The Augusta Herald wants a

The above little chppling from the
Constitution’s report of the joint de
bate between Hon. W. Y. Atkinson
ai <1 Gen. C. A Evans at Hawk.nvilli
and it appear ing in one of the strong
est, Evans papers in the state, o!
course stamps it as the truth.
The writer has no axe to grind, is
not an aspirant for political h n >rs,
but being m a position to know the
immense amount of good done to
dear aid Georgia by Mr. Douglass
Glessner, the editor above referred
to, and his brother, Maj \V. L
Glessner, it makes one « blood boil
io read such as the above.
Is it a crime to be a No ithern man
that it has t® be burled into one's
testh at every opportunity. Oris it
oitly because Mr. Glessner happens
to be opposed to Gen Evans that
tie above attack is made on hitn?
1 assert baldly that Mr. Glessnei
has been of more direct benefit t>
Georgia in the few years that he
has resided among us than Gen .
Evans, though the latter has been
resident of the state for ever sc
many years. Ask the citizens oi
Spalding county to whom they ar
indebted for the ma. y Western

and they will tell you .
Can it be possible that a minis
ter of the Gospel has to stoop to
arouse the prejudices of the Sout! -
ern people against a Northern man
just because this man is opposed
to his candidacy for the governor
ship and advocates the claims of
his opponent? Do the people of
Georgia propose to put such a man
in charge of the affairs of the
state? This is an age of progress,
and if Georgia proposes to keep
her position as Empire State of
the South, let her be sure to pul a
live, progressive man at the helm
