SUNDAY MORNING, AUG, 7, 1870
State Items.
The Albany Nem will be converted into
a daily in January.
The British s'lip Hampton, Cant, at Sa
vannah, on Wednesday evening, was
struck by lightning and considerably dam
aged.
The corn yield in Whitfield and adioin
ing counties bids fair to be the most boun
teous for years.
The Columbus Enquirer is informed that
patch near that city was recently
’Mtuck by lightning, killing cotton, grass
and everything on a space of ground as
large as a house. Can such things be?
Mr. Frank Cue, a well known and high
ly respected citizen of Savannah, and mem
ber of last year’s Board of Aldermen, died
quite suddenly on Wednesday, at his plan
tation, a few miles from that city.
A passenger car on the Selma, Rome and
Dalton Railroad was thrown from the
track, on Tuesday last, near Oxford, Ala.,
by a bull in a cattle gap. Mr. Martin Lacy,
of Carbondale, Ga., was killed, and several
others injured, but not seriously.
A meeting of delegates from Spalding,
Butts, Jasper and Morgan counties has
been held in Mouticello, to inaugurate the
project of a railroad from Griffin to Madi
son via Indian Springs and Jackson. Com
mittees were appointed to solicit subscrip
tions and ask the aid oj the State.
The City Council of Atlauta, at a called
meeting Tuesday night, unanimously re
solved to pay $130,000 towards the pur
chase of the Kimball Opera House, furni
ture, etc., as a State House, leaving $260,-
000 to be paid by the State.
On Sunday a difficulty occurred at
Cusseta between D. H. Burts, Esq., and
Mr. Chas. H. Howard. Burts was slightly
wounded in the forehead by a pistol shot,
and Howard, probably fatally, by a blow
on the head with a hatchet.
Unfortunate Casualty.— Mr. R. I. Q.
Blake informs us of one of those unfortu
nate casualties that will sometimes occur,
whereby an estimable man was cut down
in the prime of his life. Mr. J. Harris was
accidentally shot and killed by Mr. Marion
Lowry, his brother-in-law, on the, Ist inst,
while engaged in hunting on Band Moun
tain. Mr. Harris was dressed in a brown
suit, and as the party, consisting of several
gentlemen, had divided in the woods for the
purpose of driving the game, Mr. Lowry
caught a glimpse of Mr. Harris through the
brush, and mistaking him for a deer, he
drew down upon him and fired, the shot
taking effect in the bowels of the unfortu
nate man, producing a wound from which
he died after two hours suffering. Mr.
Harris leaves a wife and three children, and
bis death is greatly deplored by all who
knew him .—Rome Courier.
The Weather and the Crops. —After a
severe spell of dry weather, which con
tinued two weeks, we have for the last few
days been favored with the most refreshing
showers of rain, and the crops, both of corn
and cotton, are greatly improved. We were
pleased on sales day to learn that the
drought which we were suffering here had
not been general, and that although Barn
well was as dry as a powder house, in other
sections of the district good rains had
fallen. Our visiting planting friends all
seem in good spirits, and hopeful that fair
crops will be made.— Barnwell Sentinel.
Fbom Brooks County. —A letter from
a friend In Brooks county, dated the Ist
Inst., says : The weather is extremely warm
' ao d in many places we have had no rain for
three weeks. The cotton forms are shed
ding rapidly. 1 was in a neighbor’s field
this morniDg. and could have raked up the
forms from the ground by handfulls. I
think the corn materially damaged. Noth
ing new politically.— Macon Telegraph.
Dexter Beats Himself.— Dex ter was
driven on Saturday over the Fleetwood
coarse to a road wagon, by Hr. Bonner, in
the extraordinary time of 1.06% to the half
mile pole. The time was taken by Mr.
Shepherd Knapp, Jr., and another gentleman
present. Mr. Walton made the sime 1.07,
bnt some watches called it 1.06%.
