In Memory of J. L. Wil
liams. f
~ Words of kindness and love
can’t reach him now; but with
the editor’s permission we will
talk a little about his worth, and
how his tragic going away has
brought loneliness and sorrow to
many who knew and loved him
outside the circlecof kindred and
family, dearer to him than life.
During our residence in this
community we have heard no un
kind word spoken of him. Decar
Doc, was not an angel--neither(
are we—and none of us need be
apprehensive of an angel-killer
come this way. Our relations to
him brought us close together,
and he was always approachable,
kind and responsive to our coun
sel and appeals. |
He loved his friends, his church
and Sunday school. God was
recongnized in his business, and
shared his income. Standing for
the uplift of his community, in
morals, education and material
progress, he was a good citizen.
His heart and ear were neither
cold nor deaf to the cry of suffer
ing and want.
Five years of associated busi
ness relationship with others
constituted a period of uninter
};mted confidence and harmony.
This is high and deserved praise
in this period ¢f commercial
shortage, speculation and graft.
Tender and undying was his
love for wife and baby. In this
modern, exacting strenuous life
their’s were higher claims than
business. -
‘Beautiful, too, was his devo
tion to his mother. No wonder
phe leaned so trustingly on the
strong arm of his younz man
hood for support and guidance,
and no wonder this scrrew falls
with such crushing force on her
lonely desoiate heart. May He
“who hath borne our griefs and
carreid our sorrows‘’ put around
these stricken ones His ever
lasting arms and fill their hearts
with the consolations of hisg love
and the hope of re-umon in Hea
ven bye-and-bye. ). 8.

M. ], ). Webb, our_ populie
and efficient city marshal, has
only held the position since Sep
tember lagt, but during this time
has proven that he s the right
‘man in the right place.
~ Because a man is not afraid of
another, and bears the reputa
tion of possessing a great depl
of grit, is no sign that he will
make a good officey. It takes a
coel-headed man in the time.of
‘danger,and a man possessed with
some detective ability, to make’
a good ofticer of this kind, and
we think Mr. Webb is endowed
with these requisites.
Before moving here he was a
police officer in Waycross for
quite awhile,. and was compli
mented very highly by his supe
rior officers.
He is a candidate for re-elec
tion to the office of city marshal
of Hazlehurst. We have heard
of no one who are going to run
against him. We have seen him
working on our streets, along
with the street hands. IHe
wasn’t oblige to do this, but he
did. He had the interesj of our
town at heart, and has " worked
for the betterment of it ever
since he landed in the place.
On the 19th day of Feb. 1004,
Mr. Webb enlisted with the sth
regiment of the U.S. Cavelry,
and for three years did secrvice
out on the fronteer. Soon after
wards he was made a sharp
shooter, and within two months
after he enlisted he was promo
ted to Corporal, then to Sar
geant. There were many men
in his company whom had served
for years in the army as privates,
yet, spon after he' joined it, he
was m‘}a.de Savgeant. Why, be
cause his superior officers saw it
in him to make a first-class sol
dier. He has in his possession
just as honorable discharge as a
soldier ever received. We have
seen and read the documents,
and know whereof we speak.
He was born and reared .in
our neighboring town, Grabam,
and his friends throughout this
entire section are legion.
Hon. J. A. Cromartie and
Ordinary Cock, of Jeff Davis
county, from Hazlehurst, spent
a portion of Wednesday in Tifton.
They are making a tour of this
section, leoking at the jails,
preparatory to building one for
Jeff Davis county. They have the
court house built, and are pre
paring to build a jail. They
spoke in the highestterms of
the Tift county jail, saying it was
one of the cleanest and best kept
they had visited.—Tifton Gazette
