of tho Bureau of Refugees Freedman and Aban
doned Lands, for this city and vicinity, as ap
pears by S. O, No. 38, series 18G5, from this
office, herewith enclosed, and that orders have
been issued by tho military authorities to turn
over to him for trial and adjudication all cases
in which freed people are parlies interest* d

of this date, informing mo that Jacob R Davis,
Esq., has been appointed an agentof the Bure *u
of Refugees, Freed men and Abandoned Laud ',
for this city and vicinity, and requesting ti n*
instructions he issued the Chief of Police and
other civil officers of the city making nrvests of
freodmen or tho=o who commit offenses agah st
them, to turn such over to Mr. Davis h r
adjudication.
In compliance with your request, and well
the desire to promote harmony and prevent all
conflict of authority, I have issued directions
to the Chief of Police and other officers to turn
over the cases designated to Mr. Davis.

Removal —Our old friend, H. F. Russell
has removed his place of business from
over Platt’s furniture house, to the store for
merly occupied by Clayton & Kennedy, tinder
the Augusta Hotel, which has been through!y
repaired and refitted. Mr. Russell has one of
the largest and beat assorted stocks of dry good •
in this market, and will be pleased to see all
his old and now customers at his present plac
of business.' His standing in this community
and vicinity as a merchant is too well known to
say anything more than merely to call atten
tion to his romovai to his new store, where we
wish him nil the success which his energy, in
tegriiy and business capacity so richly deserve.
* The Southern Express Telegraph Line.—
This line, recently established between An
gusta and Atlanta, is now in thorough working
order. Mr. J. B. Crumpton, operator of tho
lino in this city, has, we understand, been re
moved to Union Point, to take charge of the
office at that place.
The South Carolina Railroad—The Co
lumbia branch of the South Corolina railroad
was completed on the 16th instant Trains are
now running daily between Charleston and Co
lumbia This is a gratifying announcement
and we sincerely trust that the time is not far
distant when the Augusta branch of this im
portant road will be completed.
