CANADA SUFFERS
FROM HEAT WAVE
IV.TORONTO, Ont., July 10 (TP)
!Ehe sun beat down from a dazzling
sky over Ontario today, ushering In
PAGE NINE
the third day of the worst heat wave
in the history of the Canadian Pro
vince. The temperature reached and
passed the 100-mark at 8 a. m.
It was soaring towards 105 at late
morning. Seven deaths have been at
tributed to the heat. Crops are al
ready seriously burned. There was
no evidence of a let-up. Clear skies
were reported on all sides.
YACHTING RACES
(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 6)
ing an early lead the masterful sail
ing of the Syndicate was more than
responsible for the convincing vic
tory. In third place was Beckman
Huger’s Geechee. Tried for the first
time in actual racing competition,
this boat proved its worth beyond ex
expectations.
Class B found the High Tide taking
an easy victory with Charles Boy
kin’s teal running in the runner up
position. The Flirt ran third closely
pursued by Wade Eve in the Demond.
Class C found Gene Banaud taking
an exciting race from Miss Polly
Chisholm in the Imp. Only a frac
tion of a second separated the two
boats as they crossed the finish line,
and the last spurt by t?he Imp in an
event long to be remembered in
yachting circles. Austin Smith in
the Shearwater was third, closely
followed by Osprey of Beaufort.
Trouble was the winner in the
Class D event with Olin Mclntosh in
Skidaway a loose second. Olin’s broth
er, Billy came in third with his craft.
Scamp. All in all, the day’s events
were run off magnificiently and once
under way the river was a mass of
all types of boats with their canvas
spread to catch the heavy breeze,
which at times reached ten knots per
hour. Today wil! find the boats in a
renewal of their races, the finale tak
ing place tomorrow. The champion
ship will be awarded to the highest
ratings for the two days.
