Her friends demanded that she

By W. C. CLARK
(Central Press Correspondent)
PHILADELPHIA, Pa., June 19.
Your generous Uncle Sam is giving
this city a million-dollar shave and
haircut for the Democratic conven
tion.
That’s what it amounts to with 85
men renovating Independence hall,
250 more sprucing up city hall, 1600
repaving half a dozen main streets,
and a couple of thousand more fix
ing up convention hall and generally
lifting the face of this old Quaker
City.
The Democrats arrive here to open
their convention June 23. And to be
exact, Uncle Sam isn’t spending
quite a mi11i0n—5961,326. The city is
putting up $350,000-

DEAR ME!
COLLEGE FOR GIGOLOS IS
OPENED IN CLEVELAND
TO SUPPLY DEMAND
CLEVELAND, June 19 (TP)—Per
sonable young men with a taste for
the ango might find employment in
Cleveland today—if they don’t find
the term ••gigolo” repugnant. The
promoter, Mike Speciale, has inaugur
ated a college for gigolos to make up
a shortage of young men who may
be needed at the Great Lakes Exposi
tion French Casino this year. Promot
er Speciale thinks there may be more
bhan one shy lady who will need an
escort at the Casino.
Speciale, who knows a thing or
two about publicity, says the gigolos
must be high school graduates, non
smokers and non-drinkers. They must
not use oil on their hair and. above
all, their clothes must be conserva
tive.
der WPA projects and to give Uncle
Sam credit much of the work is of
lasting character.
But everything hasn’t been sweet
ness and light, during this renovation
business. There was the battle of City
Hall plaza, which involved Gen.
George B. McClellan and Gen. John
F. Reynolds, a couple of Civil war
heroes.
Filled with a lust for cleanliness,
the renovators started shining the
nice gren patina. These two statues
had bee ngathering dust for the last
50 years.
Guiseppe Donato, one of the city’s
leading sculptors, stopped that by
tearing his hair and threatening to
t call down the wrath of the gods. So
George and John are now being se
verely left alone. Except they have
TULSA FIRE DEPARTMENT
SAVES NEARBY VILLAGE
, CHELSEA, Okla., June 19 (TP) —
Fire apparatus from Tulsa rushed to
Chelsea today to save the village from
total destruction.
A mysterious fire broke out in .a
Chelsea drug store. In a few min
utes, it had spread to an adjoining
, building. Both buildings were des
troyed with an estimated $60,000 loss.
The village fire company appealed
to Tulsa when it saw the flames
would sweep the residential section if
they were not controlled immediately.
The Tulsa smoke-eaters rushed in and
saved the village.

Mayor Pushes It
The big push behind this desire for
a shiny city is S. (for Samuel) Davis
Wilson, the Yankee mayor. He was
largely instrumental in getting the
convention here in the first place.
Wilson is the first registered Dem
ocrat this town has had for a mayor
since baseball was invented. Except
that isn't quite fair to Wilson, for he
was elected on a Republican ticket.
It’s all very complicated. But poli
tics are that way in Philadelphia.
Wilson ws elected city controller as
a Democrat and then at the last elec
tion ran as a Republican, but he
couldn't change his registration with
outswearing he had voted for a ma
jority of Republican candidates at the
previous election. That’s the law, and
since Wilson doesn't swear, nothing
could be done about it.
Besides attempting to delight the
eye of the delegates, the inner man
also is being considrd.
Plnty of Drink
The state liquor control board has
stocked the state stores to overflow
ing, and If the delegates drink half
the stuff on hand 1 they’ll go home
and tell their wives they had a fine
time in ‘‘Boston or Pittsburgh.”
And if that doesn’t appeal, there
are two art museums, midget auto
mobile races, a thousand churches
and Atlantic City 60 miles away.
No, the Liberty Bell won’t be
patched up for the occasion. Just
dusted.

SCIENTISTS AGOG
AT SOLAR ECLIPSE
; PHENOMENA RECORDED
THROUGHOUT WORLD
BY USE OF MOVIES
LONDON, June 19 (TP).—Astron
omers from all parts of the world
clustered around telescopes in Tur
key. Asia Minor and Russia today to ,
view a complete eclipse of the sun.
Forty scientific expeditions, Man
ning field observatories set up along
a path which stretched from the sea
of Japan to the Mediterranean, ob
served t he heavenly phenomena with
the aid of the most modern astrono
mical apparatus in the world.
Motion picture cameras ground out
miles of film. Special cameras,
which changed position every second
of the eclipse, pointed their lenses
skyward as the shadow of the earth
darkened the fiery globe above. Bal
loons, which bore instruments de
signed to check climatic reactions to
the eclipse, soared high above the
earth, along the path of the pheno
mena.
Among the expeditions which
traveled thousands of miles to be on
hand for today’s eclipse was a group
representing Harvard University and
the Masachusetts Institute of Tech
nology. The Harvard-M. I. T. ex
pedition, (headed by Dr. Donald IJ;
Menzel, set up its field observatory at
Ak-Bulak, Russia, where the total
eclipse occurred at 9:15 a.m., Russian
time, or 12:15 a.m. New York time.
