THOMSON. GA., MAY. 7. 1909
HON JOHN t SMITH.
On the first pn^e of tlii.H issue
of tl#3 Progress will lie found a
tribute to Hon. John E. Smith.
It is from the scolarly pen of Rev,
Tlios. H. Timmons which alone
insures it to ho a literary produc
tion of rare beauty and worth, but
it is more than that.; it is u justly
deserved and well merited tribute
to a, man who has served well in
his day and time hie people, his
State and his Church,
HAY DAY.
Last Saturday was the first of
the month and a large crowd of
peoplo camo to Thomsen. In one
sense it was pay day, ia another
it was ration day, but to a large
fminbef of our people both white
and colored it was "hay day." .
Wo often her of ’‘the nay day
Of youth,” but last Saturday was
no respecter hfage, for it was bay
<lay for the old as well us the
young. Nothing liko it was ever
seen before. For a time the
streots were literally lined with
wagons loaded with hay bought at
from twenty to twenty-five dollors
per ton.
Vainly the funner says he can’t
make cotton and buy hay at such
prices, and yet he continues to
do it.
When the present crop is gather
ed who is there to say how much
of it will have to go to pay for lnvy
to say nothing of earn and other
stock feed.
Ver ly. verily, this is a grout
country in which wo live., other
wise we would have struck ro.k
bottom long ago.
PLANTING WATERMELONS.
There will bo morn watermelons
planted f"r market nrotmd Thom
son this year tnat any within the
last decade, and we hope and lx?-
linve that the planters will strike
it right. It rs manifest to nl 1
now that tho peach crop will be
very small, and when this is the
ease watermelons usually bring
a good prieo.
And another thing: It helps
some to loeak into the monotony
of the one crop,—cotton. They
come in and are ready for the
market at. a lime when nothing
else is ready for sale, and we hope
our planters will realize good re
turns- Tho Georgia watermelon
is becoming a part of our money
crop, and will continue to increas' -
as long as tho prices are remuner
ative.
COTTON THE CHEAPEST
OF THEM ALL.
Without, doubt the principal
crop produced by the South this
year will be cotton. And it will
lie the cheapest of all tho agricul
tural products,
It is true that the price is now
ubouf ten cents, and it may he
that this crop will sell for that.
If it dees, it will still bo the cheap
est of the agricultural products.
Corn $1.00 per bushel, meat 11
cents, lard 18 cents, Hour 7.00 per
barrel and hay $20.00 per ton.
Lot the South soil the next crop
at ten cents and buy these other
products at the prices named and
it will place a heavier burden on
the South than she now bears.
Tho disposition to reduce tho
crops «f corn, peas and other food
stud's, and put in more cotton is
placing the South in a perilous
position.
Another big cotton crop with
low prices will bring about a situ
ation that. ill proe i pit at o a crush
in the affairs of many men who
have thus far weathered the
storm.
