Later from California. —Arrival of the Brother
Jonathan.
New York. Aug. 20, 9 A. M.
The Brother Jonathan arrived at an early hour
this morning, bringing 400 passengers, and Cha
gres dates to the 9th, and Kingston to the 12th
instant.
The Falcon was at Chagres waiting for the
mails. The Ohio arrived on the 4th, in a disabled
(condition.
The Northerner arrived at Panama on the sth,
with the California mails to July the 15th—she
brought $2,000,000 in gold dust.
The steamer Union with 300 passengers and
$300,000 in gold, was wrecked in St. Quinan's
Bay on July sth, but all on board were saved,
fe The cholera was fast disappearing from Ja
maica.
The steamer Commodore Stockton left Pana
ma in July lor San Francisco, but returned on the
2d of August in a leaky condition. While lying
at Tobago awaiting repairs, the steerage pas
sengers mutinied and took possession of the ves
sel, demanding back their passage money. The
Captain appealed to the American Consul for
protection.
The Brother Jonathan brought no specie or
freight. She brings Kingston papers to the 11th
inst. The news possesses very little general
interest. •
The British barque Cyclops was lost on Roman
Beach, near Roman River, on the 26th of June,
during her passage from Jamaica to Truxillo.
Two lives were lost.
On the Ist of August, the anniversary of
British West India Emancipation was duly
celebrated.
The cholera had prevailed tea considerable
extent on the North side of the Island, but was
rapidly disappearing.
At Savannah la mar. the number of deaths to
July 26th, was 336, and the total number of
deaths in Spanish Town was 600. The small
pox had broken out at Paris, Trelanny.
From Barbadoes there was no news of interest.
The Assembly had passed a law establishing in

The Pameero appeared off Havana on the llth,
and was signalled from Moro Castle. She took
two pilots from a schooner, and proceeded west
landing at Morrello, twelve miles from Bahia
Honda, and taking possession of the town of Las
Pozas. The Pizarro and two merchant steamers
with eight hundred troops and sixty horses, left
Havana on the morning of the 12th, and attack
ed Lopez on the 13th at San Miguel, near Las
Pozas. The Pizarro had got ashore at Bahia Hon
da, and Lopez expected to take her. Lopez had
advanced to San Diego de Nines to cut off the
retreat of the Spaniards. The peop e were rising
in many places. About five hundred individuals
had left Havana to join Lopez, fifty of whom had
been taken prisoners. Only seven hundred troops
were left in Havana.
The Crops. —We have had an opportunity
this week of seeing our friends from various parts
of the County. We learn from them that not
withstanding the late protracted and excessive
drought, by which the crops had been materially
injured, there will be nearly an average yield ot
corn, while the pea crop will be unusally heavy.
In districts to the South and East, there has not
been, it is said, such a promising propect for corn
in twenty years. It is somewhat remarkable,
that while in some portions of Duplin the crops
have been almost ruined by the drought, at the
distance of fifteen miles eastward, the rains have
been very abundant and the streams overflow
ing.
The Mills in this region have been at a stand
for the last two or three weeks, and it has been
impossible to procure meal, &c. Within the last
three days it has rained freely, and we think the
rivers and streams will soon be, if they are not
now, filled and runing over.— Goldsboro, N. C.

Opr Rail Road.— ln a few days we hope to
have the pleasure of announcing the arrival, at
this place, of the cars of the Atlanta and La-
Grange Rail Road. They run now, daily, with
in a mile, or less, of Newnan, and we have fre
quently heard, during the past few days, the
panting thunder and shrill neighings of the “ iron
horse,” as he comes with the lightning’s speed—
“ Champing his steam, and bounding o'er the
plain."

McDonald vs. Cobb.
A Cobb man was boasting on the cars, on Sat
urday last, that two thirds of the voters present
were for Cobb. A bet was made and the vote
taken, and to utter astonishment, no doubt,
unless he was one of the hired braggers, the re
sult was, 29 for Cobb and 51 for McDonald.
The crowd was made up to a considerable extent,
of farmers and others returning to their homes
from the Atlanta Fair. We attach no more im
portance to this incident than it deserves, and
give it only as one of the indications of public
sentiment in this section of the State.— Marietta

Mr. Marshall:—
Sir: —Permit a lady to express her unbounded
thanks, for the prieoless benefit you hare con

myself, in your Compound, called “ Magical Pain

benefit I have derived from the use of your Rheu

which have resulted beyond my most sanguino wish

opinion, and cxperioncc, tho best and most valua

THE FIRE IN CONWAY, MASS.
TITE insert with pleasure, tho following letter
VV from the Conway Tool Company. It shows
clearly that the faith of the publie in Rich’s Sala
mander Safes has not been misplaced;—
Conway, Mass. July 14, 1851.
Messrs. Ross, Stoams A Co., successors to C. Rich
A Co., 146 Water street, Now York:—Gentlemen—
To your inquiries respecting the fate of the Sala
mander Safe, No. 3,381, purchased of you through
Messrs. Wm. Bryce A Co., it is perhaps sufficient to
say, that I am at present writing on paper which
was in tho Safe at the time of the destruction of our
manufactory by flro, on tho morning of tho 27th
inst. The Safe was on tho lower floor of a three
story building, containing considerable quantities of
seasoned beach timber, and it was at a red heat
when it fell into a bod of lire hard wood coals, in
which it remained imbedded about three hours,
when it was drawn out, and, as soon os practicable,
opened. Tho leather bindings of the books were
heated by the steam, and some of tho looso papers
wore somewhat stained; but not a single parlilo of
paper in any book was injured, and not a single
mark on any loose paper, whether rnado by a pen
or peneil, is defaced. Wo consider tho Safe in
question as having passed through ono of tho se
verest tost to which it could have bcon put, and we
need not assure you teat we rejoice at its success.
Wo will forward you tho burnt Sale, and in the
meantime, send us another of tho samo size and
pattern, for immediate use.
Yours, respectfully.
