It almost seems a pity to alhjde ti : ny little

people who look upon tho cuttle plague as a pro

There are these also who feel very unoomfoi table

secre of wba' they require. It is social as well
ss political reform, aufl a radical change in their
condition. The friends of the Church are algo

horror of the masses, ves ments. incen-e, proces

I confess, sometimes bother me fur a moment,
when they call their e'ergy “Catholic priest?”
and denounce their Low Church opponents as
“puritans ” Mr. Goschen. the new cabinet min

sentirian;” that is, as the Quarterly explains it
“he believes in every thing in the Chmch except
its doctrines.” An he is the repre«eutative of
a very large party of respectable i: Uriels, who
hold that the Church is tneve’y a useful political
and social institution created by act of Palia

A political writer in the high old tory 'nter
e-t wbo believes in the right* of propeity, sees
evil auguries in the elet.icn ti Parliament ot so
arrant a radical as Jehu Stewart Mill—a man
who teaches thatthe righ' * proper'v Jji land is
a mere legal expediency, a light not of nature,
but created by legislation, and liable to modifica

whole counties shake in their shoes to s<e mch a
man in Parliament; and the only course to take
is to tuy him up as quickly a3 possible Give
him a place ; put him in a condition to become
himself a landed proprietor, and his radicalism
will be disarmed, lor the tories hold, as the re
sult of along experience, that “tbe difference
between a d'mestiuat-d radical and one in astute
of nature, is the difierence between the lap-dog
and the wolf”—a bit of natural histo'y whi-h I

The Blalwart peasantry, who made such hardy

England like well enough to play at soldiering In
the volunteers, but will never "submit to the de
gradation of enlisting in tne regular army, where
they may bo flo/god but may not riso above the
lowest grade ol officers. And tho lower clarses
will not rnlist because they prefer their habitual

But justice to Ireland is another thing, Bid
FenignUm, ab-urd as ;t is in certain respacta, is
turning the attention of all reflecting Englishmen
to the necessity of doing something in that very
unaccustomed direction.
The Confederate b ndholders hive heM an

of Admiral Wallis. They resolved that they
have “full confidence that both in justice and

hoped that when the present pressure was a little

Pearls and Rubies.—White teeth cropping
from out of ridges of ruby, a breath spicy as
the airs from Araby the Blest. Who can resist
such fascinations ? To realize them, to per
petuate them, to make the mouth a casket of
pearls and rubies, and every sigh a gush of
fragrance, all you have to do, fair ladies, is to
use that matchless vegetable preparation, Fra
grant Sozodout.
Etertbody Interrsted —The glory of wo

O-AJR/ID.
To the Merchants of the South.
THE undersigned. Wholesale Dealers, advise
you of tho fact that Charleston is aga n e
market for the purchase of goods, end in view of
the early opening of ihe Spring trade, we beg to
solicit the resumption of the patronage so lib
erally extended to this market in the vast.
We are aware that many old and respected
firms will be missed from our number, but many
familiar names will be found in new associations,
ready to supply the wants cf the Trade, as ot
tore, and other old and new firms will be added
to our number at an early day.
The ca-h and short credit system having be?n
universally adopted in all the Northern markets,
we are necessarily compelled to adopt a like sys
tem as the only safe one on which to conduct
business, and the heavy per centage once neces
sary to cover bad debts will now bo avoided.—
Small profits and quick returns will be the rule,
and under it 3 working we hope not only to re
tore to our ancient city its former prosperity,
but to extend her trade to the full extent of the
capabilities her excellent geographical position
and natural advantages afford. Our interest and
ambition combine to stimulate us iu attaining
this result.
The Sou h Carolina Railroad is now open to
Columbia, and its President h;.s i fficially inform
ed us that tho Angusta line will be completed to
Blackvide this month, and that on tbe first of
February he will receive through freight to Au
gusta. A line of stearaersto Savannah will afford
facilities far shipping in that direction. It is our
ourpese to have in store by the last of February
a complete and varied assortment of goods in
our respective lines, adapted to the spring Irado,
and every exertion shall be made to promote ycur
interests.
We extend to yon the hand of commercial fel
lowship, and solicit your co-operation and patron
lge in our efforts to make Charleston the centre
of Southern trade. Give us the encouragement
we ask, and you will enjoy ail the advantages of
a cheap home maiket.
