The IT. S. M. Steamship State of Georgia,

exchanged signals with the steamship Osprey ;
from Charleston for Philadelphia.
We are indebted to Purser Jones for Philadel

Fatal Occurrence.
Seven negroes, owned by Mr. Jambs Potter,
attempted to cross the river last night to their
quarters, during tbo prevalence of the thunder
storm which sat in about dusk. Thoir boat wus
struck by a squall, and capsized ; wo regret to
learn, that fivo of the negroes were drowned.
A friend writes us that the scene consequent
upon the accident was truly melancholy, and
brought togethor a large number of persons from
the neighboring plantations.
The U. S. M. steamship Florida, Capt.
WooDUULL, sailed this morning for New York.
She has on board 203 passengers und a valua

The Washington Union intimates that
there is truth in tbo report of an existing diffi

tho Sandwich Islands. Tho full facts of the
case are known to the Government.
Tho Union also intimates that in caso of a
uifficulty, it would be the obvious duty of the
U. States to interfere, and protect the King of
the Islands.

Montreal, May 10. The steamer Genoa, tlm

JP& Col. Hopkins Ilolsey, for many years the
oditor of tho Southern Banner, tho greatest
Union paper in tho country, has sold out his

Mr. John A. Reynolds has beoomo associ.it and ,

j£-£f**Tho wheat crops this year in Virginia
fchow plainly tho efficacy of guano. Sumo old
lands that havo been rejuvenated by this process,
are turning out a splendid yield. Guano ought
to be cheapened, so that all tho poor lands in
tho older sections of tho Union could he re

jXQ-Rcceiit excavations at Panama have
brought to light a number of copper coins, issued 1
in Romo sorno 1 GOO years ago. They are in

buried them at Panama? will be an interesting

Hartford Courant, in an nrtielo rel
ative to tho lato Norwalk Disaster makes tho
following statement:
Tho president of ono of tho roads running into
Bridgeport informed a g.ntlcman of this city,
recently that ho had within a short time placed
the signals to indicate that a draw was open,
(when it was not.) for tho purpose of testing the
engineer. Not tho least attention was paid to ,
the signals, and had tho draw in reality been 1
open, an accidental serious in its consequences j
us the present one, might have been tho result.
In this instunco tho engineer was promptly dis
charged, but wo doubt whether measun < were
taken to guard other road* again*! employing ho

Wo havo a thorough detestation of tho eepion
age and surveillance, which form tliochief element
in French tactics, and French polity, both so
ciul and political, and through whose means, so
much is effected; but wo must say that the ex
ample cited above, is worth imitating. It is an
easy matter for Railroad Companies to test the ,
trustiness of their employees, and whorever the
result of the trial is adverse to the subject of it.
his prompt dismissal should follow. An eng'-

Undo Sam gave an order in January last, for
n model locomotive, tender, and paso nger car,
embraeing till the latest improvements, and con
veniences, to be made by Norris A Sov of Phil
adelphia, and forwarded to the Emperor of Ja
pan. The work has been finished, and the gift
will soon bo on its way to tho Emperor. Wheth- !
er that worthy will succumb to the power of
steam, remains to be seen; but from all ac
counts wo think it will be a difficult matter to 1
prevail on him to accept the gift. •• Timm />-
naos” has been a favorite sentiment in Japan
for many centuries, and pervades every line of
the Emperor’s late reply to tho overtures made
him, through Holland. The Philadelphia l.< and
ger lifts tho following account of the tnodol:
The Model will be accompanied by Mr.
charles Montgomery, a practical engineer, who 1
has been delegated to explain to the Jupuncsc
the power of steam as applied to locomotives, and
tho grout revolution brought about by means of
this agency throughout this and other countries ,
wherein it has been introduced. Tho locomo
tive is complete in every particular, us also the
tender and passenger car. The capacity of tho !
locomotive is estimated at nine tons : tin* tender
is four feet long, two and a half feet wide, un i
two feet ten inches high. It is constructed of
rosewood, and finished in tho most exquisite
manner, with revolving seats, covered with
crimson. Every other feature about the car i
in keeping with tho best taste and judgment. A
railway track will also bo sunt to Japan with
tho locomotive and its appendages.”
Another Great Project.
It is now a certain and ascertained fact that
Mobile will immediately build a railroad to
Pascagoula. Thoy whose great interests re

it, have received upon it, and with those great j

Tho Selma (Ala.) sentinel of Jho 7th inst., !
eavs, the train of Thursday evening, came
down with the freight cars loaded with spar*,
which are destined for France. Cupt. George
has a largo contract with tho French Govern
ment to furnish a certain number of spars, and
for the last two or three months has been en
gaged in Shelby and Bibb counties, getting
them out. Those brought on tho cars, range
from 60 to 86 loot in length, 18 to 30 inches iu
diameter, weighing from four to six tons.
This is another proof of tho groat advantage
resulting from Railroads. We are truly glad to

1 the wants and necessities of other countries.

There were in attendance near two thousand

Ac ording t > tho London Quarterly, the

of Wellington, while Capt. Kcllet is probably
safely anchored in Winter Harbor, tho old quar

an attendant steamer, white tho North Star,
within reach, no doubt, ot parties from either
vessel, remains in Franklin’s harborage at
liceehy Island. On the Pacific side, tho Plo

Harrow. Wo have no intelligence of McClure,
since, under a press of can vas, he stood for the
back ice off Icy Cape, in August 1830: nor
from Collinsi n since he passed Behring's
Straits, in July of tho following year. Our
Consul nt Panama indeed writes that Collinson
had been spoken by some whalers but without
details; we know not what credit is to bo attach
ed to the report; McClure supposed he should be
able to reach England by way of Barrow’s
Straits, some time in this year, either ly navi
gating his vessel through the unknown sob
which stretches north of tho American conti

Melville Island or some point nearer home.
