/H®*We havo very conflicting accounts of j
tho locture last evening on the Caloric Engine.
By some wo arc told tbt it was very plausible,
but unsatisfactory—by others that its most
prominent feature, was an attempt to discredit
tho Scientific American, an able journal which j
lias never expressed a favorable opinion of tho J
new motor—and by others again we hear, that
the lecture was highly satisfactory, convincing,
and in short, a triumphant demonstration of tho i
value, and ultimate success of hot air as a motor. I
As wo weje prevented from hearing Prof Rainey
wo can give no opinion of our own as to his ,
success. So far as we have been able to learn
he made no converts among disbelievers, neither
unsettled the faith of tlioso who already believ- I
cd. We must therefore still look to Mr. Ericsson |
himself for a solution of the problem.

?ts’*A western editor has hit upon u plan by
which “outrage* upon the American Flag” are
in the future t<> be avoided, without a resort to
blood-sho 1. Ho advises tho captains of vessels |
not to carry any flag, and then no outrage can 1
he perpetrated up .i that precious emblem of
libe rt y.— Ex th u mje.
That is a capital idea. If there is any- j
thing which we love, respect, and venerate, it J
is the American Flag ; and if theYeie anything j
that we hate, detest, and abominate, it is thees- ;
forts of Red-republican editors—at whom tho |

thnn about nothing, and provoke a quarrel with !
all the world and the “re*t of mankiud,” on the ;
most frivqlous occasion, and for the rhallowest <
of pretexts. If wo are to believe these braggart j
quills, the American Flag is “outraged,” on an j
average, nt least once a week : and if the nation [
were to heed their silly counsels, we sbould soon j
be involved in usele.-s wars, whose issue whether |
for or against us, could but cover us with die- j
I grace.
We hare known some of these “ outrage ” men, I
to bristle up one day Idee male Bantams, at j
some alleged indignity offered tho stars and
stripes, and tho next, seen their own flags crawl j
down the pole, with the rapidity of a paper kite ’
in a thunder shower. W * have wondered how j
it was, that they were so thin-skinned about the J
nation's flag, and character, and whenthei r
own colors and their own character were nt |
stake, they could exclaim with Mr. Toots, in |
Bombay and Son, “it of no conto/uencc.” Most !
wonderful of all!—We have known theso edi
torial Hotspurs, to have dozens of disciples *
clinging with implicit faith to their skirts, fully j
satisfied with their leaders and firmly persuad- j
ed that in their hands, outrage dare not ap
proach tlie American Flag. This is a strange i
world—there may bo othors more strange, but |
our planet is worthy of Rarnum. Shades of 76 ! I
you have left posterity a rich legacy. But for |
platitudes on tho American Flag, and Fourth of
July how many pons would be bankrupt.

SAVANNAH JOURNAL WEDNESDAY. MAY ;5, 1853
The Paris correspondent of the N. V.
Times, gives the following account of anew
species of locomotion :
“The Frente says that it has scon upon the
Cli a mp3 Elysecs a carriage containing two per*
j Mins proceed for twenty minutes, tho full speed
] of ahorse, by means of a cylinder of comprcss
j . and air, of so small a volume that you might put
|it iu your pocket. The inventor thinks ho has
j obtained a practical plan of utilitizing compress
ed air, and has discovered a moans of compross
i ing it at a nearly nominal cost. A paper on the
subject has boen read to tho Academy of Sci
, enecs. M. Julienne proposes to adopt tho prin
j oiple to carriages and street vehicles merely, to
J which it may bo applied with immense eeono
imy and perfect safety. With a small cylinder a
! party of two or three may take an airing at tho
| Buis do Boulogne nt any rate of speed from a
j walk to a gallop. An nfternoon’s ride will cost
j perhaps a franc. You will have no hay or oat
bill to pay, nor any coachman to reiuenibor, for
you will do your own steering. Depots of cylin
, dors will bo established in all parts of Paris; you
I willpurchaso one or two, and when exhausted
‘of nir, you will send them to bo renewed. A
very slight alteration in the present style of
1 carriages is required to adapt the new principle
jto them. It would not be expensive oven to
’ build new ones, owing to their simplicity. M.
i Julienne does not make public tho moans by
! which he concentrates the air, and it will bo safo
; to wait till we can soe, before we believe. Im-
I raense sums have been expended in experi
j ments upon tho compression of uir, during tho
I last twenty years, but no practicable results havo
| been obtained.”
I This leaves hotair “in tho vocative.” For
j our part, wo havo no faith as yet, either in hot
I nir or compressed air, as motive powers. Our
old friend steam, continues to occupy tho first
place in our affections, and even ns a basis for
j speculation, (pecuniary wo mean)-wo don’t
* doubt but ’tis as good as caloric.
Ingenious.
A tavern keeper in Vienna lately reaped a
great harvest by announcing that on a certain
i day ho would sell at rotail a tun of herring, in it
| one containing a gold ducat, tho latter tube the
* property of him who might get tho herring. The
j sale of the herrings, and tho price of tho liquor
j drank in consequence of eating them, brought
him an enormous profit.—That is a very fair
sample of ingenuity.— Ex.

Prevention of Timber from Decay.
H. 1\ Burt recently read a paper beforo the
Institution of Civil Engineers in England, on
1 tlie different species of homo and foreign grown

j dencies to decay. Ho urges tho necessity of
i some efficacious, and yot moderately cheap sys

I demand, for railway and other engineering
I works, not only in Europe, but even in the East
j Indies. It is seated that in Southern Asia the
i woods that would resist tho climate and the
| ravages of the white ant, were only to bo found
| at such a distance inland that tho expense of
carriage, in a country devoid of good means of
communication, rendered it more economical to
buy fir timber in the north of Europe, convert it
to the proper dimensions, and saturate it with
creosote or oil of coal tar in England, and then
convey it by sea tojlndia, for the use of the rail
way now in course of construction in that coun
try.
The rapid multiplication of railroads in the
United States, and the enormous consumption
| of timber for the sub sills, ties and bridges,
| would seem to suggest tho like inquiries in re
gard to the better preservation of the timber
: used by our own railroads.

The Supreme Court at East Cambridge, Mass., j
lias made an important decision, in tho case of ‘
Casey, on trial for tho murder of Mr j. Taylor. I
Mrs. Taylor survived the murderous attack fur !
a few days, yet she was unable, though appa- !
rently conscious of her situation to articulate,’
and in that emergency she was asked to squeezo i
the hands of those present if a person namod j
was the uue who attacked her, and there was an ,
instantaneous squeeze of tho hand; also that
when other questions were asked, of which tho I
questioners knew she had no knowledge, such 1

In one instance, as if .she summoned allhcrenor
gies for the purpose, she answered yes, when j
asked if Casey was the man, and never spoke
afterwards.
The Counsel for tho defence argued that it
was dangerous to receive such uncertain evi- ‘
deuce where life was at stake. Mr. Choate in- 1
stanccd the case of the signs of deaf nnd dumb |
persons being received as evidence. Tho Court j
expressed the opiuion that where a person has !
been prevented from testifying orally by injuries
received, signs may be resorted to, provided the ‘
person so testifying is fully aware that ho is iu I
a dying condition, which is deemed equivalent
to the solemnity of an oath. After such tes
timony has been received, it is for tho Court
an 1 Jury to judge of the condition of tho person
at the time, and also of the credibility of tho
statements so made.
! To illustrate its position, the Court said that
* if a dying person had the use of but one finger,
and could point that finger to the words Yes or
.V>, in a manner and under such circumstances
as to lead to the belief that he answered the
questions with a full understanding of their na

Milledgeville Union of yesterday :
“Oar usually quiet city was thrown into a
i high state of excitement on Saturday night last,
i by the attempt of a negro to kill ono ofourciti

1 had seen proper to correct the wife of his negro
t.ian Toby, which act so enraged the negro as to
cause him to attack Mr. Hawkins, which ho did
with a knife, inflicting several wounds, one
upon the fleck, the most dangerous, extending
quite across the neck; but what is surprising,
severing neither artery nor windpipe. Mrs.
Hawkins and her sister Mrs. Ibiilcy, were also
wounded, the latter severely. It is tho opinion
that the ladies were injured in their efforts to
protect Mr. Hawkins, the object of the negro, as
wo learn he admits, being only to kill Mr. 11.,
which he certainly would have done, had not
one of his negroes, a boy named Henry, ussist- ;
ed in disabling him.
Mr. Hawkins had been sick, and wns unable ;
to make such resistance ns ho would have douc
had lie been possessed of his usual strength.
This daring act should be met by condign

HERE IS YOUR REMEDY,
A Most Miraculous Cure of Fad Legs, after A3
Years’ Safe ring.
Extract of a letter from Mr. William Gnlpin. of 70
St. Mary--street, Weymouth, dated 15tli May, 1S51:
To Professor JloUovoag:
Sir: —At the age of eighteen my wife, (who is now
sixty-one) caught a violent cold, which settled in her
legs, and ever since that time they have beon more or
less sore, and greatly inflamed. Her agonies were
destracting, and for months together she was deprived
entirely of rest and sleep. Every remedy that medi
cal men advised was tried, hut without effect; her
health suffered severely, and tho state of her legs was
terrible. I hail often rend your advertisements, and
advised lior to try your Pills and Ointment; and, us a
last resHiiroo, after every oilier remedy had proved
useless, she consented to do so. Khe commenced six
weeks ago, and, strange to relate, is now in good
health. 1 ler legs are painless, without seam or scar,
and her sleep sound and undisturbed. Could you have
witnessed the sufferings of my wife during the last 43
years, and contrast them with her present enjoyment
of health, you would indeed feel delighted iu having
been the means of so greatly alleviating the sufferings
of a fellow creatura.

A Person 70 Years of Age Cured of a Had
Leg. of 30 Years Standing.
Copy of a letter from Mr. Win. Abbs, builder of Gas
Ovens, of ltusheliffe, near Huddersfield, dated May
31st. 1851:
To l*rofessor Hollotvay:
Fir:—l suffered for a perid of thirty years from a
bad leg, the result of two or three different accidents
nt the Gas Works; accompanied by scorbutic symptoms.
1 had recourse to a variety of medical advice, without
deriving any benefit, nnd was even told that the leg
must be amputated; yet. in opposition to that opinion,
your Pills and Ointment have effected a complete cure
in so short a time, that few who hud not witnessed it
would credit the fact. (Signed)
William Amis.
The truth of this statement can be verified by Mr.
W. P. England, Chemist, 13 Market-street., Hudders

A Dreadful Fad Breast Ctired in One Month.
Extract of a letter from Mr. Frederick Turner, of
l’cnshurst, Kent, dated December 13th, 1850:
To Professor J/oUowai/ :
Dkar Sir:—My wife had suffered from Bad Breasts
for more Gian six months, and during the whole peri
od bad the best medical attendance, but all to no use.
Having before healed an awful wound in my own leg
by your unrivalled medicine, I determined again to
use your Pills and Ointment, and therefore gave them
a trial in her case, and fortunate it was I did so: for in
less than a month a perfect cure was effected, nnd the
benefit that various other branches of my family have
derived from their use is really astonishing. T now
strongly recommend them to all my friends.
