THE PUBLIC GIN.
II CAME VERY NEAR BURNING ON
SATURDAY LAST
. The public gin, in our town, belong
ing to Gk W. Partridge <fc Co. came
very near being burned on Saturday
.last.
The fire was discovered in the moat,
or waste under the gin. It is suppos
• ed that it was caused by a match being
in the.,seed * cotton, which struck
was
* ,Wy the saws and Jell under the gin.
Messrs. Lang and Bussey were near
the gin when they discovered the fire.
v Mr. Bussey' seising the gin breast
. threw h up, therehy stopping the flow
of cotton into the gin, and Mr, Lang
ran.-down and “shut off” the engine,
while a negro Secured some water and
extinguished the fire before it reached
"mass of liht cotton . Tite gin had a
. condenser, and that is what saved the
as the 1 'fire would have oer
tainly’reached the lint cotton before
water could have been brought, had it
* not been for it.
.The.re was seven bales in the gin
house, one in the press #nd forty in
the yard near tbe gin house and if it
had burned it would have been a ter
rible loss to the company, as there was
no insurance on the property. We
.
predict that the property will be in
sured before the uext giutiing eeason,
