Very ancier t observatories are said to
have been erected on the top of the tem
pleof Heins, at Babylon; on the tomb of
Osvmandyas, in Egypt; and at Benares.
The first in authentic history was erected
by Ptolemy Sotcr at Alexandria, about
300 B. C.
From an examination of butter from

A new method of making car-wheels is
in use in Wilkes Barre, Penn., by which
three men, who formerly made eighteen
car-wheels a day, can now make one
every minute, or 720 a day. A steel case
is used instead of one of sand, and when
removed the wheel is at once ready for
the axle.
By means of a mixture of pulverized
magnesium, chloride of potash and sul
phide of antimony, Messrs. Goldicke
and Miethe produce an explosive, light

to be of mnch value in photography. The
flash lasts one-fortieth of a second, and
provides a cheap and practical method
of securing instantaneous pictures at
night or in dark places.
The discovery of a new gas is a rare
and important event to chemists. Such
a discovery has been announced in Ger
many by Dr. Theodor Curtins, who has
succeeded in preparing the long-sought
hydride of nitrogen, amidogen, diamide,
or hydrazine, as it is variously called.
This" remarkable body, which has hith
erto baffled all attempts at isolation, is
now shown to be a gas, perfectly stable
up to a very high temperature, of a pe
culiar odor differing from that of am
monia, exceedingly soluble in water, and
of basic properties. In composition it is
nearly identical with ammonia, both
being compounds of nitrogen and hydro
gen.
Dr. Hellmann’s researches show that in
Schleswig-Holstein, during a period of
ten years, of all the buildings struck by
lightning only 9 percent, of those with
“hard’’ rooting caught tire, while G 8 per
cent, of those with “soft” roofing caught
tire. The risk from lightning to churches
and bell towers was thirty-nine time-,
and to windmills fifty-two times greater
than to ordinary hard-roofed buildings.
The danger from lightning decreases also
with the increase of the number of houses
in a given district. In the rural districts
of Prussia the risk is five times greater
than in the cities. It was found that the
geological features of the ground had
much to do with the frequency of light
ning strokes, flat and moist lands, espe
cially with loam, being most exposed to
the deadly thunderbolt.
A Child’s Tears.
Once when a child was ill unto death
its mother kneeled and prayed to Heaven
that its life might be spared. As she
prayed and wept an angel softly took its
place beside her and whispered:
“Heaven has sent me in answer to your
prayer. Here is the mirror of life;
watch well and tell me what you see.”
And then as the mother wiped away
her tears and held the mirror before her
the angel asked:
“What is the picture?”
“It is that of a fair-faced boy of ten.”
“Are there tears in his eyes?”
“There arc no tears.”
"Then the angels of Heaven are weep
ing for him. Look again and tell me
what you see.”
"This time it is a youth of fifteen. It
is the same boy as before, but older
grown, and the face is not so gentle.”
“Arc there tears in his eyes?”
• “There are no tears.”
“Then there is sadness among the
angels in Heaven. When human eyes
are dry of tears the heart is full of evil.”
Then the mother looked-again. and
when the angel asked what she saw she
answered:
“One just coming to man’s estate. It
is the same face as before, but it is in the i
darkness, and I see lines of evil.”
"Look closer and tell me if you see !
tears.”
“There are no tears.”
“Then there is grief in Heaven, and
heart-aches on earth. He who never
weeps has gone far wrong. Look again I
and tell me what you see.”
“Ihis time it is a man in convict’s I
garb, and his evil look appalls my heart.” i
"Are there no tears in his eyes?”
“There are no tears.”
■‘lhen the angles of Heaven weep. ;
" ithout tears there can be no repent- :
ance. I charge you to look once more.”
“This time it is one lying dead in the '
darkness—no watchers —no one to weep
nothing but the gloom of night
around him'.”
"And are there tears upon the face of
the dead?”
" There are no tears.”
"Ihen, alas! it is another soul con
signed to everlasting darkness! Turn
the glass ami look for the last time.
Wh it do you behold?”
"A child—my child upon its bed of
sickness. Oh! Angel of Mercy, I pray
thee to spare its sweet young life!”
“Are there tears?”
“Aye! there are tears!”

angels of Heaven shall rejoice as I bear

Salvationists for Germany.
The Salvation Army is making renewed
efforts togain a footing in Germany. Its
organ, the Heilsruf, says that the Sal
vation Army is nowhere more urgently
needed th in in Germany, “a country of
■IO,OO ',OOO highly intelligent and indus
trious people, who are nevertheless
steeped in darkness and unbelief.” But
in order to save the millions now “given
over in infidelity and drunkenness” much
money is required, and this the Heilsruf
hopes so in to see forthcoming. The city
ot Worms is to be the first object of at
tack, and two other stations, one in
Wurtcmberg, the other in North Ger
