lowing letter was written by Gan.
William Ludlow, who commanded
the American right, to Gen. < ar
cia, after .he fall of Santiago:
“Near Santiago Cuba, July 15.

been a fortunate solution ci the

ing of the city, the departure of
the Spaniards and the restoration
of peace in Santiago.
“Permit me to say to you that
your forces have performed most
notable service and their work has
been invaluable to us not only in
scouting and procuring informa
tion but in the vital matter of the
construction of trenches and de
fenses for the investment of the
city.
“Your people have accomplished
an immense amount of this work
with almost no appliances what
ever, and have cheerfully surren
dered the use of them to our own
troops, when the continuation of
the investment renderedit necess
ary to move our regiments 1 .rward
to the right.
“I make this statement, Gen
eral personally, and not officially
because lam but a subordinate
commander but do so for the rea-|

WANDERER LANDS THREE
TIMES.
Key West, Fla , July 30.—Ihe
boat Woodbury brings informa
tion that the steamer Wanderer
succeeded in landing part of an
expedition a abort distance west
of Havana, in Dinar del Rio Prov
ince, near the point where she was'
driven off last Saturday.
The Wanderer then went east
ward and a second landing was
effected at a point about 20 miles
east, of Havana. A third landing
was made near Cardenas.
