Cottou—ll Proaprcta, Ac.
Mobile. April 20, 1853. —1 take pleasure,
while 1 wish to ask of you a favor, of presenting ;
to you for the ecVuinns of your valuable paper,
views entertained by mo i relation to Cotton, I
its prospects, and Cotton Planter's interest, Ac. j
1 will first state the favor of which 1 ask of
you. It is that you will obtain from your j
jog ware-house keepors in yours and the city of
Hamburg, their statistics of Cotton, weekly, and
publish them in your paper. We wish to seo j
what yourstocks and receipts weekly are. This
system is regularly pursued by the papers iu
Columbus, (in., Montgomery, Ala., Memphis,
Tenn., and at oil considerable rooelving poiuts
save yours and Macon. I beg the Macon pa
pers also, will thus favor us. From Columbia,
S. C., we would also be happy to hear weekly,
and it would boos general interest if your nows
collectors would make inquiry from time to time
ns to the crop, compared with the year before,
of different sensible Planters, and your probable j
receipts, the character of seasons, tc., and that J
you would publish thorn.
Lot mo remark here, that I thank you for j
your paragraph respecting the interests of Cot- ;
ton Planters this year, which was extensively I
quoted in all tho other papers, and I thank you
especially for it, for it is a singular fact that 1
Editors of papers published throughout the Cot- j
ton region, who receive their existence from
Cotton Planters, rarely venture to write a word
respecting this important article. Spur them
up. The conclusion of your remarks, however,
1 differ with you respectfully. After stating the
season to be so remarkably late, you conclude
by saying there is time enough, yet, however,
w ith good season, to make a crop. My objec
tion to 4 this remark is this : that allowing it is in
tho power of an All-wise Being to produce such
seasons as ho may choose; to arrive at that |
which is to come, wo must look to that which ,
corresponded with it in its features of years I
gone by, examining the g n *ral results careful
ly, and we nay pretty well rely on it that like
causes will produce like results. And upon this
basis wo may make some calculation which ap- i
proximatos results.
1 will then say, if you will turn back, to tho
springs when general planting is so late as this,
you will see that tho production has been below
an average, ami in many instances very short.
In old times, for instance, Planters uniform- j
ly held back their planting till in April, tbit
they should save their seed, and the trouble of re- \
planttng. But look to tho quantity thus rais
ed to the hand then, as a general thing, and !
look at the quantity we now get from a hand j
when wo make a full crop, then from 1$ to 2 |
bales to tho hand answered, while now wc look
f->r from Ito 0 bales, atleust. 1 speak of Geor
gia planting. This year the moat energetic j
planters ns well as the slothful, have been pre
vented from planting early. They aro barely
done planting now in the uplands, and the hot- j
toms, of course, are yet to plant. If, then, it is j
decided that our expectations should bo based j
upon w hat resulted from a like state of things 1
in former years, the next crop must, undoubt
edly be short. Iu tho spring of 1841), for in
stance, on tho night of tho 1 4th of April there j
was a killing frost. I remember 1 was in New
Orleans not long after, and the inquiry was ur
gently made of mo as to my opinion of tho ef
fect it would have on tho extent of the crop.
My mind was made up, and I told them, em
phatically, that a crop of 1,500,000 bales was as
much as could be looked for, though if tho sen
son should he very propitious, it migh go to 2.
000,000. Tho season wont off warm and pro
pitious, and tho crop reached 2,1)1)0,000 bales.
In April, Middling Cottons were worth 5J a
•>l cents, and the crop coming to market reach
*d the highest figure, ever before known, say i
2.729,000; but after tlio frost Cotton advanced 1
to 6 cents, then 6j a 0]; in.luuo to 7 cents, and
by July wont to 10 cents, and ruled at that for ‘
the remainder of that season, the next crop
bringing 10, 11, 12 and 13 cent;:. But let me i
rot be too fast. There was a frost ou tho 14th !
April, 1841). Lot us compare that season with
this. That season had been cold, but tho lands
were in good tilth, had been bedded up early, i
Ac., ami a largo portion of the crop was in the j
ground, nn l not up. What was up was cut down
and had to be r< planted, but that which was in
the ground not up, was merely kept back, ami I
as the weather moderated came up and grew off,
having after that excellent seasons. My infor
mation is, that tho prospect of the crop now is
worse than it was in 1811), as the crop was re- 1
planted by this time, the lands were in a better j
condition than they now are, while, besides the j
lands not beirfg now so fully prepared, planting ,
is now entirely over with.
1 have an opinion respecting what this crop
may go to, and I am willing to express it. It
is this, that wo must have an excellent succcs- 1
sion of seasons to como near an average of the -
past five years. These crops were for
1848. 1849. I 1851. 1852,
2.725,(mh) s.o'jfl.ooo 2,355.0u0 3.0ir..ti00 3.100,000
equal to 13,294,000, and this divided by five is 1
2,659,000. Then 2,659,000 would be an aver- j
age of tho five years, assuming the crop of 1852 j
may reach 3,100,000 bale-, which I doubt. Now
T consider it very problematical if the coining i
crop eau exceed 2,300,000 to 2,400,000 bales, j
In 1846, (Sept. 20th, about) after surveying the |
devastations of the worms. I wrote my friend in !
New York, the crop would not go over 1.700,000 i
bales, ami of bales of equal w eight of those of
tho year before, it fell below 1.700,000, though I
as the bales were lighter,they numbered 1,77 s ,-
000.
In presenting my recollections and opinions
thus, 1 do so. fully sensible of the exceeding dif
ficulty so fur in advance to foretell actual re
sults, but I think candid di cussions in relation
to matters of this sort, may call such attention
to it, as will prevent excessive and recklessly
heavy estimates, which could do no party good, i
and should buyers who have dealt with us, cal- j
culating on profit.*, bo disappointed, why our
next crop would be to some extent neglected by !
them. I have in my mind tho reckless estimates
made last summer and industriously circulated
in iEurope, that the crop of thnt year would
reach 3,500,600 to 4,000,000 bales. Had it been
positively known at (tie commencement of this
season that the crop would ho no greater than it
will prove, the range of prices, I think, would
have been higher.
What prices are to be next year, I regard
pretty well defined by tho enormous c->:i ump
Cion going on, tho euperabumluuce of money,
and all tho causes concurring to favor extreme ,
prices.
Our roceiptsnre fulling off hero very rapidly.
The oxecss of 100,006 hales on Ist March over ;
tho receipts to the corresponding period last
year, is reduced to-day to 2,200 hales, and next
Friday night willshowadecrea.se. Tho crop is
all in every where.
