The Atlanta Constitution says It seems as

who was kUled the other day, was a poly

themselves to be his lawful wives, in order
to draw from the Treasury the money due
Claiborne.
The Savannah News, of the 31st ult.,
says: “ The steamer Dictator, which ar
rived yesterday, brought an alligator 12
feet long. His ’g terslfip will be shipped
by the steamship Oriental, this morning, to
a gentleman in Boston. The monster was
caught in Florida.”
The Columbus Enquirer says: “There

a hatchet. No particulars as to the origin
of the fuss.”
A prominent Georgian sends us the fol
following in reference to certain inaccura
cies of the work of W. H. Sparks, which
was reviewed in last Sunday’s Chronicle :
To the Editor of the Washington Chronicle :
The Chronicle of last Sunday morning
has extracts from a recent work by W. H.
Spards, entitled “ The Memories of Fifty
Years." In one of them the State of Geor
gia is reproached for neglecting the graves
of her distinguished dead. A part, at least,
ot this reproach is undeserved, “ William
Holt Crawford," says the writer, “lies
buried in the garden of his home, without
a stone to mark the spot.” «SThis is not
true. The celebrated William H. Craw
ford, William Harris, not Holt, lies buried,
not in his garden, but in an enclosed family
burial ground near the house in which he
lived, In Oglethorpe county, Ga., and the
spot is marked by a marble slab, with an
appropriate inscription recounting his pub
lic servioes. The spot is kept in good
order by the present proprietor, Mr. Shelton
Oliver.
The writer also names Mr. Berrien in a
list of eminent Georgians who are “ distin
guished in their graves only by the green
sod which covers them.” The grave of Mr.
Berrien, in the Magnolia Cemetery, near
Savannah, is covered by a handsome mar
ble monument, bearing an inscription
worthy of the man.
Mr. Sparks is as wroug in his facts as in
his politics. A Georgian.
The “ Niggrk Capet.”—A West Point
cadet writes this to the New York Stand
ard in regard to the deeply injurned Smith:
If the white plebes were as guilty in im
pertinence to the drill master and officer as
he is, they would be confined to their tents
for two weeks, with no liberty except at
meal times. His officers are actually afraid
to nse the same language to him that they
do to others for political reasons, and he is
treated far better than any boy at his entry
has ever been since West Point was found
ed. The few trials he has endured have
raised a terrible storm, and any one who
has conversed with a' cadet can nnderetand
what terrible trials the new students are
compelled to endure, compared with which
his are pleasures.

It has been the custom to treat these dis
