The Pernicious Effects of Spirituous
Liquors.
Vegetation has united and incorporated
i ■: the grain by means of air and‘Water,
? irituous and cartly elements, which,
' ten combined, form a sweet and nour
t iting substance. If this intimate junc
>n is destroy'd or resolved by fermenta
t nu, the spirituous part is separated from
i o cartly which is then deprived of its
i ody and is no longer a sweet, nourishing
distance.
It produces a spirit which destroys like
fire. Thus brandy and spirits are made.
\ few hundred years ago the destructive

Was found out, and it is three hundred
since brandy was distilled from grain.
In the beginning it was considered as
: Lysic. It did not. however, gain any de
« ee of general request till the close of the
! st century, or rather the last fifty years
i it it has become a universal beverage
1 > the great detriment of mankind.
Our forefathers, in former times, who
d no idea of brandy, were quite diffei
dit to what we are. They were much

therefore, a down-right falsehood that
biandy, as a common beverage, is useful,
good and necessary.
Our forefathers lived without brandy,

is much better, in order to avoid temp
la ion, to drink none at all, for, believe
me, brandy deprives everybody who ad¬
dict themselves to the moderate daily use
, it, of health. It irapel's some to quit
their homes and to abandon their wives
; ml children; entails on its wretched vo
t n ies misery and diseases, which may de

It has been .observed in different coun¬

ty of brandy consumed. It was this that
induced an Indian in North America, of

amongst the Indians by the English, ten¬
ded to corrupt mankind, and destroy hu¬
mility. “They have given us,” said he,

Children and young persons who drink
brandy, or other spirituous liquors, be¬

MOHEK AFTER MR. BROWS.
He also Touche** up Hippie**.
Mil. Editor:—I t seems curious to mo
dat some people are so billyus anyhow.
I was a readin’ along tudder day in your
beluved. paper and my eyes fell on ahead
in’ like dis, “Mr. Brown’s views on de
j sub-treasury, etc.” I am surprised at dat
feller, certain. He say he is frequently
; asked if he is opposed to de liance. Well,
well, don’t dat look funny? dat de people
wonldbo askin’our most substaneh liance
man if he is opposed to do liance? Why
dat would almost make me mad. Why
don’t somebody ask Livingston if he is
opposed to do liance? Case they know
j he is not. You sec dar?
Oh, how a feller can find fault wid ud¬
der people when they beats him for an
] office. He seems to he familiar wid de
obligations, but Mr. Brown, how come
de Third party contrary to de obligations?
What you take up de obligations to fight
de Third party for? I don’t think they
say anything for or against it; hut leaves
us free to act as we please, so far as pol
itics are concerned.
i r ou say, “Truth will prevail.” Well
den, the truth is, you ought to have been
beat in do race you run when you made
like you ought to be lected. I specks
tint’s so., case when I sees a man so frind
ly and conspicuous in de liance, and jes
i s soon as he gets beat he forsake his
friends and jine their enemies.I clucks he
was only wanting tie sugar dat was in de
office. 1 hope I is mistaken, but dat s
de way it looks to a man up a stump.
Well, „ , have been , mislead . , „,
you say we
( * ul1 " bere is wo gone? I ou seems to
want to throw somethin’ at Livingston,
Well, Mr. B., I specks brudder L. is as
good a democrat as you is, den de truth
will prevail and you know , lie , lias prev.u.
de time, but you make like he de
c fives the people. My friend, truth don’t
deceive.
You ask, “What are we organized for,
is it to divide the vote of the solid
South?” I answer, yes it is to divide de
vote of de solid South. Where, as we
hab been votin’ for do money kings, de
plutocrats, and de plug hats, we is agwine
to let dem vote for demselves and we
will vote for men who will legislate for
de benefit ob de laborin’ people. It is io
unite de laborin’ people of the Norf, Souf
Ear t and West, and do away wid section¬
al strife between do poor. If de rich like
you wants to quarrel wid de Norf for free
in’ do niggers, you can des quarrel as
much as you please, but we aint. We
loves de Souf and we loves do Norf all
alike, and we specks to get help from
dem to come out from under tie oppres¬
sion wo is under. Wo tried democracy
and we don’t like de way de democrats,
do. Dcy dcs nominate who dey please
den say you jes slick to him or you are
no democrat, and den if de liance has
anything to do wid de nomination they
fly tie track and organize a “Jeffevsonian
party.” What about dat, Mr. B? Truth
prevailed did it?
Yes; we do want to disolve prejudice.
We do want to Lind together more inti¬
mately the tics of brothel hood, but we
don’t want to use de liance to rievate a
few big headed democrats or publicans,
but we come together in de people’s par
ty, democrats’ and republicans, cryin’ for
r iiuf, and you say hush cryin’ for roliif:
cry for de democratic party, cry for dc
rt publican party, but we aint stopped
yet. I am sorry you got scared so bad
about our leaders, case they is old resnr
rcc-ted demagogs; case they do wrong,
say wrong dat don't give ns relief, but
what did they do? Oh, they formulated
de Ocala platform. Yes, and I am KO
glad they did. You don't deject to de
Ocala platforn do you? Shorely you don’t.
If you do. I is shamed of youivef. You
say you took upon your self an obliga¬
tion and de president said it would not
conflict with your political nor religious
views. Did you take dat ogligation? jf
so didn’t you promise to support the con¬
stitution? Den it says to constantly strive
to secure entire harmony and g iod will
among all mankind and brotherly love
among ourselves; to suppress personal,
local, sectional and national prejudices,
etc. Js you doin’that? No; but you is
a fighiin’ de liance ami its leaders. Fight-
in’ for tie democratic party: tryin’ to cre¬
ate more strife, more diseord, more ha¬
tred. Tryin’ to make de liance fall out
wid their leaders. Now, if I was you, I
would go hack to my lodge and take dat
obligation over, or I would get me some
stufi dat would make me iliiig up de
whole thing. I guess a little Ocala tea
would do dat for you; if not, take de sub¬
treasury hill and squeeze a little juice out
of it. Dat will fix you up all right. It
kills or cures every time. |
Now, Mr. B., I have nothing to say
against democracy. Hove the principles,
hut to say I can’t he a democrat in a peo¬
ple’s party needs an explanation that I
don’t think you can make. Talk about
walkin’ in de orchard, de garden and do
field and makin’ your garments smell
good! Iflaint mistaken de democrat
party and de republican party is been
close to a skunk, case I can’t hardly
stand de way they smells. They have j
passed laws dat don’t even taste good to
a laboring man, and its got all over their
c i 0 tfi e s. Look out, brudder li., or you’ll
some on you.
You knoleges dat de principles of tie
liance is pure and good, and I am certain
dat men jes as honest and jes as truthful
and wise as yon is, says dat de subtreas
ury bill and de Ocala platform aie conge¬
nial with liance principles, and dat they
are democratic, too. Some one said they
were a ] s0 republican,
Now, my brudder, as to do hero, Lon,
j spose he is as good liance man as dein
w ] u , wanted to vestigate liis character in
de big convention. If bis friends is nu¬
merous enough to set down on a few Hot
headed enemies, who went there on pur¬
pose to create disturbance and have a row
instead of peace and harmony. No true
liauceman will care, and I have not been
able to find one true liauceman that says
there was any charges to vestigate. But
what did lie say and do about Wynn’s
case? Did be say^tliat lie was innocent?
Did he ask for him the place again?. I
was not there but would like to know. If
ho did the hack of my hand is to him.
Well, brudder Brown, I don’t know if
somebody ought not to bring charges agin
him for holdin , on to <le democrat party,
case all these old bosses dat belongs to it
is opposed to our measures of relief, and
de fiance is in fatal' of de third party, and
if brudder Lon don’t jine in wid us, we
will kick like wild mules forelong.
Agin, brudder Fr wn, you say “why is I
a democrat or why do I support the dem¬
ocratic party?” You say because it is
the salvation of the South. If dat be
true, den I guess its hope is not well foun¬
ded, and de people is widout hope and
wirlout salvation, case hope is made up of
two words, viz: desire with expectation
True we have a desire t > be saved from
the oppressive hand that is upon us, but
we do not expect to be saved by the dem¬
ocratic party, for we have tried them to
our sorrow, and no relief lias yet come.
I now say amen to your prayers that you
prayed when you said “may de good Lord
incline our hearts in de way of truth and
konwiedge,” and add to dat prayer dis
much, “and cleanse de heart of a man
from hatred and revenge against de liance
jos case lie got beat.” I wish to 1 e ir o r
y° ur ™pentencc, then we will forgive
you, and when we get as much confidence
in you as we used to have, then we will
vote for you again.
Well, brudder hippies, I is glad ob yer
complements on my pints in my letters.
You jes git er lied an’ prazedem as much
ez yer pieze. I iz got two much sense ter
take dc big lied ober yer little wright ob
I fosses dat I nose sum, but eb
vy body dat knows bof our noses, knows
dat yon noses more dan tow like me,
const ' uen 'y you are able to flatter. As
to de dialect dat I uses, I specks ef yer’ll
ax yer kinfolks what any word in my let¬
ters means dey can tell yer ties ez eazzy.
Case you kin sing an’ cat fried chicken,
and be opposed to de sub-treasury, dat
don’t make yer (what is it?) dierleet; o
very line. If I iz black, dat don’t sfcr< y
niy thinkin’ faculties. Now, you be care¬
ful, or you will cause the lovata l\bi
supriovus obliquinasi to jerk and you
will look like you was deformed.
