Apologetic. —Our readers will ex
cuse us for not giving the usual amount
of road hug matter in this issue, ancl our
advertising pa'rons the non-appearance
ot their favors, as an 4 event” rendered
it impossible for us to do justice to
cither.
Ti!e Editor of this paper is absent on
a business tour to ( lie cities of Charles

be “off regular duty” for some time.
Cotton. —This great staple is now
■steadily advancing, worth to-day from
28 to 22c. In Liverpool it has ad
vanced one penny which is about two
cents. Our advice to planters is not to
be ‘too eager to dispose of their cotton.
They can easily get more by waiting
u while. Wc charge nothing for this
advice.
JKgf” The circus seems to have been
■pretty liberally patronized by both col
ors. Alt live churches, ive believe, were
very well represented. On such occa

Another Richmond in tiie Fired. —
Tthe name of our fellow-townsman, Hon.
J. J. Scarbrough, is announced in to
day’s issue as a candidate for thejudg
ship of the S. W. Circuit. Thus far
the -race is between onr old fried Peter
Stuozier, -and the Judge; and we do not
hesitate to say that the latter is a
formidable competitor, having once
filled the position he now seeks in "days
gone by,” and is generally know as an
honest, discreet jurist to the people of
this circuit.
Wo Will not buckle on our armor
for cither of the “Richmonds,” but
cheerfully Submit the question as to
who shall he the successful one to the
intelligent voters of the circuit, and
abide willingly by their decision.

We have good authority for saying
that some gentlemen of this vicinity,

We lay claim to have no extraordin

our self up as a. lecturer upon good
morals and the relative duties of Chris

will say and that is, that we find many
persons who are so very religions that
they are like tiie “Indian’s Tree,” they
lean over ! They strain at a gnat and
swallow the biggist sort of a Camel.
For instance PreaeJtcrs arc terribly
ferocious in the pulpit against the

go. T’ai is religion with a vengeance

Gov. Harris, Gen. Price, Gen,
Shelby, and all those American sottlers
who were living on lands given to them
by Maximilian, says the New Orleans
Commercial, have been compelled to
abandon their farms by the Liberals,
and take shelter in Cordova, where there
is a French garrison. Our informant
states that die Liberals have threatened
to hang any of the settlers who may
make a second attempt to cultivate
their places.
General Shelby is running a wagon

of Mexico. The undertaking affords
him, it is said, a good living. General
