Q. What people first paved the
streets of their towns and built paved
roads?
A. The Carthaginians are said to
have been the first to pave their
town; the Romans in the time of
Augustas had pavements in many
of their streets; the Appian Way, a
paved road was constructed 312 B.
C. Pavements of blocks of lava;
worn into ruts by wheels, are found
in Herculaneum and Pompeii. Roads
built of heavy flags of free stone, of
unknown age, exist in Peru, 1500 to
2000 miles in extent. In Mexico
among the ruins of Palenque are
found pavements of large square
blocks of stone.

AREY Asphalt Roll Roofings cost but a
fraction of the price of tile, slate, metal,
or wood shingles.
They can be laid in a small fraction of the
time it takes to lay other kinds of roofing.
In spite of their low cost Carey Roll Roof
ings serve from 10 to 20 years—depending on
the weight of the particular roofing. If coated
occasionally, they will last much longer. Thus
Carey Roll Roofings represent the LOWEST
POSSIBLE COST PER YEAR OF SERVICE.

Q. Did Pope Gregory institute a
reform in the method of prayers?
A. Historians say that in 593 Pope
Gregory inrtoduced the custom of
having prayers addressed to the Vir
gin Mary and to the Saints.
Q. What is meant by “log roll
ing?”
A. This is a common term in the
United States for legislative combi
nation. When the supporters of two
or more measures, in a legislature or
in Congress, join forces, and each set
supported the measure of the other
in exchange for similar aid, the un
ion was formerly called log rolling.
Now they call it by other more pro
fane names.
Q. Do the Representatives of
foreign governments at Washington,
1). C., display the Stars and Stripes?
A. No. The Embassy or Le
gation of a foreign government is
under the jurisdiction, and functions
according to the law of the country
it represents. Therefore the German
Embassy at Washington is pre
sumably as much in Germany as
though the building and grounds were
situated in Berlin. On the day of
the funeral of former President Wil
son it was not expected that the
German Embassy would display the
Stars and Stripes. The popular pro
test that arose was due to the ab
sence of the German flag at half-
staff, and all was well on the Potomac
when the haughty Germans half-
staffed their, own national banner.
Q. Will you please state a few
first-aid remedies in cases of faint
ing?
A. Place the person flat on back;
allow fresh air, and sprinkle with
water. Place head lower than rest
of body.
Q. How did the ringing of the
“curfew bell” oringinate and when?
A. The practice of ringing the
curfew bell originated in England
in the time of William the Conquer
or, who directed that at the ringing’
of the bell at eight o’clock all fires
and lights should be extinguished.
In the United States an ordinance
established a curfew for the purpose
of keeping young people off the
streets at night, as early as the Puri
tan days. • With regard to the extin
guishing of fire and lights it would
appear that there was a fuel admin
istrator before Garfield occupied that
position in our own national adminis
tration during the war. Curfew
means cover fire.
Q. 1 would like to know if the “old
clock on the stair” referred to in
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem
of that title, was the old clock in the
Cambridge home?
A. “The Old Clock on the Stair”
was suggested by an old farm-house
timepiece at the country home of
Mr. Appleton, his father-in-law.
While this home was in the country,
the description answers well to the
poet’s own residence, which also con
tained an eight-day clock, which
reached from floor to ceiling. Many
people never so much as doubted that
the Cragie House and its clock were
meant in this poem.
Q. Is it true that Pope Innocent
III proclaimed a crusade against here
tics and murdered 60,000 at Beziers
and 100,000 Albigenses?
A. The Albigenses was a sect op
posed to the Church of Rome whom
Pope Innocent III tried to suppress.
The town of Beziers was completely
destroyed and 60,000 persons were
massacred in 1209. This was one
of the bloodiest religious wars, of
which the world has had too many,
in all history. Pope Innocent III is
accused in history as being the cause
of the crusade which practically ex
terminated the Albigenses, but the
personal guilt might be compared to
that of the Kiser of Germany in the
late war. No ruler can conduct a
crusade or carry on a war alone.
Q. Is there any public provision
for the care of blind pedestrians?
A. That is a matter entirely of
local police regulations ,and in most
cities blind people are responsible for
their own safety. Washington has
recently issued an order providing
Q. What is the meaning of “1
inch of rain?”
A. A rainfall of 1 inch over one
acre of ground would mean 6,272,640
cubic inches of water, the equiva
lent of 3,630 cubic i'eet. As a cubic
foot of pure water V'eighs (52.4
pounds, the weight of the water on
an acre of ground 1 inch deep would
he 226,512 pounds.
Q. Kindly tell me the definition of
blunderbuss.
A. A blunderbuss is a short gun,
unrifled and of large bore, widening
towards the muzzle. It is not ranked
with arms of precision, but is loaded
with many halls or slugs, which- scat
ter when fired so that there is hope
of some one of them hitting t : ie
mark. A person who habitually
blunders is sometimes referred to,
disdainfully, as a “blunderbuss.”
Q. What are the symbols of the
Evangelists, Mathew, Mark, Lue,
and John?
A. Matthew has a scroll before
him and holds a pen. Mark sits writ
ing, with a winged lion by his side.
Luke has a pen and scroll; near him
is an ox. John is a young man be
hind whom is an angel.
The secret of success is hard work and
dear thinking’. The industrious person
earns more than his necessary expenses,
and the thinking person saves this surplus
and deposits it in a GOOD STRONG BANK.
It is never too soon to begin saving. Get the
habit of saving. The sooner you start the
greater will be your success.
Financial success is simply a matter of
sticking to your saving habit—making your
