TONIGHT
The Vanderbilt Glee Club t Nev
in's O-era House.
Tonight at Nevin’s Opera house
the great musical and social event
of the season will be seen.
The Vanderbilt Glee Club will
be the attraction, and the theatre
will be crowded with a brilliant
and fashionable audience.
The box sheet at Yeiser’s shows a
heavy advance sale of seats, but
a few good ones still remain. Those
who expect to attend had best se
cure seats at once.
Tonight at the Armstrong Hotel
from 10 to 1 o’clock the College
hoys will be tendered a reception,
and it is sure to be the most fash
ionable event of the season.
All lovers of good music should
not fail to hear the Glee Club to
night. It is not often Romans
have an opportunity of hearing
such an excellent musical organ
ization.

LIBELLED THE TIMES
Arrested at the Instances of the
Chattanooga Tinies.
Spring City, Tenn., December
21. —Deputy Sheriff Simon Adams
of Chattanooga, arrived here this
morning, and arrested W. P. Me"
Donald and Jr H. Hilton, proprie
tors of the Spring City Herald,
for criminal libel against the Chat
tanooga Times.
The papers were taken out be
fore Squire J. T. Hill, of Chatta
nooga. Mr. Adams will leave to.
night for Chattanooga with Messrs.
McDonald and Hilton. The charge
against them is that they publish
ed an article saying the Times re.
ceived S3,OCX* for supporting the
republican ticket in ths guberna
torial campaign.
TILLMAN ON THE FLOOR.
Columbia, S . C., Djo. 21. Ths
iasideuts of the dav in the ’house
today were the address of ex-Gov
«rnor Tillman and the decision of
the municipal police bill. Ex-Gov
ernor Tillman was invited to a
seat on the floor of the house and
asked for an address, which he de- '
lirered, but which was merely a
speech of thanks for the honors
conferred upon him.
The municipal police bill
brought on a very g*nera' discus
eion. All of the conservatives op
posod it, but the reformers almost
unnanimously supported it. No re
former in the house has dared raise
his voice against the bill.

LA BELLE FATIMA
• The Fascinating Oarcer Killed in
a Railway Accident in Europe.
Tacoma, Wash., Dec. 21—La
Belle 1' atima, the facinating mus
cle dancer, who caused the greatest
sensatien of the Inter State Fair,
and whose sloe-like eyes aud grace
ful form won the hearts of hun
dreds of Pacifiic coast men, is
dead. She wag no less popular at
l he M idwinter Fair.
Sbs was killed some weeks ago in
a railroad accrdent in Europe. Her
j body was mangled almost beyond
recognition. Just whe.e the acc
dent took place is not known heis
The information that has reectied
this city is ineagei.
Little Gugela, a fifteen year old
Assyria girl who lives in Tacon a
and who also danced in Fatima
troupe at the Turkish Theater dur
ing tha fair, received th® rumor ot
her death. It was conveyed ia a
letter from Assyria.
Fatima’s parents live in Assyria
and diriug her American tour she
sent to them over '52,500, besides
which she had a comfortable sum
•laid sway for herself. She left her •
after the fair closed and was jour
neying across Europe when tie
railway accident that ended b r
lifo occured.
She said that of all American
cities she had visited she liked Sau
Franoisco best. It was there during
the Midwinter Fair that she receiv
ed a large salary for six months,
and saved the greater part of the
money. She left that city in July
and, with other dancing girls, made
a tour of Oregon before coming to
the Interstate Fair.
GIRL NOT DEAD.
But Downs Will Suffer a Terrible
Death When Caught.
Morrillton, Ark., Dec. 21.
Nothing new has developed in the
negro rape case in the past 24
hours beyond the fastening the
crime beyond a doubt, on the per
petrator. He is named Downs, and
lives about half a mile from his
victim's house. Contrary to yester
day’s reports, the girl is still alive
and not so badly injured as first
reported.
The scoundrel was scared off by
the approach of some parties be
fore he accomplished hie purpose.
His father has been arrested and is
now under guard. Every bridge
and road crossing in the country is
being guarded and he will be cap
tured within the next twenty-f»u r
hours.
There is little doubt but what
the citizens will be so aroused
when they see the culprit as to let
the law go to the winds. Some hot
heads freely advised burning at the
stake, but this will hardly be done.
Even the negroes are aroused ever
the matter and are joining i» the
hunt.
