THE HUSTLER OF ROME* FRIDAY OCTOBER 5 1864
HE WEAKENED,
After Being Sentenced for insult
ing a Judge.
Terre Haute, Ind., October 5.
A sensational scene occurred in
the Circuit Court this afternoon.
Judge Taylor had just overruled
the motion for a new trial of Dr.
L. C. Griffith, convicted of shoot
ing Philip Lebrerer, when Samuel
R. Hamill, his attorney, arose and
denounced the ruling as a stab at
the vitals of the law, done to please
a few persons.
Judge Taylor asked the lawyer
if he meant his words as an affront
to the Court, and Hamill said it
couldfbe interpreted as the Court
chose, and if the Court misunder
stood his language he would repeat
it, which he did.
Then Hamill reduced his lan
guage to writing and handed it to
the Clerk of the Court. Judge Tay
lor fined Hamill SSO and ordered
him to jail for 24 hours. Later
Hamill apologized and the sentence
was remitted.
