is generally understood that & part of
the ceremony of welcome to our Columbus
friends, will be a grnud display of fireworks in
Monument Square, upon tho night of their ar
rival. In view of tho number and sizo of tho
trees iu this square, but more especially of the
height and compactness of tho adjacent buil
dings, it seems to us there are other more fa
vorablo localities for tho display, which would
allow a much larger number of spectators to
writnoss it.
We do not wish to meddle with affairs which
properly belong to the Committees, uor do we
presume to dictate to,or advise them. We have
board it suggested however, that if the fireworks
were sent off from a boat, moored in tho mid
die of tho river, the effect of tho display would
be much heightened, and tho wharves would af
ford ample room for all who might dosiro to
witness the spectacle. Wo approve cordially of
the suggestion, hut desire to leave it to tho Com
mittee to bo acted oa or not, ns to them may
seem most desirable or expedient.

tho ship William and Mary :
Wo have to record this evening tho losa of
another emigrant vczacl. The peculiar cir
cumstances attending tho wreck will be found
from the following particulars, of which we have
been kindly permitted to take a copy :
Tho ship “William aud Mary,” of Bath, Maine,
Stinson, master, from Liverpool for N. Orleans,
with a enrgo of rail road iron, pig-iron, dry
goods, and crockery, and odo hundred and
eighty-four emigrant passengers, struck on a
sunken rock (nine feet under water) near the
Great Isaccs, on Tuesday evening, May 3d nt
20 minutes past 8 o'clock. Tho ship was Ashore j
about three hours. Three of the crow who have
arrived nt this port, state, that after the ship
struck, they let go one anchor, parted tho chain, ‘
and then let go the other anchor. Tho boats !
were got out, two of which wero stove in. At <
| 6a. m. the captain, with tho mates nnd a part {
; of the crew, left in one of the boats, and four
l seamen aud a passenger, filling the boat, also |
I loft. Two passengers, in endeavoring to get. |
! into the long-boat, weredrownod. Two seamen, !
, William Ward and Samuel 13. Harris, refused ’
to quit tho ship und abandon tho holploss and {
! unfortunate passongers. Discerning tho land j
about nine miles ahead, they slipped tho chain,
1 and tried to get tbo ship under weigh, in order,
j if possible, to reach the land and run the ship
ashore, but tho passengers could render very
( little assistance in working the ship, and they
I were therefore unable to do so. Had not the
! captain ami crew deserted the ship, it is tho
conviction of the seamen referred to that tho ship
might have been run ashore. Being unable to
: manage her for want of proper assiatauce, she
, drifted to tho N. E., tho passengers exerting
i themselves to the utmost at the pumps. During
the evening rafts wero constructed from spars,
to., but wero not launched until tho following
morning. Early on the morning of tho sth, tho
land was scon about ten miles distant, aud soon
after a schooner hove insight. The colors were
setnt half-mast, when tho schooner immediately
boro down to the ship. The passengers rc
doubled the r exertions at tho pumps, and were j
soon relieved by tho wrecking schooner Oracle, :
Robert Sands, master, coming alongside to their
; assistance. The women and children were first
taken off and landed. Afterwards the schooner
returned and saved the remainder of the pas
sengers. Two men were on tho deck when tho
ship went down (on Friday,) hut saved them
selves by jumping into tho wrecking schooner's
; boat. Whon the ship sunk, tho west end of
Mahania bore about K. N. E., distant 20 miles;
’ Capt. Sands has doubtless been instrumental iu
saving the lives of all on board, and with the
seamen who remained with tho passengers, de
serves tho warm approbation of the humane, I
: and a generous reward from tho British and
American Governments.
The emigrants, are partly German, Dutch, !
English and Irish. They have been taken to ;
tho Western Barracks, where rations have been j
issued from H. M. Commissariat Department, !
and every attention paid to them by the United
j States Consul.

A writer in York Ilorald,M. Galiano,
gives us some idea of tho immense burdens
borne by the people of that garden isle. We
do not know that his statements are reliable,l>ut
presume they are nearly correct. Hero is a list [
of items which go to swell the charges on tho
revenue :
Cuba supports an army of 32,000 men

The Captain General according to this writer, ,
is pretty well paid f.r his services, lie parti
cularizes some of the emoluments :
In the first place, ho gets pay : $50,000 .
Then for table allowance, : 12.000 i
Then for issuing passorts, 21,000 ,
Then for appointments, 32,000 j

But besides this, M. C iliuno says tho Captain
General receives three golden ounces, or ssl,
for the ndtnh'; m of each slavu. uud with auy
luck at all, that functionary can realize from
thissoarc# s3oo,oooper annum. Heals* t
that every Cuban slave own* r pays a tax of
one dollar per month for each slave he owns.
This is tho Queen’s tax. Cuba, after paying ;
the expenses of her own government, sends
every year to Spain ten millions to twelve
millious dollars.
Truly we need not wonder ai symptoms of dis
satisfaction on the part of a people so oppress- ;
ed, norda it n matter of great surprise that r. :
people thus suffering should enlist tho sympa- .
thiesof a fre-* people within some liours’ t sailing
of their ports. Whether that sympathy should
Jl w so free and full as to send forth organized
aid, or to lend to tho incorporation of tho colo
ny with tho United States, is a question which, .
according to ull the indications now, must be
decided ere long.
A writer in the number of DoTlow’s Review
for May, has given us a sensible article on tho j
subject of unnexation or acquisition of Cuba. :
He takes ground in favor of an independent gov
ernment for the island, fre© from the control of i
any power in tho world. We are inclined to :
think that this conservative opinion touching i
Cuba is gaining ground, and that in all proba- j
bility such will be the judgment of the ivhulc
thinking people of the United States. But this :
wise intention maybe frustrated by uny iiu
prudent act of Spain. If the statement bo true ’
that she has promised Santa Anna troops to car- i
ry on any hostile designs against this country, j
or if by any act of hers she irritates the public !
feeling in the present condition of affairs, there (
‘Vjn be no earthly doubt but she must lose what
is termed this “bright jewel” in hercrown. Aud ;
moreover, unless Spain modifies her policy tow
ards the islanders, aud permits them to become
independent, it is altogether likely they will bo- j
come so without her consent.

Self-Acting ltailroud Brake.
In those days of railron l accidents, every in- j
voution that may tend to prevent the destruction
of life deserves notice, and there is one, w hich
has stood tho test of a fair trial on the Reading
Railroad, that ought to be universally adopted.
It is called “Lab aye's Patent Self-Acting Brake,”
j aud is the invention of Mr. J. J. Luhaye, of
Reading. The mode of its operation is very
simple, and as it i? selfacting, it dispenses with
the necessity of having brakemon on a train.
Tho process is as follows:—As soon as an engi
| ncer, seeing danger before him, reverses the
i engine, tho slight check given to the train,
j causes a pressure against the “bumper” of each
! our. Attached to this bumper, and passing
, under the car, is a rod connecting with a lever,
which the moment it feels the pressure, forces a I
brake against the wheels of tho truck, with |
1 such violence as to enable the engineer to stop
the train in an astonishingly short time. On
t the Reading Railroad, where this brake has
been in use for a year and a half, an engineer
i can stop a train going at the rate of thirty miles
, an hour, in a space of from two hundred to two
hundred and fifty feet. It is easily seen that
under these circumstances a collision can very
rarely occur, as it is seldom that au obstacle in
a track cannot be discovered at a distance of at
least five or six hundred feet. Tho operation
of detaching the brake is also quite simple, and
the whole apparatus i ,-uch as to recommend it
to general adoption, especially on railroads
having but a single track, where tho dangers of
collision are much tho greatest. No description,
Without diagram-', can do full justice to the
beuuty and practical value of this invention ;
hut tho very fact that it has been successfully
u. v.d fur a ie.igiii of time on a road doing such
an immense business as tho Reading Railroad,
is sufficient to convince all of its excellence.—

Mr. Porter concludes one of his pamphlets on
tvrial navigation with tho following Might of
prospective fancy:
“It may be anticipated that w ithin a few
months these serial) machines tnny lie seen soar
ing in various directions, and at different ele
vation-, some apparently among or above tho
’ lou ds, and others, like swallows, sailing leisure
ly just above tho surface of the earth. The
; sides of tho most lofty and rugged mountains
and the fertile valleys will bo alike recounoi
tered. Let our gentle readers imagine them
selves to be visiting the pleasant and excellent
literary establishment on the summit of Mount
Holyoke on u sunny morning in the balmy
i mouth of June, and gently descending thence
J towards the verdant plains which border the
meandering Connecticut, and then, titan eleva
lion of only eight or ten feet from tho ground,
sailing moderately over the rich fields of broom
i and grain, and over the flower spangled fields
! of grass waving to the western breeze, and eon
j versing by tho way with the merry farmers, j
as they follow their recreative avocation of
hay making; then ascending w ith accelerated
velocity to the altitude of refreshing tempera
ture, and returning to Now York to dine.
Or suppose yourselves leisurely crashing a
long by the steep and rugged sides of the Rocky
Mountains and laughing at tho astonished
countenance of tho harmless grizzly bear, or
ut tho agility of tho frightened antelope; and
then descending to the extensive prairies to
watch the prancing of the wild horses, or tho
furious rushing of hordes of buffaloes. These
things are indeed but fancies at present, but in
u few months these fancies may become pleas
ant realities in America, while the proud na- !

the soaring enterprise of the independent citi- j

ting dresses, Ac., hailing from the North, we be

ly died in one of tho upper counties, when the
discovery was made that, tho cutter of ladies
garments was a man in disguise—one who had

The Crystal Palace in London covered twen
ty ucres; that of New York covers two acres and

erection; this has already consumed that space
of time, and will not be finished for many weeks

Niagnrn Falls niul Lake Eric.
Professor Silliman, the eminent geologistdis- 1
credits the opinion advanced by some that tho 1
gradual wearing away of tho rocks of Niagara
Falls may possibly result iti draining Lake
Erie. In a recent lecture ho remarked :
“They will uot halt at their present station,!
but retreat slowly aud surely about two miles
further, where they will stop again for an uu
knowu period, and probably forever, since al
this place tho hard limestone will form both
base and top of the falls, and thus stop the rap- !
piil destruction of the rock. Some have thought j
that they would finally reach Lake Erie, and ‘
that then tho lake would be completely drained.
Such an event is impossible. At the point ,
already mentioned tho torrent will gradually
wear away the surface of tho limestone, forming
a rapid, and henceforth Niagara will bo one of I
tho lost wonders of tho world.
