Area Death Notices
Charlie Smith
Charlie Ellington Smith, 83, of
Baldwin, died Sunday, May 18, 2008,
at a private care facility, following an
extended illness.
He was born in Pickens County,
S.C., on August 15, 1924, the son of the
late George Earl and Mary Elizabeth
Anderson Smith. He was a member
of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in
Banks County. He served his com
munity faithfully in law enforcement,
having retired as Chief of Police with
the Demorest Police Department
and formerly served in the Jackson
County Sheriff's Department and
the Cornelia Police Department. Mr.
Smith was preceded in death by his
wife, Mildred Tench Smith; broth
ers, George Earl Smith Jr., Raymond
Smith, Walter Smith; and sisters, Sadie
and Annie Nations.
Survivors include daughters, Sandra
and Billy Joe Barrett, Hollingsworth,
Phyllis Smith and special friend, Steve
Sosby, Toccoa, Wanda and Phil Perry,
Cornelia, Denise and Steve Holland,
Hollingsworth; sister, Rachel Davis,
Gastonia, N.C.; seven grandchildren;
eight great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday,
May 20, at Whitfield Funeral Home
with the Rev. Ralph Smith and Larry
Whitfield officiating. Burial was in
Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery,
Banks County.

Freder Wade
Freder Roberts Wade, 84, of Alto,
died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at
Athens Regional Medical Center in
Athens, following an extended ill
ness.
Born in Banks County on March 19,
1924, she was the daughter of the late
Ben Roberts and Lou Eller Wade. She
attended the Pleasant Grove United
Methodist Church and was a home
maker. Mrs. Wade was preceded in
death by her husband, Woodrow B.
Wade; a brother, Lonnie Roberts; and
sisters, Mae Wade, Maude Dodd, Leler
Goodson, Montine Purdy, Josie Wade
and Inez Roberts.
Survivors include daughters and
sons-in-law, Nancy and Archie
Browning, Clarkesville; son and daugh
ter-in-law, Harold and Brenda Boling
Wade, Alto, and Benford and Jennifer
Lee Wade; sister, Pauline Thomas,
Alto; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grand
children; and special granddaughter,
Melinda Wade Mull.
Funeral services were held Friday,
May 16, at the Pleasant Grove
Methodist Church with Pastors Mike
Franklin and Pennie Eddy, and the
Revs. Danny Masters and Carlton
Bates officiating. Burial was at Yonah
Memorial Gardens with the Revs.
Clyde Garrison and Don McLean
officiating.

Mark Bounxayseng
Mark Souk Bounxayseng, 65, of
Baldwin, died Monday, May 19, 2008,
at his residence, following an exten
ded illness.
He was born on August 6, 1942, in
Nongkhai, Thailand, the son of the
late Mr. and Mrs. Verne Bounxayseng.
He was retired from Mt. Vernon Mills
with 20 years of dedicated servi
ce and was a member of the Wat
LaoKhambouengheung in Baldwin.
Mr. Bounxayseng was preceded in
death by a son, Phet Bounxayseng.
Survivors include his wife, Phou
Bounxayseng, Baldwin; daughters,
Sai Bounxayseng and Amy
Bounxayseng, both of Baldwin; gran
dchildren, Caitlyn, Jacob and Joseph
Bounxayseng.
Funeral services will be held
Saturday, May 24, at the Whitfield
Funeral Home with the Monks from
the Wat LaoKhambouengheung offi
ciating.
The family will receive friends at
the funeral home Thursday, May 22,
from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and on
Friday, May 23, from 3 to 5 p.m. and
7 to 9 p.m.

Mattie Sears
Mattie Roberta Wideman Sears, 73,
of Commerce, died Sunday, May 18,
2008.
She was the daughter of the late
Herbert and Selma Wideman and
was a homemaker. Mrs. Sears was
preceded in death by her husband,
Dwayne Sears; a daughter, Kathy
Sears; brothers, Ralph Wideman, Jim
Frank Wideman; and sisters, Maude
Wideman Dallas and Cleo Wideman
Brewer.
Survivors include sons and daugh
ters-in-law, Larry and Ava Sears,
Allardt, Tenn., Jerry and Karen Sears,
Carnesville, and Phillips Sears,
Commerce; daughters and sons-in-
law, Carolyn and Brent Jennings,
Greenwood, S.C., Eva and Jerry Peek
and Tina Sears, all of Commerce,
Tammie and Tommy Pinnell, Lula;
brothers, Thomas Wideman and
Mason Wideman, both of McCormick,
S.C.; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grand
children; and two great-great-grand
children.
Funeral services were held Tuesday,
May 20, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral
Home with the Revs. Danny Oliver
and David Carithers officiating. Burial
was in the Grove Level Baptist Church
cemetery.

Freddie Wood
Freddie Alma Short Wood, 96, of
Commerce, died Sunday, May 18,
2008, at Northeast Georgia Medical
Center in Gainesville.
She was born on September 20,
1911, in Jackson County, the daughter
of the late Thomas Coy and Hettie
Moss Short. She was the oldest
female member of Mt. Olive Baptist
Church, where she had been a mem
ber since joining at age 11. She was
a retired Seamstress from Commerce
Sportswear and Oxford. Mrs. Wood
was preceded in death by her hus
band, Joe Brown Wood; and a sister,
Ada Fay Webb.
Survivors include daughters and
son-in-law, Barbara and Raymond
Adams, Chamblee, and Marie and
Wendell Perry, Gainesville, Carolyn
Hayes, Sautee-Nacoochee; sister, Jane
Short Irvin, Gillsville; seven grand
children; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday,
May 20, at Little-Ward Funeral Home
with the Revs. Derry Oliver and
Henry Webb officiating. Burial was in
the Jackson Memorial Gardens.

Judy Pafford
Judy Bradberry Pafford, 63, of
Commerce, died Wednesday, May 14,
2008.
She was born in Jackson County,
the daughter of the late Connie W. and
Pauline Hogan Bradberry. She was a
member of Union Baptist Church and
was employed as an assistant manager
in sales at the Lodge Cast Iron.
Survivors include her husband,
Tommy Pafford, Commerce; sons and
daughters-in-law, Rhett and Jessica
Childers, Commerce, Travis and
Donna Childers, Bogart; daughter and
son-in-law, Tara and Robert Faulkner,
Statham; 13 grandchildren; a brother,
Bobby Bradberry, Nicholson; and sev
eral nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday,
May 16, at Smith Memory Chapel
with the Rev. Donald Clark offici
ating. Burial was at Union Baptist
Church cemetery.

Russell Koons
Russell Koons, 35, of Tellico Plains,
Tenn., formerly of Maysville, died
Tuesday, May 13, 2008.
Born on March 23, 1973, he was the
son of Mary Koons of Vonore, Tenn.
and the late Bob Koons. Mr. Koons
was preceded in death by a baby son,
Ryan Koons.
Survivors include his wife, Kim; a
son, Andrew Koons, Acworth; daugh
ter, Jenna, Tellico Plains, Tenn.; step
daughter, Jessica, Tellico Plains, Tenn.;
brother and sister-in-law, Ken and
Kathy Koons, Madisonville, Tenn.;
sister and brother-in-law, Felicia and
Thomas Moon, Maysville; and several
nieces, nephews and friends.
Services were held at Biereley-Hale
chapel and burial was in Coppinger
Cemetery in Tellico Plains, Tenn.

'Bud' Parham
J.G. “Bud” Parham, 87, of Cornelia,
died Saturday, May 17, 2008, at the
Northeast Georgia Medical Center in
Gainesville.
He was born June 29, 1920, in Clarke
County, the son of i. . —
the late J.B. and Alice
Dalton Parham. He was
a graduate of Homer
High School and a
1939 graduate of Habersham College.
He was a veteran, having served in the
United States Army overseas in the
Asiatic Pacific Campaign in Europe
during World War II, having earned
the rank of sergeant. He was an active
member of the Cornelia First Baptist
Church, where he served as deacon
for 46 years. He was retired from Lee
Arrendale State Prison as vocational
instructor with 17 years of service. He
was a life member of the Grant Reeves
V.F.W. Post #7720 in Cornelia.
Survivors include his wife of 63
years, Effie Clark Parham, Cornelia;
sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and
Pat Parham, Cornelia, Larry and Janet
Parham, Mt. Airy; sister-in-law, Frances
Parham, Monroe; grandchildren, Alice
and Grant Gunter, Cornelia, Brittany
Parham, Mt. Airy.
Mr. Parham was preceded in death
by a brother, Norman Parham.
Funeral services were held Tuesday,
May 20, at the Cornelia First Baptist
Church with the Revs. David Turner
and Greg Walton officiating. Burial
was in Yonah Memorial Gardens.

Peyton Erwin
Peyton Lee Erwin, infant son
of Joseph and Crystal Erwin of
Gainesville, died Sunday, May 18,
2008, following a brief illness.
He was born in Hall County on
April 27, 2008.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Merrifield, Alto;
paternal grandparents, Randall and

'Pete' Jenkins
Ernest “Pete” Jenkins, 86, of
Gainesville, died Wednesday, May 14,
2008, at Northeast Georgia Medical
Center in Gainesville, following a
brief illness.
He was born in the New Holland
Community and was the son of the
Tucker Jenkins. He was
retired from Milliken
and was a member of
Riverbend Baptist Church. He was
currently a bailiff for the Hall County
Superior Court and was a veteran,
having served in the United States
Army during World War II. He was
inducted into the Hall of Fame for
Old Timers and a member of the Hall
County Mill League. Mr. Jenkins was
preceded in death by brothers, Hoyt
Jenkins, Jack Jenkins, Ray Jenkins and
Charles Jenkins; sisters, Estelle Webb
and Imogene Brown.
Survivors include his loving wife
of 61 years, Margaret Adams Jenkins,
Gainesville; daughters and sons-in-
law, Ann and Jim Aulick, Buffalo,
Minn., Robin and John Hahn, Lula;
and several nieces, nephews, great-
nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday,
May 17, in the chapel of Memorial
Park Funeral Home with the Revs.

Tommye Nicholas
Tommye J. Nicholas, 78, of Baldwin,
died Monday, May 19, 2008, at a pri
vate care facility.
She was born on October 30, 1929,
in Fulton County, the daughter of the
late Thomas Elmer and Mary Anna
Akin Reeves. She was a member of the
Mableton First Christian Church and
was retired from Benefits and Service
Records Company with 15 years of
service.
Survivors include her husband of
57 years, William Nicholas, Baldwin;
sons, Marvin Wayne “Butch” Nicholas,
Knoxville, Tenn., Edward Thomas
“Bubba” Nicholas, Baldwin; and two
grandchildren.
No services are scheduled at this
time.

Thomas Souther
Thomas Watson Souther, 90, of New
Horizons Nursing Home, Gainesville,
died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, follow
ing an extended illness.
He was born in Union County, the
son of the late Rev. Jasper Gilliam
Souther and Stella Ruth Watkins
Souther. He was retired from Chicopee
and was preceded in death by his wife,
Willie Mae McIntyre Souther; broth
ers, Aaron, Isaiah, Oliver, Arvil and
John Souther; sisters, Ulmer Dyer,
Willie Turpin and Frankie Cowart.
He was a member of Pilgrim Baptist
Church in Gainesville and was also a
charter member of East Hall Baptist
Church.
Survivors include daughters and
sons-in-law, Carolyn and Roger Allen,
Gainesville, Delores Edge, Flowery
Branch, and Frances and Ronnie Spain,
Cleveland; son and daughter-in-law,
Ralph and Lois Souther, Gainesville;
eight grandchildren; five great-grand
children; sister, Mary Hart, Gainesville;
brothers, Paul Souther, Cleveland, and
L.D. Souther, Gainesville; and a host
of family and friends.

May 17, in the chapel of Memorial
Park Funeral Home with the Revs.

Martha Lianne Mason, 40, of
Lavonia, died Thursday, May 15, 2008.
Born in Clarke County, she was
the daughter of father and step
mother, Robert and Rachel Mason of
Covington, and mother, Patty Barnes
Mason, Athens. She worked for Home
Depot as an inventory clerk.
Survivors include daughters, Amber
Mize, Jordon Mize and Hayley Mize,
all of Lavonia; brother, Ricky Mason,
Covington; sisters, Debbie Williams,
Winder, Bonnie Mason, Athens, and
Elizabeth Mason, Covington; aunts
and uncle, Martha Forney, Oxford,
and John and Janice Barnes.

James Ogletree
James Robert Ogletree, 57, of
Gainesville, died Friday, May 16, 2008,
following a sudden illness.
Born in Jackson County, he was the
son of Billie N. Ogletree and step
father, Dan Stringer, of Homestead,
Fla., and the late Bennie Ogletree.
He was a truck driver. Mr. Ogletree
was preceded in death by a brother,
Bennie “Skipper” Ogletree Jr.; sister,
Jo Ann Ingram; and nephew, Chad
Whirlow.
Survivors include his wife, Patti
Ogletree, Gainesville; daughters and
son-in-law, Melissa and Kevin Savage
and Crystal Little, all of Lula; sis
ter and brother-in-law, Kay and John
Whirlow, Flowery Branch; brother and
sister-in-law, William “Bill” and Jane
Ogletree, Clermont; grandchildren,
Hayden, Logan and Karsyn Savage,
Caleb and Haley Little; and many
nieces and nephews.

May 19, in the Memorial Park Chapel
with the Revs. William Baker and
Ernest Fuller officiating. Burial was in
Center Grove Baptist cemetery.

Margaret Mathis
Margaret Mathis, 82, of Winder, died
Monday, May 19, 2008.
She was born in Barrow County, the
daughter of the late Hiram S. and Stella
Edwards McDaniel. Her first job was
at Carwood Manufacturing Company
and she retired from Cherokee after
many years. She was a member of
Dove Creek Holiness Church. Mrs.
Mathis was preceded in death by her
husband, Jerdine L. Mathis.
Survivors include a son and daugh
ter-in-law, Bobby L. and Stacey Mathis,
Baldwin; five grandchildren; 11 great
grandchildren; and two great-great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday, May 21, at Smith Memory
Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Moore
officiating. Burial was at Barrow
Memorial Gardens.
