A PRETTY LOVE STORY.
As old as ancient traditions, and as
inexorable as the laws of fne JVfedes
and the Persians, is the trutn of that
old maxim, “Love laughs at lock
smiths.”
Tti.s human nature law is no re
specter of persons, and holds sway
o'er the hearts oi prince and peasant
alike, and in the end generally adds
a triumph to Cupid's galaxy of victo
ries.
The most notable case of tins story
of .ae heart is now weaving a very
pretty; romance over all Europe in
general, and the Gorman empire in
particular, and in a way effects not
only the happiness of the crown
prince of the German empire and
Miss Gladys Deacon, a well known
and very beautiful American girl, but
involves the future emperorship of
Germany, and may cause serious dip
lomatic earl liquakes.
II seems that on a recent visit ef
the crown prince to London to spend
some, time with his great uncle, King
Edward, lie chanced to meet .Miss Dea
con. who was a guest ef tie (inches:
of Marlborough. II was a ease of love
at first, sight,; “eyes leol-.ou love 111
eyes that spake again” Tito de
bonair prince was a willing captive
to the graces of the dainty American;
they led tiie cotillions together in lie
very select el roles of the English no
bility, and at the end of a few weeks.
In the spirit, of a true wooer, he pre
sented his sweetheart wilh a magnltl
cent ring—the gift of his fatoer. the
kaiser, proposed marriage, and forth
with received hurry-up orders to re
port to liis paternal ancestor at Ber
lin, Then followed a stormy inter
view between irate father and love
sick son, in which the young man was
given peremptory orders to forget his
dream of love wim, the the statement
that no Hohenzollcrn prince should
ever marry a girl of common Ameri
can clay, it matters not how beautiful
ly It chanced to he mo.ued.
The prince threatened m do as did
the Austrian archduke, who took the
name of John Orta, anu. renounced his
rig.i.s to the throne for the sake of
the woman he loved. The prince said
lie would rather have the heart and
hand of tne American county than
rank or purple, or even the throne of
the German empire.
Just how ibis very romantic auair
of the heart will terminate, we of
course, know not, but at any rate,
here’s to tne crown prince; may he
have the manhood to stand by the
woman he loves, crown or no crown
and if he does, and weds the woman
of his choice, it's dollars to doughnuts
he will have the kaiser's forgiveness,
and at me same time have a princess
well worthy of the title.

Chairman Griggs, of the democratic
congressional committee is muea
gratified over the action taken by the
retail butchers in their convention just
closed. He believes the butchers have
set on foot a movement which
will make more democratic votes

outside of the direct work of the
committee and Die democratic cam

„ CUBA, TOO. '
The new republic of Cuba will bor
row |:i.'..otio 000, and the uses to which
it will be pul will show that Cuba has
some people who have acquired the
pension t abit. Of the $35,000,000 it is
said that $4,000,000 is to be loaned to
the distressed sugar planters, who are
so heavily in debt that the banks will
make no further advances to them
About $3,000,000 will go to pay old
debts contracted by the Cuban Junta
a*ul the remainder of the money will
go to the men who served in the rev
olutionary armies. They got no pay
while they were lighting the Spaniards
and it lias been tacitly understood
ever since Spain gave up,the island
that they were to get something when
an independent Cuban government
had been established. By the time
this loan is used up Cuba will be
ready for annexation to the United
Slates, wuere we make a specialty of
granting pensions.
