Assassination of Col. Tojn Dickens in
’*■ Tennessee.
The Memphis .dwitonc/iegives the follow
ing account, of the killing of Colonel Tom
Dickens, the tenth victim of the Bolton-
Dickens family feud. It says:
Colonel Thomas Dickens, well known to
the people oJf Shelbv county, was waylaid
by some fiend and his life destroyed in
daylight on a public road. The whole
city was shocked and astounded by the
news. The manner in which the terrible
crime was done added to the horror that
seized the public mind, and especially be
cause the victim was Cplonel Thomns Dick
ens. whose (eud with Wade H. Bolton,
and whose acquittal fdr the killing of Wade
H. Bolton, is still fresh In the memory of
our readers.
Colonel Dickens had passed Friday night
wit'i his neighbor, John C. Bolton, who
lives on Big Creek, about six miles north
east of Raleigh, in this county. Yester
day morning he mounted his horse and
started for home, a distance of lour miles,
and while riding leisurely along,, all alone,
about 7, a. m., and not suspecting any
evil or, harm, he was suddenly fired on
by an assassin concealed in the under
growth near the public road. The fiend dis
charged the contents of a double-barrelled
shot gun into the body of the old man, in
stantly killing him and mangling his body
dreadfully. The work wasdeliberatelydone;
both barrels were fired—one after another
with an interval of a few seconds. At the
first fire the old man was shot off his horse,
and after he fell to the ground the second
fire was heard. The gun was loaded with
buckshot, and as the assassin was within
ten paces of Colonel Dickens, the effect of
the balls was terrible, mangling and tear
ing the body to pieces. The horse turned
back and was caught at Bolton’s store by
the young man in charge of it. The shoot
ing had been heard plainly in the direction
from which the horse came, and the blotches
of blood on the saddle and rump of the
horse at once spoke of murder. But the
terrible catalogue of crimes linked with the
Bolton and Dickens families instantly ap
peared to the minds of the people at Bol
ton’s store, and it was with difficulty that
any one or more could i>e found brave
enough to go to the scene of murder. WJio
did the deed is the question asked by every
one, and answered by no one. The deadly
feud between Wade H. Bolton and Thomas
Dickens is involuutarily alluded to as fur
nishing an explanation. But how is it
possible that this can be so, when Wade
Bolton is dead? Who represents Wade
Bolton ?
******* *
Though Wade H. Bolton sleeps in the
grave, this bloody work of killing still goes
ou. Dickens now has fallen on the high
way, mangled and butchered. Will the
thirst of blood demand other victims?
Colonel Dickens leaves surviving him only
one child, Dr. Sam Dickens; Isaac L. Bol
ton several daughters aud one son, M. Seth
Bolton; Wade Bolton no offspring, and
Washington Bolton several daughters and
one son.
The Perils oe Scalawaogerie.— ln
Mississippi there is a social unpleasant
ness growing out of political equality.—
Mistress Alcorn is a white woman whose
husband was elected Governor of Missis
sippi as a scalawag, and Mistress Lynch is
a black lady, whose husband is the Radical j
Secretary of State in Mississippi. There
has never been a doubt in the minds of
those who know the Governor and the
Secretary of State, that they are equal in
all social aud political points. The negro
has never yet considered himself any better
than the Governor, and the Governor is
constantly protesting that the negro is just
as good as he is. This feeling, however,
does not extend to the female portions of
the respective families. For Madame Al
corn has, with astounding indignation, re
fused to receive the calls of the brunette
beauty, Madame Lynch, and all the negroes
in the country around are beginning to in
quire about “dis yere’quality busumhess
is, anyhow.” The scalawag Governor ik
in severe tribulation about it, but as he
has no influence with his family, there ap
pears to be no remedy for it, and he must
endure the contempt of t!.e whole negro
population of his State.
