THE M USES’ HEAVEN
When earth’s last microbe has faint¬
ed,
When catgut lies twisted and dried,
When all carbolfuehsin has faded
And the youngest patient has died.
We shall sleep and faith we shall need
it
Lie down for an aeon or two,
Till the Master of all good nurses,
Shall put us to work anew.
! And only the Master shall praise us,
And only the Master shall blame,
; And no one shall work for money,
And no fine shall work for fame,
But each for the joy of the working,
And each in her separate star,
jShall see the Divine in her patient
And love them just as thy arc.
And we who were cross shall be hap¬
py,
Have plenty of sunshine and air,
And all the guaze that is needed,
With no one to watch or care, I
We shall have real saints to work |
on,—
Magdalen, Peter and Paul,—
W ho shall sleep through the night
without “hypos,”
And not have hysterics at all.
