NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC TICKET.
FOR PRESIDENT,
HON. GROVER CLEVELAND
OF NEW YORK.
FOR VICE-PR ESII) ENT,
HON. THOMAS A. HENDRICKS !
OF INDIANA.
FOR CONGRESS
Tenth Conor ess ion a i, District,
JVCao-G-eo.T-. Barnes,
OF
RICHMOND COUNTY.
They lire Honest.
The Democrats will he able to say
nothing in favor of their candidates
for President and Vice President
that will appeal so strongly to Un¬
people for support as that they are
honest. No man can say a word a
gainst their integrity. When the
campaign has fairly opened and the
newspapers anil the stump orators
arc deluging the country with tin
eloquence and arguments, the
statement that tiie Democratic cam!
idates are honest will he more elfee
live than the most brilliant, speech
or the ablest editorial. To confound
and silence the noisiest Republican
speakers it wjll he only necessary to
state that t he Democratic candidates
are honest,. What, the country wauls
now is an honest matt rather than a
brilliant man for President. Blaine’s
brilliancy is admitted. His wealth
of resources is not questioned; but
who is ready to trust him implicitly?
It is said that when he was speaker
lie was able .to handle his party with
the greatest ease, although there
were at the time some very brilliant
men fo the House. His knowledge
of parti, valient ary rules was so
thorough and his acquaintance with
parliamentary tricks so intimate that
lie surprised friends and enemies a
like by the facility and ease with
which he could silence a minority or
defeale a majority. But what is a
reputation of that kind worth at a
time like this and in a contest for
the highest office in the gift of the
people! What the people want is a
thoroughly honest man. For almost
a quarter of a century the Republi
can party has been in control of the
government, and during that time
there have been many strange re
ports relative to crookedness in va
lious departments of the government,
and there have been many discov
eries which sustained the reports,
Within the last two months embozz
foments of public property have been
discovered in at least three of the
departments of the government.
There is a widespread impression
that an honest investigation would
show that the government has been
systematically robbed for years.
Thc people t want to know win Bur or
. . . r lhey „,
impression iseenroet,
liave np way of finding out the truth
except by electing an honest man to
the Presidency. They know that
Grover Cleveland is honest. He has
•
been tested, and has stood the test.
As the campaign progresses the de¬
mand for an honest man for Presi¬
dent will increase. Blaine cannot
supply this demand, and he inis noth¬
ing to offer which flip people art
willing to accept in preference to
honesty.— Snv. News.
A Startling 1 Statement.
A man named Benedick, who lias
recently escaped from the Sandwich
Islaipks, makes the staitling state¬
ment that fully 80,000 American cit¬
izens are held in bondage on those
Islands. Benedick says that he was
engaged at San Francisco to go to
Honolulu as a hotel waiter at §50 a
month. When he landed in- was
placed in a pen with hundreds of
men and women, ami the next day
the planters came in, picked out
their laborers and sen! them to the
field under guard. It was useless to
.protest. They found that they were
^‘xpeetod to go to work at fifty cents
a day. They were docked without
mercy and fined every time they
took a chew of tobacco. At the end
of the month,Benedick was informed
that he was §133 in debt to his em¬
ployer, and a contract was shown
him with his name forged to it bind¬
ing him to serve two years. Fortu¬
nately Benedick had §500 conceal¬
ed on his person. Kith §400 lie
succeeded in buying' his liberty, and
at on.ee returned to Hun Francisco.
If he tells tlie truth, an odious and
oppressive system of slavery exists
in the Sandwich Islands.— Constitu¬
tion.

The present presidential election
year has been even more prolific
than usual in outrages committed by
black fiends upon white ladies of the
South. Scarcely a week passes that
on'.' or more of these terrible crimes
are not reported through the public
prints, Two or three lynching.s have
already taken place in Georgia,while
in Dallas, Texas, a reign of terror
has existed for some time past. Lit¬

alone in safety beyond the reach of
immediate aid. The negroes seem,
to think that the presidential election
year gives them license to commit
these heinous crimes with impunity.
