Tlic Liverpool Steamers—Cumberland
Coal Trade.
The Baltimore correspondent of the National ;
Intelligencer, in his last letter, says :
“ The line of steamers proposed to bo estab- :
Halted between Baltimore and Liverpool, will !
each register nbout 2,000 tons. They are to
have side wheels, ahrl built in thestrongest pos- i
sible manner, at a coat of about two hundred
ami fifty thousand dollars each. As soon as the i
company is fairly organized, two of them will
bo put under immediate coutraet. The enter
prise meets with decided approbation every
where.
“ It is worthy of notico that anew and im
portant trade has sprung up in connexion with
our Cumberland coal. During tin- past few
months one agency in this city has shipped over
four thousand Emm of it to Havana, where it has
become in decided favor, and meets ready sale.
The probability is that at no distant period it
will take tho place of Liverpooleoal, which to a i
great extent supplied the island. This is a val- !
liable acquisition to our coal trade, and prom
ises to increase very largely.”
Gauge of Railroads.
For tho sake of mutual intercommunication, !
it was certainly to bo desired; that a unity of j
gauge should li ive been adopted by all the rail- .
roads of the United States. The want ofunifor- |
mity is especially inconvenient and expensive I
on through, or intersecting lines, creating delay, .
and increasing labor. What ought to bo the
gauge in order to combine the greatest utility I
with the greatest safety ?
The tram roads of England leading to the
coal mines were constructed four feet 8A inches
wide, to adapt them to the common wag .ns.
The railroads wlyoh replaced them were made of !
that width, and new railroads followed the same j
model; and thus the English railroads came to
be four feet B.J inches—the gauge of our own l
first roads, because we need at tho beginning j
the English locomotive. This, after the ex- i
periinents of other dimensions, Mr. Broadhead, i
••rtgineer upon the Mihvuukio and Mississippi I
■Railroad, Wisconsin, deems preferable to all :
others; at least, that it ought not to be exchang- |
ed for any other, after it has been once adopt- j
ed.
The Great Western Railway, England, has a 1
gauge of seven feet, which is the brand gage.
Since then, gauges of 4 feet SA inches, 4 feet 10
inches (Uhio gauge) /> feet, (that of Augusta
and Charleston Railroad,) j feed fi inches,
(gauge of Canada roads,) and 0 feet, (that of
Erie road).
Mr. Brodhcad enters upon a detailed exami
nation and citation of opinions, as to the di
mensions of the best gauge on tho whole, and
then adds:
1 have now shown that the broad gauge is
attended with an additional expense in tho first 1
construction of the road, and in the annual ex- j
ponse of operating i, that the passenger and
freight cars lpuv in use .upon it are not more j
than 3 or 4 inches wider than those used on :
the narrow gauge, and that tho same weight of j
freight and the same number of passengers are
carried in the ears upon each.
The different Railroad Companies having tho
Harrow gauge, have increased the width of their |
passenger cars as fast as the bridges and other
structures have been removed, and others of
greater dimensions put in their places; so that,
so far ns the comfort of passengers is concerned,
it is about as well provided for on tho narrow
gauge, and will bo equally so as soon as the
structures will admit of it.
To change the gauge for tho slight advantage
which may be claimed for tho broad gauge, he 1
thinks too clearly objeetiouable to boar an ar- ;
gument.
The simple fact that tho Hudson River Rail
road was built with a gauge of 4 i't.*BA in., after j
the question of the gauge had been thoroughly !
investigated in this country, and in England,
should settle tho question, so fur, at least, as a
new country is concerned, having 1 ft. 8 in. lur j
the ruling gauge.
That road was designed for great speed , on
which its final success depends; and issusituat
ed, not having any roads coming into it, and j
never can have, that a break of gauge would ;
have been as little objectionable here as any
where; and was commenced by Mr. Jervis, after ,
lie had returned from Europe, whero lie had
bad a full opportunity to look in to the subject,
and notwithstanding adopted the narrow gauge.
Tho Illinois Ceutrul Railroad, too, which is
in the hands of the most intelligent, enterprising
and opulent men in the country, have adopted
the 1 ft. Si in. guage.
From the opinions Mr. Broadhead introduces
of engineers and others, it would seem, that tho
broad gauge is fit only for profitable running
on straight lines, if at all; the best and most ap
proved track being from a to 5£ feet under all
circumstances; some place it under 5 feet. But
it is the general opinion, that it is unadvisablo
to change tho gauge, which has already been
fixed at 4 ft. 84, to any other.
.
The Cricket in the Wall.
Hark! ’Tis the small voice of tho cricket in
the crevices of tho wall. How cheerful is his
little song. AY’hat is tho subject of his lay? Is j
he chanting melody in the oar of his lady love,
or is he pouring out his soul in an evening hymn? I
Is ho singing tho praise of some mighty insect 1
warrior, or landing tho name of one who gath- 1
ered wisdom beyond that of his fellows ? Have
insects their heroes, their tyrants, their poets, j
and their orator# ? Who cau tell ?
But why is it that all living things have glad
voices given them? Why is it, that when tho i
sun has gone down and the hum of business is j
still—when man has withdrawn from tho cares
and bustle of tho day, and the winds have re
tired to their caves, that the voice of the insect !
tribes, low and solemn, comes abroad upon the
air? Why docs not silence come down with the
curtain of night, and brood with tho darkness
over us ? Is it that wo may not forget tho
great teachings of nature. The heavens may
bo darkened by clouds, the stars may not look
out to remind us, the face of tho tnoon may be
veiled, and tho sound of tho winds hushed, but
the voice of the insect world tells us that life,
beauty, joy aud happiness, are still rife in the
works of God. We remember the cricket that
chirped in tho corner when we sat by our fath
er’s fireside. Ilis voice was cheerful, and it
was a pleasant thing to listen to his happy song.
Father, mother, brothers, sisters, were beside
us then, and w e talked of the little warbler as a
t iing that we all loved. Rut thocorner an 1 the
cricket, and the home of our childhood, are all
gone—swept by time into the re turn less abyss
of the past. And those who listened with us,
where are they? Father, mother, brothers, sis
ters, where are they ?
•• They are scattered and parted by mountain and
wave,
| And some are in the cold silent womb of the grave.”
J Sad are the memories that the song of the
cricket brings lo our heart. U tells of happy
days, now gone forever ; of merry hours that
have passed away. It brings clustering around I
( us the furrowed brow sos the living, and the
paK* still laces of the dead. —Albany Tlcyuttr.
