had a party the evening of
the 14th inst. Everything passed off
smoothly, until some of the young
men, who had been drinking too
freely,began to use profane lan
guage to the young ladies who had
bravery enough to refuse their at
tentions, This #poiled the whole
affair, and the youg ladies left the
scene as quickly as possible. Let
airls take a firm stand against
such young men, and if they do
not reform, the girls will at least be
freegd from their company. |
If all runaway matches met withi
the fate of the one lam about to
elate, no doubt they would be less
‘requent, Two cousing, not far from
this ‘place, had arranged to get
mattied on a certein Sunday, Ac
coxdingly, on Sundav morning, the
young man #alled under the pre
tenge of carrying hi¢ intended
bride to church; but some mem._
ber of the family divining the in
‘tentions of the pair. interfered just
as the gallant groom was assisting
her in the bugg, carried her back
nto the house, and let ‘her pweet
heatt go his way feeling liko a
whipped school hov. However, he
guccecded in carrying off her hat,
thinking “that "it. might be the
means of seeuring the girl at a fu
‘ture day, But when hé went to re
turn the hat,another member of
the family, and not she, came out
to getit, and so he was again dis
appointed.

SIE MARRIED A DRUUKARD
" Invefusing a bill of divorce to a
woman who had married and then
deserted a drunkard, the Towa Su
srome Court said: “She chose a
drunkard for a husband, and she
mght to digcharge the duties of a
Irunkard’s wife. She does not show
that her personal safety of cven
her well-being required her to have
him, She doubtless would have
lived mote comfottable in the so
ciety of a sober nian, but she ought
ty hive eansidered, and doubtless
did congider, the discomforts of a
drunken husband when she mar
ried the inebriate, ‘But she urges
that he promised reformation be

a druniken man are alwavs broken.
