penitentiary has just been learned.

It was their purpose to make the |
attempt this week, as the guards '

They intended to kill the guards
and take their weapons aud kill
the guards on the wall between
male and female wards and make
escape by passing over the
wall.
The warden placed the plotters

Shoots His Wife and Wounds His
Mother at Jacksonville, Fla.
Jacksonville, Fla., Sept. 5.-
William Hayes, a dissolute young
fellow, shot and killed his wife
and serously wounded his inother
[ in-law at midnight last night. The

and the crime was not known until
this morning. Hayes was only mar
ried a year and a half ago.

Seven People Burned to Death at
Marengo, Minn.

fires at Marengo, a few miles north
of Ashland. The bodies have
reached that citv, but are too bad

dead are : Frank Bergrom, Isaac
Towney, Mrs. Ida Towney, Elisha
Towney, Wm. Towney, Jessie Tow
ney, and Walter Gtaft; the last
four were children.
General Wheeler Renominated.-

Gen. Joseph Wheeler was renomi
nated here yesterday for congress
on the first ballot. This will be the
general’s eigth term in cohgress, as
his renomination means an elec
tion.
He made a ringing democratic
speech and the delegates to the
convention were aroused to the
highest pitch of enthusiasm by his
eloquent words.
