The Hallmark of Qood Taste
in Interior Decoration
T HE bell rings, the visitor enters, and
the first point that claims the eye is
the staircase. And that first impression
lingers long. If China Enamel, with its
soft, alluring, eye-winning beauty, has
included the staircase in its decorative
service, there’s pride in the eyes of the
housewife.
And so with mouldings, window casings,
doors, pillars, wainscoting — wherever
used it is the hallmark of good taste in
interior decoration.
It is made in Pure White, Ivory, Putty
color, Dove Gray and Washington Blue
—in eggshell or gloss finish.

Back of Poles, Wire and Cable
Is Intricate Apparatus
'OLES, wire and cable do not make a completed telephone sys
tem. Back of every pole, every strand of wire, every mile of
cable added to the Bell Telephone System in Georgia last year
lere was an enormous quantity of apparatus and equipment.
New switchboard and central office equipment was installed
at a cost of more than $727,000.
Additional equipment for subscribers’ stations amounted to
more than $700,000.
The new outside plant at local exchanges and additions to build
ings represented an expenditure of more than $720,000.
Altogether there was an investment of more than $2,400,000
in additional telephone plant in Georgia last year.
The telephone workers broke all previous construction records
by completing the biggest job of the kind ever undertaken in this
State.
An even bigger programme is before us this year, requiring our
best efforts and your continued co-operation.

Mr. G. C. Daniel, County Agent,
Thomson, Ga.
Dear Sir:—We have forwarded to
our agent at Thomson one lot of
Laredo soybeans to be used for dem
onstration purposes. Last year we
had good success with these beans
and it is our hope that you will put
some out with enthusiastic farmers
and receive encouragement in the
growing of Laredo beans.
When the beans are harvested I
would appreciate a report on the suc
cess you have had with this project.
All of the beans we have placed
out, we have placed on a basis of
receiving twice the amount of beans
when same are harvested. This is
for the purpose of encouraging the
enterprise and replacing the beans
again in your own county for further
demonstration work.
If you will kindly call on our
agent at your station on these lines
he will be glad to turn the beans over
to you, no charge.
Yours very truly,
E. S. CENTER, Jr.,
General Agricultural Agent, Georgia
Railroad.
LAREDO SOY BEANS.
The Laredo soy bean is a medium
early variety with a growing habit
somewhat like the O-too-tan in that
its bushy growth consists of a large
number of fine stems, though unlike
the O-too-tan in that the stems put
out at the ground and are heavily
fruited from the base to the tips of
the branches.
As a producer of seed the Laredo
ranks as one of the highest and about
as good as the best as a hay pro
ducer, in tons per acre. In quality of
hay, it ranks very high on account
of the high grade content per unit
of hay.
The Laredo soy bean is both wilt
resistant and nomatode resistant,
making it suited to a wider range
of soils and farm uses than any
other variety. It is the only soy bean
we have that is safe for orchards
where nomatodes must be guarded
against.
As a soil builder the Laredo ranks
favorably with other summer legumes
making equal growth.
Generally speaking, the varieties
of soy beans suited to southern con
ditions rank next to cotton as far as
certainty of growth is concerned;
that is, growing a crop of soy beans
is about as certain as growing a crop
of cotton stalks. This is due to the
fact that the soy bean is naturally a
hardy plant and able to withstand
extremes of weather conditions.
The Laredo soy bean is a certain
fruiter and a good crop is assured
where it is given a fair showing.
Soy beans are remarkably free from
insect pests, weevil damage, molds
and mildows, which have - made the
growing of cowpeas so uncertain.
The Type of Land Best Suited to
Laredo.
Laredo soy beans will grow on any
land suited to cotton or corn. Where
these crops do the best Laredo beans
do the best. Some of the best lands
should always be put in Laredo soy
beans and not just the land that
needs to be built up. it is often the
ease that a soy bean crop on the best
land brings the best return. This
applies doubly strong in the case of
Laredo beans, where the seed are so
valuable.
Time For Planting.
Laredo Soy beans may be planted
from the earliest cotton planting date
to the first of July with reasonably
certainty of a good crop. The larger
yields may be expected on the earlier
planting as the stalks will be larger
when fruiting begins. These beans j
are always heavily fruited from hot- j
tom to top, so the larger the stalk, j
the better the seed yield. Good re
sults may ne obtained with Laredos
after grain.
Fertilization.
As a rule soy beans need no other
fertilizer than acid phosphate. Up
to 400 pounds per acre pays well,
especially on the earlier plantings.
Rate of Seeding.
The seed of the Laredo are very
small and one bushel will plant from
eight to ten acres in 2 1-2 feet rows.
Almost any late model planter will
plant Laredo satisfactorily by using
the proper plate. The seed should be
dropped three to six inches apart in
the drill for seed and somewhat closer
for hay. The seed should be covered
very lightly, not more than one inch, I
and it is best to plant following a |
season.
Cultivation.
As soon as the beans are large
enough to cultivate without destroy
ing the stand they should be cultivat- I
ed lightly and afterwards cultivation j
should be frequent enough to provide |
a mulch, as one would cultivate cot- ;
ton. Usually not more than four cul- j
tivations are necessary. If the beans j
are to be cut for hay and grass is ;
not objected to, the number of culti- ,
vations may he cut down.
Time of Maturing. 1
Laredo Soy Beans mature around ;
the latter part of September, or the
first part of October, regardless of j
the time of planting. When harvest- |
ed for seed they should be cut before
they are so ripe that the beans shat- j
ter. The time to harvest is when the j
pods are beginning to turn brown.
Harvesting.
Laredo soy beans may be harvested
for seed with an ordinary mower,
mower with buncher attachment or
with grain hinder. In either case it
is best to cut and rake the beans be- j
fore they are over-ripe and while the I
dew is on.
Inoculations.
It is advisable to inoculate soy
beans when they are to be planted on |
land that has not grown this crop
within the last few years. Artificial ,
cultures may be used,
