EDITORIAL NOTES.
Bacon and cotton were each
quoted at 9 cents in Augusta on
Wednesday.
Mr. McCord’s bill appropriating
$.5,000 for repairs at the State
University has passed.
A negro boy about twelve years
old died of hydrophobia, in Put
nam county, a few days since.
Extensive preparations arc be
ing made for the reception of ex-
President Davis, during the Fair
nt Macen.
Well said by the Augusta Ga
zette : “Only the man who never
makes a mistake can afford to be
unforgiving.”
Leading city dailies do not like
to declare on the side of prohibi
tion, perhaps, because a tew dol
lars will be out of pocket.
The Macon Telegraph’s attack
•on Judge Simmons is only charac
teristic of that journal. Whoever
knew it to agree with any one, if
there was a chance to do other
wise?
From a private source we learn
that a sufficient number of bonds
men for Mr. Robert Jones have
not yet been secured, but it is
confidently expected that the
requisite number will bo obtained
next week.
An attempt was made a few
days since by a negro to poison
the family of Mr. J. J. Lee, a
prominent merchant of Augusta,
by drugging a syrup jeg, which
was discovered in time to prevent
the intended poisoning.
On Wednesday, the Legislature
in joint session elected Hoti. Thus.
J. Simmons, of Bibb, to till the
vacancy on the Supreme Court
bench, caused by the death ot
Justice Hall. A better selection
could not have been made.
The cotton handlers of New
Orleans are on a strike, it would
be .a good thing it the cotton rais
ers could go on a strike until
puces improve, but. alas! in a
majority of eases the crop is all
sold before it is gathered.
Walton News: A paragraph is
going the rounds that nearly nil the
Wi men of the Salvation Army
have a heart worked in India ink
upon the right shoulder. In case
any one of them is taken sick or
dies away from home, or in a for
eign country, the sign of the
heart will entitle her to care or a
suitable burial at the expense of
the organization, no matter
whether she is or is not in good
standing. From the general run
of the female waniors seen tramp
ing through the streets of the
cities one would conclude that
there was great need of beauty
marks to give them countenance
nnvwherc.
