—ln response to a request from
General A. P. Stewart inviting
such citizens to meet with him
as were interested in the forma
tion of a branch of the national
volunteer reserve, a number of
representative citizens met yes
terday afternoon.
Geneaal Stewart made a stir
ring address in which he declar
fed that it is now probably only
a matter of days when we shall
be involved in war with a for
eign foe, He pointed out that
even that little patch of ground,
Spain had a standing army of
850,000, which when placed
on a war footing would
amount to 1,512,197, while the
United States had a standing
army of 27,532, war footing
140,491,
He then explained the object
of the volunteer reserve move
ment. After further discussion
a mass meeting of all loyal citi
zens who desire to co-operate in
the movement was c lied for
next Saturday night.
