SAVING TOMATOS FOR SEED.
"~ Select the earliest fruit. |
Select large fruit. l
Select fruit of good shape and

vines.
Do not pick the fruit until very }
ripe, not until five or six days after
all signs of green have gone.
If the seed is thus selected, proper
ly saved and kept dry, its vitality |
should last for several years. To!
save the seed properly it should be
washed free from all pulp and thor- 1

spoiled.—Farmers’ Home Journal.
PARIS GREEN SUBSTITUTE. |
Try arsenate of lead as a sabsti- }
tute for Paris green. You can make |
the arsenate of lead by putting eleven |
ounces of acetate of lead in a hogs- !
head containing 150 gallons of water,
with four ounces of arsenate of soda. l
These unite readily and remain in
suspension in water better than Paris |
green. The arsenate of lead is pre
cipitated in the solution. But it 4
easily bought already prepared. One
fourth of a pound to fifty gallons of
water will kill potato beetles, but it
is better to use half a pound for this
purpose. It will kill a few curculios
of peaches and plums, but the jarring
methed is far better, for these suck
ing insects seldom get the poison.—

Sweet atygsum, the low-growing,
hardy, whie-flowered and very frag

is of the easiest culture, and thrives
‘best in a ~arden loam of moderate
fertility. A double flowering variety

most florists.

LOCUST PLAGUE IN SYRIA.
Methods of Government Commission
to Prevent Recurrence This Year.
Consul Jesse B. Jackson, writing
from Aleppo, describes the Turkish
plans for preventing a recurrence this
year of the scourge of locusts in
nothern Syria:
During the months of June ‘and
July, 1908, this province was visited
by great swarms of lccusts, permeat
ing every locality to such an exien:
that the crops then standing, as well
as the vegetables in their early state.
were entirely destroyed. As this is
purely aa agricultural country, the
hardship caused thereby to the pea
santry amounted to almost a calam
ity. In partially drrigated districts
the second crop was planted, the
product of which was sold" to local
inhabitants at exorbitant prices.
It appears that the kocust lays an
enormous quantity of ezgs soon after
a long flight, depositing them in a
protecting sack in a hole it makes in
the ground. These eggs hatch out
in the following spring, and unless
the climate is exceedingly cold during
the winter season the increase
therefrom is enormous.
Accordingly, consjderable activity
has recently been manifest in official
circles in this vicinity toward pre
venting a recurrence of the deplorable
devastation of last vear, With this
idea in view a commission was lately
appointed by the government, and
designated as the “locust conumis
sion,” empowered to exercise such
means as appeared most effective to
ward exterminating the insects. The
commission therefore requires, that
every rural inhabitant collect and de
liver to the government at least 20
okes (oke equals 2% pounds), equal
to about 55 pounds of locust egss,
under penalty of a fine. This has re
sulted in the gathering of various
quantities from the different locali
ties, as follows: Killis 35,335 okes:
imperial domains, 99,385 okes; Alep
po, 19,285 okes; Rakka, 1,970 okes;
Biredjik, 8,680 okes; Ourfa, 2,542
okes; Bab, 61,851 okes; total, 299,048
okes, equal to 629,882 pounds.
In addition, the surface of certain
territories was plowed over as fol
lows, viz.; Munboutch, 5,525 deonums
(doonum equals one-fourth acre):
Maara, 5,275 doonums; Idlib, 4,080
doonums; Aleppo, 274 doonums; im
perial domaing, 1,000 doonums, total,
16,154 doonums, equivalent to 4,038%
acres,
It is assumed by those im authority
that these meacures, while not likely
to entirely prevent the reappearancc
of the locusts during the coming
spring and summer monthg, will tend
greatly to reduce them in numbers,
at least sufficiently so to enable R
more successful combat and destruc
tion of them through the use of chem
icals and by other processes.—Daily
