Driving north up Hwy. 82,
just past the Oconee River,
is a little marker on the left-
hand side of the road that
reads “Hurricane Grove Me
morial.” Behind that sign is
a story that needs to be re
told. It is the location of the
first Presbyterian Settlement
in Jackson County, which
was then Franklin County,
Ga.
In 1784, James Montgom
ery left South Carolina with
his payment from serving
in the Revolution. His first
stop, now Sparta, Ga., is
where he briefly waited for
the Shoulderbone treaties
to be signed. These trea
ties allowed the white man
to settle Indian Territory.
James’s son, Hugh Fawson
Montgomery, had the job to
survey the lines according to
the treaties. Hugh surveyed
all the way to Tennessee, but
James Montgomery entered
with Jared Cunningham and
started a settlement in Hur
ricane Shoals.
Records show there were
42 people in this initial group
of settlers. They brought
with them the Scotch-Irish
Presbyterian religion and
traditions. Shortly after the
Olney Presbyterian Church
was formed, where the Hur
ricane Grove Memorial sign
is today. The Olney Presby
terian Church was named
Olney because this group of
Presbyterians sang “Olney
Hymns.”
Records show that Olney
Church met once a month
and the church funds were
used to finance missionary
efforts to convert the Indi
ans to the Christian faith. By
1828, the Olney Presbyte
rian Church would be spon
sored by the Thyatira Pres
byterian Church of Rowan
County, N.C. This would
change the church name to
Olney-Thyatira Presbyterian
Church. The church moved
to a second location and
then a third. Today the third
location can be seen east of
Jefferson on Hwy. 15.
After the Olney Church
name change and move, the
original church site was tak
en over by what records call
the “Maysville Church.” As
time passed the burial
grounds were taken over
by Hurricane Grove Baptist
Church.
Visiting Hurricane Grove
Memorial graveyard you will
see the first row of graves
which date back to the late
1700s, on the northern side.
There are several DAR
markers that were put into
place around one hundred
years ago. DAR markers tell
who is buried in the grave,
but all of the ones used have
faded and can’t be read.
Going past the pio
neer graves, you will
find graves that date back
to the 1800s. Then the fab
ricated tombstones begin to
show the names clearly.
This pioneer graveyard
that is still in use has not
been forgotten, but neglect
ed. Remnants of where two
fences were placed around
it can be seen. There is a
black hole in the middle of it
where a lightning bolt hit a
grave. A small piggy bank
dating from the early 1900s
can be found on the comer
that was next to the original
Olney Presbyterian Church.
Fate state archivist, Gina
Bell, documented the Ol
ney Church/graveyard in
the mid 1900s. Reverend
Groves Harrison Cartledge
documented it again in 1960
in “Historical Sketches of
Presbyterian Churches and
Early Settlers in Northeast
Georgia.” Many other re
cords are available.
