At last the reports from the New

THE GOVERNORSHIP.
There are a number of names be
ing mentioned in connections with
the next race for govnor of Geor
gia. It is of course quite prema
ture to ba agitating the question,
but the legislature being in session
the friends of each prospective
candidate are seizing upon the oc
casion to ascertain if possible what
are the chances for their respective
favorites It would be assuming
entirely too much to even suppose
that public sentiment had as yet
crystaliz d on any one man.
But notwithstanding that it is,
as yet far in advance of the time
for selecting our 'next governor,
and the further fact, that the
friends o 5 each gentleman whose
name has been mentioned in this
connection, have been and ere ac
tively at work, yet there seems to
be a very decided undercurrent of
sentiment favoring Secretary ofi
the State Al en D. Candler, as a
candidate forth ■ governorship.
What is most remarkable about
this sentiment , is the fact that it
comes from all part of the State
and seems confined no particular
section or locality.
There is one fact connected with
the selection of our next governor,
which is being made manifest
more and more each day as this
matter is talked of, and that is,
the people are going to take a big
hand and a most decided part in
determing who our next governor
shall be.—Athens Banner.

RECIPROCITY IS PLEADED
President McKinley’s Reqie-t
Promptly Tpuned Down.
. .
Chicago, I 1., Nov 9—Tho cam
pft’gn in tho interest of Mrs. May
brick i« bein' pushed in this city
Mrs, Helen Densmore, lately ar-i
rived from Lond' n, and who is
now stopping at the Auditorium
in this city, to an Associated Press
representative to-day made the
folio” ing statement:
“When President McKinley, a
few months since, addressed a note
to tin English Government
through Ambassador Hay, request
ing Mrs. Maybrick’s release
as a matter of international cour
tesy, I had great hope. The ques
tion of Mrs. Maybrick’s inno
nocence or guilt was entiiely ig
nored, her release was asked as a
reciprocal favor. John Bright
once asked President Lincoln for
a reprieve for a convict whose
guilt was unquestioned—a man
who had plcttod a conspiracy
against both life and property
during the late civil war Mr.
Lincoln cheerfully granted the re
quest, I have be-'U informed that
President Cleveland granted a
favor during his second terin .
The English Government re
quested, and replied that they had
no reason to reopen the case of
Mrs. Maybrick. President Mc-
Kinley did not ask that the
case be reopened, he sitnnly re
quested her release on the ground
of international courtesy; Not
withstanding all previous publi
cations in this connection, the
facts to-day are that Mrs. May
brick ’s case is no nearer a solution
so far as the release is concerned
by the British Government, than
it had been at any time, and I hope
(hat President McKinley will fol
olwthis mutter up by explaining to
the British Government that he
did not ask to hav |the case re
opened, that he simply asked the
favor of an international recipro
cal courtesy, and that he will in
sist upon a specific answer to a
specific n quest. ”
