a flash Mrs. Ikard pulled a
revolver from her pocket and fired
three shots at Mrs Gillis in quick
succession.
The first was aimed high above
her head; then she lowered the
weapon, aiming it straight at her.
The second ball entered Mrs. Gil
lis’s left arm just below the elbow
and came out on the opposite side.
1 It entered the arm again above
the elbew, coming out at the left
breast very near the heart. The
wounded woman ran to Anthony
Smith’s near by, and Dr. Howell
dressed the wound.
Chief McLelland arrested Mrs.
Ikard on Elm street as she was
making her way out of town, and
she is now at the County Jail,
charged with shooting with intent
to kill. George Ikard and his wife
separated some time ago, and
since then she and William Lilly
are charged with having been inti
mate.
R SLEEPING INFANT
Rescued From a Burning Baby Car
riage by its Mother.
An accidedt that might have
been attended by more serious re
sults was happily averted at the
residence of Micheal Nolan, No.
61 hike street, shortly alter 6
o’clock last evening.
Mr. Nolan is the proud father of
a bouncing baby boy and last eve
ning the youngster was terrporari
ly tucked away in a baby car
riage.
On a table close beside the bug
gy reposed a lamp. An open win
dow furnished a draft, and a sud
den gust of wind caught the frail
drapery that adorned the buggy top
and carried it up over the lamp
chimney.
The fl ime quickly ignited this
and was fast devouring tn« top
when Mrs. Nolan chanced to enter
the r.'om.
Q iick as a flash the sleeping in

danger that threatened it, and
whic would have quickly termi

-A pail of water extinguished the
blaz l -, but the excitement attending
e incident and the fortunate res
cue of the little one will be long
remembered by its parents.

FIFTY DEAD BODIES
Follow in the Wake of the Storm
Near Key West.
Jacksonville, Fla., Oct. 5. — A
special from Key West says that
fifty dead bodies, victims of the
wrecks occurring on the reefs du
ring the recent storm, have been
washed ashore on the island.
The dead are evidently sailors
from the vessels destroyed, al
though the length of time which
has elapsed since the storm has
rendered the bodies unidentifiably
through decomposition. The prob
abilities are that many more of
these ghastly evidences of the
hurricane’s fury will be brought
to light in a few days.
