The New York Times, in noticing the mani

We had supposed that the ntniost extent to
which it was necessary for a Bureau officer to
go, was to protect the negro from actual wrong,
and not to threaten those presumed to be his
persecutors, in this indiscriminate and general
way. What punishment, moreover is to fall
unon a Virginia family which has barelv means
of subsistence for its own members ? Ar§
these members bound to bend before this sump

not f The ill-advised friends of the negro may
depend upon it that such philanthropic measures
will produce a reaction, sooner or later, here in

A Disgusting Exhibition at Chimborazo
[t will lie remembered that we published a

they were original five in number. One lias
died, two have been sold to a Yankee, for ex

wretched woman has rvfused an offer of five
hundred dollars for the two which remain. The
woman will be sent to the poor-house, and
when she is sufficiently recovered she will be
sent ta tbe penitentiary. Hanging would be
far too slight a punishment for such an aband

“ New-Bedford, Mass., Nov. 24,1863.
Dear Sir:—l have been afflicted many years with
severe prostrating cramps in my limb*, oold feet and
and a general disordered system. Physicians
and medicines failed to relieve me. While visiting
some friends in New York who were using Plantation
Bitters they prsvailed upon me to try them. I com
menced with a email wine-glassful after dinner. Feel
ing better by degrees in a few days I was astonished .to
find the coldness and crao ps had entirely left me, and
I could *leep the night through, which I have not done
for years. I feel like another being. My appetite and
streng.h have also greatly improved by the use of the
Plantation Bitters
