After the purchase of Alaska several
names were suggested for the new pos¬
session, among them Walrussia, Amer¬
ican Siberia, Zero Islands and Polario.
The name now used was proposed by
Charles Sumner, who stated it to be
that bestowed by the Indians them¬
selves and given to Captain Cook with
the Information that it signified ‘ the

The Return From the Funeral.
Near a cemetery a wine shop has
been discovered with an attractive and
thoughtful advertisement. The public
house calls itself “At the Sign of the
Return From the Funeral.” The
botird underneath bears this consider¬
ate announcement: ‘‘Private Rooms For
Persons Desirous of Weeping Alone.

"small pupils. Tommy was bright
enough, but uot overdiligent, arid the
teacher saw that unless he applied
himself he could not be promoted at
the end of the terra. “You must study
harder,” she told him, “or else you
won’t pass. How would you like to
stay back in this grade another year
and have little Mary go ahead of you?"
“Aw.” said Tommy in a blase tone,
"1 guess there’ll be other little Marys.”

During the Abyssinian war a com¬
pany of the navaJ brigade assisted the
troops in transport work. The sailors
had great difficulty in managing the
mules, and George A. Henty, the au¬
thor, who acted as a correspondent
during the war, relates that he saw a
- untie being led by a sailor with another
tar walking behind holding the animal
by its tail.
“Hello, Jack!” cried a sailor “Where
are you going?"
“Don't know," replied Jack. “I'm
only towing this ere craft. Ask my
mate behind; he's doing the steering!”
Peacock Superstitions.
According to Mohammedan tradition,
the peacock opened the wicket of para¬
dise to admit the prince of darkness
and received a share of his punish¬
ment. The feathers, gorgeous in their
hellish dye, cetiect the glamour of the
evil eye. Hence the origin of the su¬
perstition that peacocks' feathers are
unlucky, though the superstition is
sometimes said to have Us origin in
the fable of Argus, whom Juno set.to
watch lo, one of her husband’s mis¬
tresses. Argus was beguiled by Mer¬
cury and lulled to sleep by bis playing
thus allowing lo to escape. Juno, to
punish Argus, placed his many eyes
in the tail of her peacock, who thence¬
forth proudly displayed them. Thus a
peacock's feather became tbe symbol
of watchful and vindictive jealousy
There was an old superstition that
peacocks ruffled their feathers at the
iight of poison.

Calcutta Talks Fifty-seven Ways.
Calcutta is one of the' most polyglot
capitals in the world. The last census
shows fifty-seven languages are spoken
In It. Not many of these, of course,
are spoken by large sections its
million Inhabitants, but English, Ben¬
gali, Urdu, Hindoo and Uriya are the
media through” which its trade and
commerce are mainly carried on. As
regards the schools, Sanskrit, Persian
and Arabic fill a more important place
than Greek and Latin, French, Ger¬
man or Italian do in England. Ben¬
gali is the most numerously spoken
of the vernaculars. It has a mellow,
pleasant cadence, not unlike Italian,
and although It is a comparatively
modern language it has a great wealth
of literature, journalistic and other.
Half a dozen Bengali newspapers are
published daily, while of weekly ver¬
nacular papers the name is Jegion.—
