Dodge-Wont pan out. The Col
ored Brother Asked for Re
cognition on The Ticket
in the Second
Konvention.
Newnan, Ga. September 26. —
About three weeks ago the thud
partyites of Coweta held a county
convention and nominated two
candidates for the legislature—J
D. Simms and Abselem Leigh. Mr
Simms afterward withdrew from
the race and Mr. Leigh was found
to be ineligible.
A second meeting was held today
for the purpose of putting out an
ther ticket, when the convention
assembhd a colored delegation
created much consternation by de
manding that the third party put
one negro on the ticket.
The suggestion created a big
sensation and was strongly ap
proved by the colored representa
tives in the meeting. Dr. McGee,
the chairman, tried to put a ques
tion by declaring the speaker out
of order.
He took his seat hut was imme
diately followed by A. C Banks, a
well known local colored leader
who charged the third party with
unfair dealing and made a red-hot
speech denouncing the methods by
which it was sought to capture the
negro vote, and give' nothing in
return for it.
The meeting has been the sensa
tion of the day. and the negroes
are fighting mad.
The convention finally nomina
ted but one candidate —P, L. Red
wine.

Brunswick, Ga., September2s.
—The biggest sensation of the day
in politics culminated tonight at
8 o’clock, when Mayor Harry F.
Dunwoody arose in a meeting that
J. B. Osborne, the one-eyed popu
list, was addressing, and de
noucced him as an unmitigated
liar* breaking up the meeting and
causing Osborne to swallow his
words,
The Morning Call, a new paper
just started here, started the sen
satioii'today by publishing, under
glaring heartiness, a story of an
affidavit made against Osborne to
the effect that on a recent visit to
Brunswick he entered a house of
ill fame and was seen driving in
public with a scarlet woman.
Osborne tonight delivered a pop
ulist harangue and concluded by
saying he would neither deny or
affirm the charges, and denounced
the Call for publishing his private
movements. He then followed his
virtual confession by making allu
sions to certain matters which
were brought out in a divorce suit
here some years ago.
These allusions affected a rel
ative of Mr. Dunwoody and at the
time the divorce case was tried
they were denied. Tonight when
Osborne referred to this case the
hall was packed and jammed to
the doors. Policemen were present
to preserve order, but in the back
part of the hall Dunwoody, arose
and said:
“ Tho«e“ statements heve been
denied and I say they are lies.”
“Well” said Osborn I was told so
any way.”
“ Lt makes no diffierence who you
saidjDunwoody; ‘‘they are lies
and you tell a lie when you repea)
them. You shall not stand there
sir, and malign a mau in his
absence aud I say you shall stop it,
Duuwoody was then odvanciog
to Osborn and the police closed in -
Osborn said ’’Well,l’ll not say it
then.
In the meantime the crowd be
gan to make for the door, while
friends of Dunwoody aud Osborue
bagan to crowd around each.
All trouble was stopped, how
ever, aud a.big yell seut up for
Dunwoody. The crowd broke away
and no fight occured .
Later developments make Osboru
affiir more sensational. As he was
makeing his way from the hall to
the train, Judge Spencer R. Atkin
son publicly caught Osborn aud
hit him several terrible blows be
fore friends pulled him off’
Judge Atkinson was the person
Osborn refered to iu his speech to
night. Judge Atkinson and Dun
woody are related and the prom
inence of the parties will make
the incident highly interesting.
