Tlie Colored Race.
The following estimate of the numbers and
localities of the colored population is given iu
tho report of tho British and Foreign Anti-sla
very Society :
United States, 305,000
Brazil, 4,050,000
Spanish Colonies, 1,470,000
South American Republics, 1,130,000
British Colonies, 750.000
Hayti, 850,000
French Colonies, 270,000
Dutch Colonies, 50,000
Danish Colonies, 45,000
Mexioo, 70,000
Canada, 35.000
Total, 12,370,000
Prance and the Sandwich Islands.
The French demands on tho Government of
the Sandwich Islands are :
1. That the duty on brandies shall be reduced
from $5 to $1 50 per gallon.
2. That tho prohibition on tho introduction of
.spirituous liquors bywhaleship shall not be on
forced against French whalers.
3. That a board of superintendence be appoin
ted for each religion ; that Catholic schools bo
under the solo control of Catholic inspectors;
aud that tho fund arising from tho school tax
ho proportionally divided between Catholics aud
Protestants.
These claims are based upon tho treaty of 18-
4G, of which the second article guarantees to
French residents in the island tho same rights
and privileges which are now, or which hereaf
ter may be, granted to tho subjects of tho most
favored nation. Article six declares that French
productions shall not bo prohibited or subjected
to a duty greater than fivo percent ad valorem
—except in the case of wines, brandies and
spirituous liquors, which may be subjected to
any equitable duty which tho government of
the Islands may see fit to impose—on condition
that this duty shall never bo sufficiently high to
become an absolute prohibition to the importa
tion of tho said articles. Y. Eve. Post.
Second Marriage.
It is remarked that widows and widowers ;
marry more readily than those who have never ‘
entered matrimony. This is one of tho greatest •
compliments to marriage life that could be bes
towed upon it. Were a man not to marry a
second time, it might bo concluded that his first
wife had given him a disgust to marriage; but,
by taking a second wife, he pays the highest
compliment to tho first, by showing that she
made him so happy as a married man, that ho
wishes to be so a second time.
English Satire on Americans.
There is one thing universally forgotten by
satirical Englishmen, and by sensitive Ameri
cans complaining of satire, and that is the in
tolerance usually felt for minute differences in
manners and customs. When an Englishman
carries his prejudices and his standards to a
foreign country, ho does not expect to see them
flattered and conformed to. He does not quar
rel with tho German, tho Frenchman, tho Itali
an, or the Spaniard, because their salivary
glands are active, their acquaintance with wa
ter seldom attaining matutinal intimacy, and
their breath usually bearing a perfume of gar
lic, stronger but not sweeter than the rose; the
men aro “ foreigners,’’ and all is said! Yet
when the Englishman goes to America, ho meets
with a race unmistakably his own, speaking his
own language, worshipping his own classics,
uttering his own sentiments, and in all essenti
als comporting itself as ho and liis English
friends comport themselves; then he becomes
sensitive to minute differences, just as ho would
wero he to meet with them in his own circlo at
homo. The Frenchman and German may spit
as foreigners ; tho American who spits cannot
be pardoned.
It is always so. Tho Methodist hates the mi
nuter Methodist more than ho hates a Bishop.
The Protestant is tnoro furious with a Catholic
than with tho Jew. The Derbyito scorns tho
Peelito with a deadlier scorn than ho has for
tho Cobdenite. And this feeling was admira
bly satirized by Thackeray, in passing down tho
Strand one day with a friend, who pointed to
an oyster-shop, wherein two barrels side by side
severally boro tho announcements Bd. a dozen
and 9d. a dozen. “ llow they must hate each
other,” said tho sardonic wit, which of course
they did. —London Lender.
Perfumes.
Professor Playfair, in a late lecture before
the Society of Arts stated that some of tho most
delicate perfumes exhibited at the Crystal Pal
ace were not, as formerly, distilled from flowers,
but generally from the most disgusting sub
stancos. A peculiarly foetid oil is formed in
making brandy and whiskey. The oil of ap
ples is made from tho same oil by distillation
with sulphuric acid, and tho acetate of Potash,
gives the oil of pears. Tho oil ofnpplos is made
from tho same oil by distillation with sulphu
ric acid and bichromato of potash. Tho oil of
pine apple is obtained from a product of tho ac
tion of putrid cheese on sugar, or by making a
soap with butter, and distilling it with alco
hal and sulphuric acid, and is now largely used
in England in the making of pine applo ale.
Oil of grape and of cognac, used to impart the
flavor of Fronch cognac to British brandy, is
little less than fusel oil. Tho artificial oil of
bitter almonds, now so largely employed in per
fuming soap and flavoring confectionary, is
prepared by the action of vitriolic acid on tho
foetid oils of gas tar. Many a fair forehead is
damped with cau do millefleur (water of a thou
sand flowers) without knowing that its essen
tial ingredient is derived from tho drainage of
cow-houses.
Vegetable Wax. ;
At a late regular mooting of tho Farraors’
Club of New York, Judge Scott read a report on
the wax and tallow plant. The myrtle tallow,
or candloberry, has long been known in Ameri
ca, and occasionally collected for medicine pur
poses, but never used as candles to take the
place of spermaceti or tallow. If the subject
was properly taken up, the writer had little
doubt but vegetable wax would grow into a
manufacture of national importance. The plans,
is from three to oight feet high. It yields a
supply of 2 j percent, of wax. The wax is ob
tained by boiling the berries in water until tho
wux*float3; it is then skimmed off. A specimen
of the candle was exhibited.
