O WEET OPOPONAX FROM MEXICO’.—
0 Thcmost elegant and essential personal re
quisite for a lady, oExtuapt of Sweet Opopo
nax.” Manufactured by E. T. Smith & Cos.,
New York, and sold at the Drug store of
Oct 9 ts Dr. E. .T. KLDRIDGE.
No Mait.. —No mail yesterday' afier
noon. Our worthy P Mi, who is pre
sumed to know everything, and wlto is
always very accommodating, could not
givens all the particulars of this provo
king failure. It may he summed up in
a word, however—there was no lioute
Agent aboard. This is not, by'any
means, the first occurrence of 1 his kind
-117(0 and where is the dignified official
alluded to ?
We regret our inability to give the
latest news in this issue. The reader,
however, will attach no blame to us.
Obituary. —Space prevents us from
inserting an obituary notice intended
for this issue. It will appear soon.
Declined. —-The poetical effusion of
our friend, , is declined for the pres"
cut, at least.
The report also ofthe School Exam
ination is declined, as we have read in
print, many times, the same, or very
nearly it. Give us something original,
and perhaps we’ll give you a hearing.
Pleasant Mi t sic. —llow charming
do the notes of pleasant music fall upon
the ear about the hour of midnight,
when aroused from quiet slumber and
all nature is hushed into silence. Such
music greeted many ears a night or two
since in our city. The young gentle
men engaged in that serenade have, we
know, the warmest thanks of all the fair
ones, who had tho pleasure of hearing
their performance; and if they only
knew how much their efforts, in this
direction, are appreciated,by the young
ladies, we are sure they would not hesi
tate to repeat, very often, their delight
ful preformanee.
Stolen. —Some rascal belonging to
Haight & Chambers’ Circus, not having
the fear of God or man before his eyes,
did on the night of the IC-th of the pros,
out month, in the year of our Lord
Eighteen hundred and sixty-six, throng])
the instigation of the devil and his own
perverse heart, and by a wonderful pro
pensity to pry into other folks’ busi
ness, steal, from the hotel in the well
known city of Americus, and situated
on the public square and in full view Os
the Court House, a reasonable sized
trunk, with a spring lock' belonging to
what is styled, in modern parlance, a
freedman, but, in this' instance, n fr.cdr
iconian! We have told the circum
stance in as few words as p< - .hie !
Musical. —It will ho see’ll from an
advertisement in another column that
Mr. G. M. Hay has just received a num
ber of splendid Pianos from the celebra
ted manufacturers of those instruments,
Wm. Knabe & Cos., Baltimore.
It were useless for us to say a word
in commendation of the Piano made by
tiie above named firm, for it is as an es
tablished fact that for many years past
the sale of them has far surpassed those
of any other make, throughout the en
tire South, which is certainly sufficient
evidence of their superiority. They are
made somewhat different from those of
New York and Boston manufacture, the
difference being readily perceived on in
spection. They are pronounced by
critics to be far superior in richness of
tone and fulness of volume, to any ever
offered to tho public; while in finish
and exterior appearance the workman
ship is perfect.
Persons desirous of inspecting these
Pianos will find them in tho Millinery
room of Mrs. Mapi*, at the Emporium of:
Mr. G. M. Hay.
SSf Parties desirous of making an of
fice holder of any friend competent to
“fill the position,” can always have his
friend’s qualifications paraded before an
appreciative constituency, through the
columns or our paper, by paying for any
recommendation they may see proper to
publish, at our usual advertising rates
—§2,00 per square. We can’t fill space
valuable to us, with suggestions from
Torn, Dick and Harry, eulogizing the
competency of this one, and that one, to
till public positions without pay- Nd,
gentlemen, you who have filled our
was|e box with tldrty-sevon badly writ
ten doimnumcations, puffing your favor
ite’s claims, if he. has any-, for tho vacan
cy in the judgeship of this judicial cir
cuit, will pleaso pardon ns for not pub
lishing them gratuitously. We like to
be. accommodating; wo love to assist
the “rising stars” of our country, in onr
feeble way, but we,.can’t take meat and
•bread out of our month to do it. We wish
them all success in life, but, unless they
arc willing to pay the printer, their as
cension ofthe laddyr of fame must nec
essarily be slow. Put this fact, gentle
men, in your pipes and smoke it.
SWEET OFUROXA .!'! Is (lie sweetest Ex

if once; will use no other. Sold at the Drug
store of [oct.»tfj Dr. EJ. EI.DRIDGE.
Clothing.-—One of the finest lots of
clothing- in our market is to be found at
Mr. G. M. Hay’s, and he assures us that
he will sell at lower figures than any
house in the city. We have inspected
his stock, priced his articles, and found
him exceedingly low in his charges.—
He has every style and variety of cloth
ing and at every price. It is the very
place to get a good suit, of clothes, at
your own figures. Inspect his stock,
he charges nothing for exhibiting, and
our word for it, you will buy yourself
a bran new suit, and bless the Republi
can that it directed you to such a cheap
house.

Top H ail. —One of our gentlemanly
freedman, the other day, in a spirited
discussion with another gentleman of
color, on the rights and priviliyes of
lii.s race, made the significant remark
that matters had changed somewhat
and that the rail which had been, for
so long a time, at the bottom , was now
on the tip. True, O, King!
!JsgPDuring the war, and while the
Federate occupied Memphis, and were
overrun nig Tennessee, some of Gen.
Forrest’s meta found a little girl in the
woods, who was too young to tell her
name, or the residence of her parents.
They tenderly, cared for her and nursed
her with a mother’s devotion until a
suitable opportunity was presented,
when they carried her to Memphis, and
confided her to the kind inmates of
Aligns Convent, The little creature
was found in the forrest by Forrest’s
men, in the month of May, and the
lady superior has named her May For

Goon Joke on the Police.—A cit
izen of South Bend stepped into the
Mayor’s office and stated that the night
previous a fellow came stalking into his
house stark naked, and that he was una
ble to pnt him out and that he w'as there
yet. Three policemen at once started
on the run to oust the intruder. When
they got into the house they asked to
see the fellow that had come in the night
before. The nurse brought out the ba
bv,which the citizen’s wife had present
ed him with the night .before. Thu po
licemen suddenly disappeared and it is
supposed have had to stand a good
many extra treats since. —Louisville
Courier.
Sad and Fearful.—Ex-Governor
Vance, of North Oarolinia, in recent ad
dress before the literary society of the
North Carolina University, spoke as
follows:
No moments of our v ictory arc for us,
no national jubilee can we celebrate, no
songs of triumph can our maidens sing,
or garlands of glory weave; there is no
welcoming of returning conquerors nor
erecting of triumphal arches for us, to
console us for our great defeat and that
heavy sorow which, never flitting, still
is sitting in our household; and all that
we have left for our comfort is the sad
yet tender light which plays around
the memory of those who died to make
it otherwise.
An Amateur Planter Teaches Us
llow to Plant. —He was conversing
with one of the most expert agrieultu
trists in the State, and remarked: I
do not wonder that the Southern people
are not prosperous. They have no
energy, and do not take the trouble
to understand the nature ofthe product
iveness of then' soil. This sir is a hay
country and not a cotton country.—
They can raise hay much more easily,
and in greater abundance, than they can
cotton. I have found this out on my
own place and though 1 did not intend
it, I have now a splendid hay crop in
the fields which I planted in cotton.”
This was not said, my informant tells
me as a joke or in fun, but in dead
earnest, as the announcement of an
agricultural discovery,
