(SUNDAY MORNING. APRIL 5, 1808.
Holy Week.
I’ALM SUNDAY AND ROGATION DAYS.
The portion of the Lenten season which
is observed with more especial ceremonies
commences with to-day, Palm Sunday.
The strict observance of the coining week,
which Is styled Holy Week, is confined to
the Catholic and Episcopal Churches. In
theforiner the ceremonies are of the most
impressive character, and, when the ritual
can lie literally adhered to, are really mag
nidcenl. Today, instead of the Gospel of
the day, the Passion of our Saviour is read
at the mass, and the chanting ot the “ Glo
ria in Excelsis” is dispensed with. At the
private masses the palm is dressed, and be
fore the commencement of the parochial
mass the procession and distribution of the
palms take place. There are then no extra
ordinary ceremonies, except the observance
of a strict fast on Monthly, Tuesday and
Wednesday, (the Rogation clays) until
Wednesday evening, when the solemn ser
vice of the Tenebne is performed. At this
service, which takes place during the twi
light hours, the clergyman and ecclesias
tics attached to the church, ranged on
either side of the sanctuary, chant the
Psalms appropriate to the occasion. At
the left hand or Epistle side of the
altar stands a triangular candelabra, in
which are placed lighted tapers of yellow
wax, representing the prophets and apostles,
and one of pure white wax, representing
the Redeemer. At the end of each chant
one of the yellow lights is extinguished,
and at a certain portion of the service the
white one is removed, but kept lighted, be
hind the altar, and shortly after replaced
in the triangle. The extinguishing of tne
yellow lights indicates the death of the
persons represented, and the temporary
removal of the white one typifies the gloom
cast over the Christian world for a t ime by
the dcutii of Christ, and its replacement
Symbolizes His insurrection.
MAUNDY THURSDAY.
Oil Thursday of Holy Week, called
Maumlay Timrsday, hey in the services of
Holy Wee k proper. During the recital of
the “Gloria iu Kxeelsis’’ the organ is played
and the sanctuary bell is rung, tor the last
time till tae hymn on Holy Saturday. The
cross on the altar is veiled in white, but
the processional cross in purple. Immedi
ately after the mass the celebrant, vested
with cope ami veil, takes i he Sacred Species
used at the mass from the tabernacle. A
precession is then formed, at the head of
which one of the ecclesiastics carries the
processional cross; the members of the
sodalities and others attached to the con
gregat.ion join in the procession, eacli hold
ing a lighted taper and chanting in unison
the range Lingua , the thurifere swinging
their censers and incensing tlie Host car
ried by the officiating priest. The proces
sion moves slowly around the church and
the sacred species is finally deposited in a
sepulchre prepared lor it in some part of
the church removed from the high altar,
aud there it. remains until Good Friday, the
tapers around being kept burning, and a
watch kept during the entire night. In
many of the churches in this city the sepul
chres are patterns of beauty and magnifi
cence, as the ladies of each congregation
vie with one another in the display of
gorgeous appointments and tasteful ar
rangements. In the evening the Tenebra
is sung,-the same as the evening previous,
and the watch at the sepulchre kept up
until the ceremonies on.
. GOOD FRIDAY,
which consists of the uncovering and the
adoration at the cross and the procession
from the sepulchre. The ceremony of un
veiling the cross is performed by the parish
priest, who uncovers a small portion of the
cross at a time, and chants “ Eece lignum
crucis ,” the assistants answering “ Flecia
mus genua." Alter the cross lias been en
tirely uncovered, the faithful approach in
couples, and reverently kiss the head and
feet of the crucifix. When this portion of
the ceremony is ended a procession, similar
to that of the day previous, is formed at
the sepulchre, and proceeds to the high
altar, when the Sacred Host is placed in
the tabernacle and the priest performs the
concluding portion of the mass. In the
evening there is generally a sermon on the
Passion of our Saviour, and the hynin
“ Slabat mater" is chanted by the choir.
The ceremonies on
•i ' s UOI.V SATURDAY
are the longest of the week. On this day
the bishops bless the baptismal oils and
chrism used in the ceremonies of the Chinch
during the year; and the priests bless the
incense, tire and water, used in the services
of the church. The Paschal candle is,also
blessed and lighted; the grains of blessed
incense are placed in the candle iu the form
of a cross, and the candle placed at the
Gospel side of the altar. The ceremonies
attendant oil Holy Saturday being con
cluded, the priest begins the mass, and :tt
the 1 ’ Gloria in MxcefsuT the bolls are rung,
ami the organ is intoned for Ihe first time
since Holy Thursday. The water blessed
on Holy Saturday is called Easter water,
and is believed to possess extraordinary
heaihig powers With the close of Holy
Saturday ends the solemn season of Lent,
and
EASTER WEEK
is ushered in with every possible expression
of joy and gladness at the ressurrection of
Christ, our Lord.
