LITERARY GOSSIP.
—The four-hundredth anniversary
of the introduction of printing into
Englan t by William Caxton, held in
London June ii, was a grand success.
It is proposed to erect a statue, or
monument, to Caxton in the Metropolis
of England.
—j. R. Osgood & Cos. find a ready
■die tor ten different editions of Long
fellow’s poems.
—“Out West” is the title of William
T. Adams’ (“Oliver Optic’s,") fifty
fifth and latest book for boys.
\lacmillan & Cos., have just pub
lished Prof. J. B. Lightfoot’s “St.
Clement of Rome,” which contains the
newly discovered portions of the Two
Epistles to the Corinthians.
—“Sir John Bowring’s Recollec
tions,” edited by Lewis B. Bowring, will
shortly be issued by an English firm.
—lt is said that Tennyson is writing
another drama.
—Jules Verne has made a large for
tune from his books.
Mr. Loyd Branson, of Knoxville,
has completed a fine portrait of the
venerable and highly cultivated Dr. J.
G. M. Ramsey, Tennessee’s historian,
which will be placed in the State Cap
itol.
—Punctuation is peculiar to the
modern languages of Europe. It was
wholly unknown to tile Greeks and
Romans; and the languages of the
East, although they have certain
marks or signs to indicate tones, have
no regular system -of punctuation.
—Speaking of “Christian Reid,”
(Miss Fisher) of North Carolina, who,
within the past three or four years, has
achieved wide and well-deserved fame
as an authoress, a correspondent says :
“Miss Fisher is poor, and deserves
more credit ar.d praise than my pen
can carry. She aids in every way her
father’s family, which is large. Indeed,
I understand she is their mainstay.
She makes but little from ber books.
There is quite a demand for them, but
a friend told me the Appletons bought
out the copyright of each for a low fig
ure, and that was the end of it. She
spends her summers at home, and her
winters with her uncle and aunt, in
Baltimore, who are devoted to her, and
verv p v oud of jher genius. Her new
book is spoken of as the happiest of all
ber efforts, and 1 am told the first edi
tion is already exhausted.”
—The well-known hymn, “Rock of
Ages,” by Toplady, was first published
at pp. 131-2 of Gospel Magazine for
1776, aud is entitled “A Living and
Dying Prayer for the Holiest Believer
in the World,” and bears the signature
of “A. T.”

Xo Sjiibhcrlberi* or I'ltc Grange,
Worthy Brothers— You will please road this
carefully, and give lie an immediato reply.
Iu April, 1873. an able and representative
l>odff Georgia’s beet planters, assembled in
the pity of Macon, and organized ** The Georgia
Staff Grange. Many of the most ardent fiiends
of the cause, felt the necessity for a paper devo
ted especially to the interests of the Order.
Believing that to be the most feasible and effec
tive method of diffusing a knowledge of the iu-
Btitutiau and securing the progress of the noble
brotherhood in this State, the conviction was
made practically operative by the organization
of ‘The Georgia Grange Publishing Company,”
and the publication of The Geohoia Grange.
This paper, through the zeal and enterprise of
its c mantigers. soon attained a largo circulation,
and was formally recognized as the official or
gan of the Patrons of Husbandry in Georgia- It
thou entered with renewed zeal upon its legiti
mate work, and has since faithfully and untir
ingly battled for the cause, 'i lie paper has
been sent out to many who asked for it, on time,
and \v< are now compelled **to rise and say,
that, in consequence of the indulgence extended
to many of our brethren, wo find it necessary to
make this appeal : and wo do directly, most
urgently , and respectfully, appeal to you to re
spond by the paymeut of your subscription due,
and give us the further aid of one year's subscrip
tion io advance. Hit. J. H. LAWTON,
Fob Georgia Grange Publishing Cos.
To this Farmers op Georgia. —We
offer to the Patrons and farmers of
Georgia, for the next ninety days, an
unprecedented opportunity. We offer
them a good farm journal, the official
organ of the State Grange, issued
every week, at the low price of one
dollar per annum. This is about half
the price of farm journals over the
country. Will you not send us your
subscriptions at once? Surely every
farmer can spare the small sum of one
dollar for an agricultural paper.

The Georgia Grange Publishing
Company have determined upon two
things : Ist. To , place a good home
agricultural journal within reach of
the poorest farmer in Georgia; and
2d. To adopt the cash system.
SUBSCRIPTION PRICE.
Consequently, from this date the
subscription price to The Georgia
Grange is one dollar only, for which
the paper will be sent one year, post
paid.
CASH SYSTEM.
We shall open new books, and no
name will be placed on them save for
paid subscriptions. This rule is unal
terable. It is more profitable to fur
nish a paper at a low price to those
who pay, than to charge more on a
credit system, and lose a great part of
just dues.
For thus placing a good weekly farm
journal at this unprecedented price,
we think we should receive the support
of at least every Georgia farmer. We
shall give them the opportunity. For the
next ninety days the offer is open. One
dollar received within this period will
pay for T’he Grange for one year.

To Granges sending delegates to Sessions of
State Grange.:
Owing to the depleted condition of our Treas
ury, we hereby earnestly and respectfully re
quest of each of you to arrange with your dele
gates to waive thef. right in the matter of per
diems. Where yoifr local treasuries are able to
caßh these per diem claims, and your delegates
unable to do without, extend your State Treasu
ry the helping hand in this the hour of her
need—meet the claim of your delegate and still
continue to forward your dues otherwise going
to pay said delegates. We ask this as a favor,
and do not demand it as a light. The urgency
of tlio case is our only plea—the good of the
Order requires it Every item of expense nec
essary to the management of your State organi
zation liaH been reduced to a minimum point.
We believe the above, for a temporary period,
will meet all the requirements upon us, when
our finances will again bo placed upon a solid
basis. Three-fourths of the reports received at
your State Secretary's office are from Granges
whose quarterly dues are paid to their delegates
hence our condition. Brother Patrons, we
appeal to you in earnestness and fraternal as
surance. Without your sympathy in the prem

the State of Georgia is imminently endangered.
