SUM DAY READING.
A Word to Kittle Girls.
Who is lovely? It is tho girl who drops
sweet words, kind remarks, and pleasant smiles,
us she passes along. Who has a kind word for
every boy or girl she meets in trouble, and a
kind hand to help her companions out of dilli
culty. She never scolds, never contends, and i
never teases her mother, nor seeks in any way
to diminish, but always to increase her happi- ;
ness. Would it not please you to pick up a
string of pearls, drops of gold, diamonds, or
procious stones, as you pass along the streets?
Hut these are tho precious stones that can nev
er be lost. Extend a friendly hand to tho
friendless; smile on the sad and dejected;
sympathize with those in trouble; strive every
where to diffuse around you sunshine and
joy. If you do this, you will bo sureto be be
loved.
JR#” Instead of obtaining success by deceiv
ing the public, the consciousness of any man
that ho is practising deception will inevitably
degrade and corrupt his mind, and disqualify
him for the olficientApursuit of lofty enterprises.
It a man deliberately violates his finest sense
of rectitude, he iullicts an irremediable wound
upou his moral n.ituro, and, as it wore, poisons
tho fountain of his energies.
He who is conscious of superior powers, reso
lutely preserves the integrity of his nature, per
severes in the plans which he has udoptod for
beneficial purposes, and despises empiricism.
He alone is truly great who is so by virtue
of intriusio qualities. The adroit employment
of artifice and falsehood may for a time deceive;
but that lino intuition which tests character
and worth with infallible sagacity, will reverse
tho decision of mere opinion, and estimate the
man ns he is.
Overwhelming argument.
Dr. Lathrop, in one of his sermons says:
“If it were true that there is no God, what I
evidonco can the Atheist have that he shall not !
live and bo miserable after death? How came
ho to exist at all? Whatever was the cause of ■
his existence hero, inay bathe cause of his ex
istence hereafter. Or if there is no cause, he
may exist in another state as well as in this. I
And if his corrupt heart and abominable works {
make him so unhappy here that he hadrathor
be annihilated than run the hazard of a future
existence, what hinders but he m ay be unhappy
forever? The man then is a fool who wishes
there was no God, hoping thus to be secure from
future misery, for admitting there is no God,
still ho may exist hereafter as well as here; if
ho does exist, his corruptions and vices may
rendor him miserable eternally, as well as fur
the present.”
The Wreck of A Man.
r But look at an opposite extreme, where an
Opposite history is recorded. What wreck so
shockiug to behold ns the wreck of a dissolute
man, —the vigor of life exhausted, and yot the
first steps in an honorable career not taken; in
himself a lazarhouse of disease; dead, but by a
heathenish custom of society, not buried! llog
tteshave had the initial letter of their title burnt
into the palms of their hands; oven for murder.
Cain was only branded on the forehead; but
over tho whole person of tho dobauoheo or the
inebriate/ signatures of infamy are written.
How nature brands him with stigma and op
probiurn! How she hangs labels all over him
to testify her disgust at his oxisteneo, and to ad
monish others to beware of his example!
How she loosens all his joints, sends tremors
along his muscles, and bends forward his frame
as if to bring him upon all-fours with kindred
brutes, or to degrade him to tho reptiles! How
she disfigures his countenance, ns if intent up
on obliterating all traces of her own image, so
that she may swear sho never made him!—How
she pours rheum over his eyes, sends foul spir
its to inhabit his breath, and shrieks as with a
trumpet, from every pore of his body, “ Behold
a Beast!” Such a man may bo seen in the
stroets of our cities every day; if rich enough,
ho may be found in the saloons, and nt the ta
bles of tho “Upper Ten;” but surely, to every
man of purity and honor, to every man whose
wisdom as well as whose hearth is unblemished,
tho wretch who comes cropped and bleeding
from the pillory, and redolent with its appro- i
priato perfumes, would be a guest or coin pan- !
ion far less offensive and disgusting.— Hon. //.
Mann.
Tke “Unquenchable Fire.
Whatever may bo the precise and litoral I
meaning of this terrific expression, ono thing is
clear, and that is, that the wilful, incorrigible
rejector of tho gospel shall bo fearfully punished
One truth blazes out in lurid letters—written on
those sheets of sulphurous flame—“ The soul
thatsinnoth it shall die.” Ono voice comes forth
from amid tho ascending cloud of smoke, “The
wages ot sin is death.” They that cling to sin,
shall find that sin clings to them and sin makes
hell. They thnt choose death, death shall
choose them, and it shall never die. Whoso
determines to live without God hero, shall be
left to live without him to an endless eterni
ty.
The phrases which tho Scripturos employ to
sot forth the final punishment of the rejectors
of Christ, are appalling and tremendous. They
tell of fire—a firo that is never quenched. They
tell of a worm—a worm that never dies. They
tell of a misery, thnt gnashes its teeth in una
vailing romorse: they tell of wailings, that wail
on forever. Now, is it a violent or improba
ble supposition, that the real punishment of
holl is the simple abandonment of a sinner to
the unrestrained power of the very lusts which j
were bred, and fed, and encouraged in this
life of probation! The “unquenchable firo” I
would then be tho unrestrained tyranny of eve
ry indulged lust, burning ceaselessly in the
soul, like an, angry, glowing furnace. The de
bauched is forcover gnawed by his appetite
for sensual gratifications, and yet never permit
ted to satisfy them. The poor drunkard is pos
sessed with the passion for the poison-bowl,
but finds no dramshop in hell. The cruel man
Is tamed back upon himself, and is left to tor- i
ture bis own soul, as on earth he tortured oth- !
ers. The oppressor of earth becomes, in that
world, his own gaoler, and fastens chains on j
$ own imprisoced soul The covetcui suirit i
i writhes in it own selfishness; and tho man of
sinful ambition forever feels, through his disap
pointed spirit, that ho is fallen, never to arise a
! gain. The temper of man to evil, to profliga
-1 | cy, and to drunkenness, is harrowed with the
| pangs of remorse for his deeds, and those whom
j ho helped to damn are now damning him! The
j skeptic is tormented with the constant sight of
a Jehovah whom ho once denied, and with the
! spectacle of a heaven which ho flung away.
! And amid all these‘unquonehable torments,’ will
i ! come to every sinner tho vision of Calvary, and
ii of a crucified Saviour, and of neglected mercies,
1 und despised invitations to repentance. Not one
| “drop” of consolation will ever cool the self
; consuming soul. The “ great gulf” of self-ex
ile forover shuts out all hope of heaven. “Ye
; knew your duty, but ye did it not,” will blaze
in flashing flame on every wall of that huge
. prison house.
Perhaps all this view of the punishment of
the wilfully impenitent may be imaginary; but
i itcertainly contains nothiug that is arbitrary, or
tyranicaljor unjust on the part of Infinite Love.
The sinner would simply be left to punish him
self. He would cat of tho fruit of his own de
vices- As he sowed in this life, so would he
ronp in another. Ho could lay tho blame no
where but on hisown disobedient, sinful heart.
God is just—thejtinner is self-condememl aid
self-punished.
“Lord God of truth and grace,
Help us that hell to shun,
Lest we be banished from thy face.
And evermore undone! ”
