WEDNESDAY MORNING. MAR. 17,1808
| From the St. Louis Republican.
The Election in New Hampshire.
Onr Radical contemporary crowed a lit
tle too loud and too soon yesterday.—
Farther news from New Hampshire puts
an aspect oil the election there which fails
to justify the exultation of our neighbor.
The telegraph announces the total vote of
all but nineteen towns. The total vote for
Harriman (Radical) is reported at 38,594;
for Sinclair (Democrat) 35,555. The nine
teen towns to be heard from, last year gave
Harriman 273 votes, and Sinclair 1,323. —
Adding these to the numbers above respec
tively, we have Harriman 38,807 and Sin
clair 36,878. Tills shows a Radical majori
ty of 1,989. in 1867 the Radical majority
was 3,140, showing a Radical loss on last
Tuesday of 1,157, and this too in the face
of efforts of men and money to carry the
State of the most extraordinary kind. But,
notwithstanding all, they could not hold
their own, but were swept back by the tide
of the Democracy, losing more than one
third of their majority, and this too though
they brought into the Held 2,785m0re voters
than they had in 1807.
This latter fact tells the real story, and
gives a rather unpleasant answer to the
exulting inquiry of our Radical neighbor,
“ What will the Democrats say to a Repub
lican gain of three or four thousand in a
little State like New Hampshire since No
vember ?” Leaving out of account the fact
that there was no election there in Novem
ber, but in the March previous, we answer
that the Democratic gain is greater than
the Radical. In 1807 the Radical total vote
was 35,809. This year, so far as the figures
•by telegraph enable us to estimate, their
total vote is 38,807, a gain of 3.058. In 1807
the total Democratic vote was 32,003. Last
Tuesday it was 30,878, u Democratic gain
of 4,215, or an excess over the Radical gain
of 1,158. We return the question of the
Democrat, “ What will the Republicans say
to A Democratic gain of 4,215 in a little
State like New Hampshire, in Radical New
England, in one year y” It' this is wiiat it
.means by the Radical tide beginning to
“ rise again," and the “ tremendous flood ”
that is to come, the Democracy may he at
their ease, lbr next November t hey will not
leave a grease spot of the Radical majority.

There was a desperate fight last month be
tween the priests and students of Padua, Italy.
The churches wefti prepared for the perform
ance of aTe Deum in honor of those who fell
at Montana on the Pope’s side, when they were
invaded by the students, who interrupted the
ceremonies with shouting and roariug, aud
wound up by sinning the hymn of Garibaldi.
A promiscuous fight ensued, the priests fight
ing with candle-sticks and crosses, and Inflict
ing severe wounds on many of their assailants.
Some of the churches were stripped of cur

wrenched from itß hinges and borne through
