THE JACKSON BOYS-
TOBE AND SAM BOTH ESCAPE FROM
BABTOW COUNTY' JAIL.
Saturday's Special to the At
lanta Journal: There is much ex
citement in Cartersville this morn
ing over the escape trotn the Bar
tow county jail last night of Tobe
and Sam Jackson, the two biothets
who were convicted and sentenced
to the penitentiary for complicity
in the famous dynamite case. To' e
was convicted several months ago,
and was sent to the penitentiary
tor ten years. He was brought
here from the coal mines to testify
against hL» brother Sam and Dr.
Baker, both of whom he had im
plicated. Sam was convicted and
Dr. Baker was pronounced not
guilty.
Yesterday S im was sentenced to
six years imprisonment. The two
brothers were placed in a cell to
gether, in the upper tier of the
jail, last night. During the fore
part of the night, by means of a
key-hole saw, they succeeded in
sawing an opening in the solid
timbers forming the roof of the
cell through which they crawled.
When on top oi the cell it was
comparatively easy tor them to
make a hole through the root by
knocking oft' the slate, and then,
by means of blankets, they lower
ed themselves to the ground and
made their escape.
About one o’clock this morning
the two brothers stopped at the
house of a man named Ben Jones,
and alter waking him gave him the
saw and file which they had used,
requesting him tj take them to the
jail officials so as to show them
that they had no help from the
outside. Tobe further told Mr.
Jones that he had made his escape
simply to help his brother Sam
out; that the latter hadn’t sen.-e
enough to get out by himself
They then bade Mr. Jones good
night, and the latter hurried to the
jail and gave the alarm. The sur
prise of Jailor Williams may be
well imagined. A brief investiga
tion showed that lhe birds had
flown, and a posse was at once or
ganized to go in pursuit of them.
At last accounts no trace of them
had been secured,’ and owing to
the fact that they have friends all
over the country it may prove dif
ficult, even if it is possible, to
catch them.
Far better than the har u h treatment of medi
cines which horribly gripe the patient and de
stroy the coating or the stomach. Dr. J. H.
McLean’s Chills and Fever Cure by mild yet
effective action will cui e. Sold at 50 cents a
bottle. For sale by all druggist.
