Atmoapheric Telegraph.
Suppose a lino of two feet tube laid from Bos- ‘
ton to New York, it would contain about 1,000,-
OIM) cubic feet of air. Suppose twenty pumps
of ten feet diameter, and teu foot stroke are lo
cated at the Boston end, connected with the
cylinder; these twenty pumps contain about 15,-
711 1-7 cubic feet. Suppose tho pumps aro
worked twenty-strokes in a minute wo have re
moved 314,285 2-7 cubic feet of air. Suppose j
tho plunger was let in at New York at the com
mencement of operating tho pumps, and tho
pumps continued to run, for iiftceen minutes in
which same rate 4,714,279 2-7 feet of air would
be removed and tho cylinder only containing
4,000,000, the plunger must reach Boston about
as soon as this work could bo performed so far
ns wo can see, and tho same result tho other
way. If the same number of pumps are worked
at the same rate and for tho sumo time, at New
York allowing the plunger to be put in at Bos
ton, when the pumps aro set to work, and all
the power used would bo applied directly to mo
ving tho plunger and load; the air being remo
ved from before the load no resistonco could be
had from it, and tho power applied to the
pumps is. directly applied to drawing the plun
ger. And if the numbor aro m>t sufficient to
perforin the work as fast us is necessary, moro j
pumps may be added or of a larger calibre; this
appears t< l>e good theory, anil so far as it has
been tried, is good practice.
Continental Depot forColtou.
Wo aro informed, through the medium of!
Southern presses, that tho cotton .Statesare ma
king a desperate effort to secure direct trade!
with the continent of Europe. Some European
houses, we are told, have actually taken the
mutter up in good earnest, and an agent is on
the way to attend tho groat Southern Conven
tion about to convene at Memphis. Direct trade
between tho South and Contiuoutal Europe is
sure to be had, and the consequences of this
direct trade will bo felt in tho remotest corner >
of the world, anil spread over ull tho cotton j
States of the South with a rush unprecedented I
in tho industrial development of our country.
Wo confess wo are no great believers in an j
immediate change iu the course of our trade,
following this pompous announcement of our
Southern brethren of tho press. “Direct trudo”
between tho South and tho Continent of Europe
exists already; Havre, iu Franco, being the
most considerable cotton market of the Contin
ent. Belgium, too, imports the raw cotton used
for the manufactures of Ghent, *.he Manchester
of tho Netherlands, and raw cotton forms a
considerable portion of our exports to Trieste.
And tho reason that tho Continental markets do
not equal that of Liverpool, is simply bocauso
England manufactures more raw cotton into
yarn and calico than all tho States of tho con
tinent of Europe put together; and it is a law of
commerce, as of nature, that tho largest con
tumors make the market ami regulate prices.
As long as Liverpool ami Manchester are in
close proximity, and us long as England exports
manufactured cotton goods, and especially yarn,
to all the States of the Continent of Europe
whore tho sumo aro not absolutely prohibited,
Liverpool, independent of tho advantages of its
geographical position, will remain tho princi
pal cottou market of Europu; all the efforts of
the Southern press and the Memphis Conven
tion to the contrary notwithstanding. And us
long as Liverpool continues the principal cot- j
ton market of Europe, the prices ruling there !
will control the prices of tho Continent, and j
men of small capital will find it more conven
ient and more profitable to purchase at Liver
pool, taking advantage of the market at proper
seasons, than to risk direct importations from
America. That there should be merchants on tho
continent of Europe willing to actus agents for an
American association of planters, thereby pock
eting commissions, is a matter oasily understood
by evory tyro in commerce. There may bo
those willing to act us consignees, advancing
ns high as percent, on tho whole cargo;
but the question is, will they buy tho cotton,
or merely act as agents for the owners?
Agiiin, what homo freights will our merchant
men have from the Continental harbors to tho
United States? Our ship owners will not be
satisfied with mere outward freights, and tho
emigrant trade, for obvious reasons, will not
easily he deterred from the Northern ports.—
New Orleans, the most favorable position for
the Southern emigrant trade, is far from otter
ing the emigrant the same facilities as Phila
delphia, New York or Boston; considering that
the ultimate destination of the emigrants them
flolvcsis in the Northern States, and not in tho
Southern ones. Tho few Herman and Swiss
oinigrants to Texas, Tennessee and Western
Virginia, aro as nothing In comparison to those
who intend settling in Illinois, Indiana, Wis
consin, lowa, Michigan >r Missouri; and all
these save money and time by biking one of tho ;
great Northern routes to the West.
As to tho statistics of cotton consumption J
on tho Continent of Europe, which is also os- !
tontatiouely ‘paraded in some of the Southern
presses, all wo have to say is, that German sta- ,
tistical writers fixed tho consumption of raw
cotton, in all tho Statos of the Zollvorein, pro- j
vious to the late revolutions, no higher than
60,000 bales annually; most of the finer calicoes
there manufactured being woven from British
yarn. The English aro the principal spinners
in Europe, furnishing the highest numbers of
yarn, not to tho Germans but oven to thoFronoh,
The Germans in general do not spin higher
numbers than 30, aud the French, at their
great manufacturing depot, at Muhlhouse, not
higher fcbna 120—England furnishing all the
rest.
As long as England preserves her suprema
cy us a cotton-spinner, and excels all European
nations in the weaving of cheap calicoes, “the
mission,” ns Sydney £>niitU called it, “of tho
Auglo-baxon race, ” —a central cottou depot on
j the Continent of Europe will be very little ser
! vine to our Southern planters, and they will-pro*
I bahly be called upon to pay the expouaoa of
such an establishment. It is not the producer
but the consumer, who regulates the market tho
: moment the supply is equal to or exceeds tho
demand.— Philu. Ledger:
The American Japanese Mxpnlit lon.
[From the Singapore Free Press, April I.J
Tho 1. .S. steam frigate Mississippi, Captain
Let, arrived hero on tno Jft.lh ult., and left this
for China on the 2'Jth This is one of the fleet
destined for the expedition to Japan. The re
sult ol this demonstration will bo known before
the close of the your. Should it be successful,
; it will exert a great influence on tho commercial
j nnd political affairs of this part of the world.
A large, populous and comparatively civilized
j empire, will be thrown open to commercial cn
j terpfise, and anew mulct will thus be made lor
j Kuropean manufactures which cannot fail, ulti
! tnateiv, to become extremely valuable to tho
, commerce of Europe and America. Hut even
should tho first efforts of the Uni tod States (iov
I eminent to establish relations with Japan prove :
unsuccessful, it is not likely that it will there- j
upon relinquish-its purpose. Further measures ,
; will he adopted, and it may bo assumed that the j
1 result iLsir, and will sooner or later bo brought :
* about. Having thus entered upon a different
j coarse ol policy front that wbieh has hitherto ■
appeared to characterize the l nited States gov
| eminent, viz : an aft.-uinenco from interference :
in distant quarters—we cannot suppose that
they will stop short, and content themselves
with their operations in Japan. It i.- probable
that they w ill next endeavor to obtain a footing
in China; and Chusan, which was so foolishly
given up by the English, will probably, ere ma
ny years elapse, be an American settlement.
There will he no lack of occasion for a quarrel
with the Chinese, if that is needed for tho ae- J
complishracnt of the plans of the United States, j
They have a Plenipotentiary in China, and he !
must bo UI-versed in tho business of his craft if
he cannot find cause fur offence when tho prop- ’
cr time has arrived. In tho Indian Archipelago, ‘
America has a wide and inviting field for the I
enterprise of her stirring and adventurous citi- ■
zona, and in any operations which they may un
dertake in that locality, they will bo free from !
the treaty engagements which have been found ]
so restrictive of English enterprise in this quar- j
ter. There is nothing to prevent tho Americans 1
from forming settlements nnd endeavoring to [
develop the commercial resources of Now (jui- j
nea, Borneo, Celebes, or any other quarter of |
tho Indian Archipelago, not in actual oucupa- i
tion of European powers. Wo should not re
gret seeing tlie Americans taking such a practi
cal interest in the affairs of tho Archipelago, as |
it is clear that the Dutch will not aid in open- \
ing up the Archipelago to other nations, and
the English government has for so many years
persisted in a vacillating and inconsistent but
in general obstructive course ol policy, that it
is evident we can little expect any effectual as
sistance from it. To the enterprise of tho Amer
icans wo must, therefore, look for these mea
sures which shall extend tho civilization and
commerce of western nations amongst the is
lands of the Indian aud Papuan Archipelagoes
whoso rich and varied natural productions will
repay the labors which may be bestowed
in making them available.
Singular Discovery.
There is nothing new under tho sun. Tho
.American coffin which attracted so much atten
tion at the Great Exhibition of 1,851, and which
by producing a vacuum by means of tho air
pump. was thought to bo an entirely new mo
thod of preserving eorpses from decay, has been
just proved to have been known in the middle
ages. While demolishing, a short time ago, tho
church of the ancient Welsh College at llelm
stodt, near Brunswick, a coffin made of lead, was
f,uml the lid of which was of glass of immense ,
thickness, contained the body of a young girl
apparently about twelve years of ago, which
still preserved every appearance of youth and
freshness although the coffin bore date 1461.
A private leettor from a bystander tells us
that—
‘•Tho face and figure of the child were per
fect as in life, not a single sign of decay being
visible throughout the whole person. The cheek
preserved itsdelieute rose-tint—the forehead its
snowy whiteness. Tho hair, which was of a
beautiful gold color, was parted on the brow
aud fell in long ringlets over the bosom, crisp
and fresh as though the child had lain down to
sloop tho moment before. Tho dross of white
satin embroidered in gold flowers, tho shoos of
’whito velvet, the lace apron, all seemed bright
as if newly purchased; and more astonishing
still, tho bunch of lillios held in the hand of tho
corpse still looked as fresh and moist as though
tho dew still hung upon it. Tho workmen
engaged in tho demolition of the building were
struck with awe. and immediately went in quest
of the chief magistrate of the place, who soon
arrived on tho spot, accompanied by several of
the inhabitants.
Unfortunately the worthy functionary having
recently been made tho victim of a practical
joke in tho town, and being half suspicious that
the same thing was intended, would not beloivo
in tho reality, and seizing a spade from the hand
of one of tho workmen who stood near, dealt a
heavy blow upon tho li l of the coffin, and
smashed one or two of the diamond-shaped panes
of‘glass of which it was composed. In a mo
ment, and while yet we gazed, a thin cloud
of dust or vapor, like a smyke, rose lip from
the coffin and dimmed tho sight, veiling the
corpse from our view. When it had disappear
ed, wo gazed downwards in awe; nothing re
mained of what had struck us with so much
interest and wonder—all hud vanished, nml left
nought behind but a heap of discolored dust, a
few rags of tinsel, and one or two dried bones?” |
The rage an l despair of Ilorr W ,the great
antiquary and vacant of the place, knew no
bounds. Jio did his host to collect the frag
ments that remained, and that same evening tho
coffin was conveyed to Brunswick, where it will
no doubt form one of the greatest ornaments of
the museum. There is no doubt that the high
preservation of the corpse had been produced
by the abstraction of all air from the coffin, nnd
it is supposed that the child belonged to some
great Professor of tho University, who had per
formed tho experiment in secret, as it is curious
that amid all this pains andcaro concerning the
body of the child, no means should have been
taken to preserve her name from oblivion. No
name is engraved upon the cntlin, not even her
initials—nothing but the date of tho year in
which she died or was buried (1401.) — London
