Poor old Carnden she is alwsigt lie

The check hooka of the guberna
torial candidates can now take a long
rest.
It is stated that some of the coun
ties in Alabama also went for Hoke
Smith.
The Atlanta Journal made a grand
fight for Hon. Hoke Smith. We doit
our hat to this great southern news
paper.
It will lake ten solid trains to haul
to the junk shop the broken vings
in Georgia caused by Wednesilay'a
(primary.
Tennessee and Florida have not
reported on Hoke Smith's vote yet
but we guess he made a clean sweep
there too.

The News would not ho human
If It did not appreciate the splendid
vindication of its position which the
people of Gl>wiu county handed out
iu the primary here Wednesday. We
are always in Hue for Brunswick
and when we are wrong we simply
don't knot* it
THE RESULTS OF THE
PRIMARY.
The people of tteorgla are prob
ably drawing a sigh of relief this
morning and they have a perfect
light to do so. The bitterest cam
paign In the history ot tjie stale
has terminated iu a great triumph
for the people—the commou people,
the hone aud siuew of the state.
The fight Just closed has been a re
markable ane for Invective aud per
sonalities. It has been broad in Us
scope of bitterness and boundless lu
the character of acrimony injected
into it. However, Ihe sober uiiuded
element of the people of Georgia iHi
lled to the call to arms against ring
domination and coapArate control and
won a victory that fairly puts the
people in the saddle and sounds the
death knell to the small peanut
politicians for iwenty-tive years dom
inant in the affairs of the atate of
tipw?in. It bauds i*ck to Um pen
pie high commission to govern them-]
selves and, above! ,&11, shows that j
the average citizen of Georgia is
learning to think fox lilmiself and
vote for himself.
The campaign of abuse, vitupera
tion and mud-slinging eminating on
ly in certain quarters proven to
be a boomerang and lias rebounded
to the discredit of those whence it
came.
The people have repudiated the ef
fort to tear down the character of
various and sundry parlies In tin
state and have showed liiui; willing
ness to resjiond to the rail of good
citizenship when needed.
The election of Hoke Smith wM j
mean that the affairs of the suit* of
Georgia for (lie next, four years an
to he governed by a great, hig. brainy j
honest man, who, seeing hi- dm
will dare to do It He will not In
•he tool of any men or sol of men
and will take up the thread of -in'
eminent without the fear of punish-j
ment or Iho hope of reward He]
will be the governor of all tin- pro-'
Pie and will not have to consult the]
ralroads and other corporate inter
ests before he acts or falls lo act
on any proposlton effecting the pro
|de of the commonwealth Tin
grand old party of Jefferson has not
suffered by handing to Ibis r- 1 .it
Georgian the robes of office and ell
the talk of wrecking the party eatne
front the "brothers" who w-ere light
lug for the preservation of ring
rule in Georgia As we have said
before, the democracy i. h iger than
all the candidates- in Christendom
multiplied an hundred Feld and will
•he Ihe gnilding star of Georgians
when the men of the present will
have been mi inhered with the thing'-,
of the .past.
Wo congratulate the people of
Georgia tills morning on their victory
for it was really a inagnllleienl one
and we believe that it means much
for the Empire State of the Smith
Then again, there is another moral
to be deducted from the results of
tho primary of Wednesday no per
sonality, however strong, is greater
than public sentiment. No man can
dll an ge Ihe mold of honest heart:
after the die Is east. Some severe
lessons were taught In this very re
markable contest and we are indm
glng the hope that they have gone
straight home, without being mini
mized by pride or undue self esteem.
In conclusion we deiire lo compli
ment the electorate of Glynn county
in having the manhood to repudiate
the candldncy of one of the gentlemen
who for a quarter of a century lin •
fought (his little city with all tin
power of a great newspaper combined
with a most liberal supply of wealth
When Brunswick slapped iu the lace
the candidacy of John 11. Kstill it
honored Its fair name and evinced a
civic pride that must < luilleiige the
admiration of all fair minded peo
ple.
