Modern Spiritualism.
It has been the boast of the South, that
Fanaticism ami other Urns of that ilk, so rife
among more hyperborean people, could neither
make headway, nor get foothold in our sunny re
gions. but alack ! how is our boasting docllcd—
how is our glory hoisted down ! We arc at last
invaded, ami will doubtless soon be overrun, by
the most rantankcroiis of all the isms, Spiri
tualism. Yes, —tho tables are turned, —they
wag their tops at us, —they stand on one leg in
derision, nnd will soon knock our philosophy
into a cocked hat, or some other misshapen
substantivo. Our subjugation being thus inevi
table, I venture to opine that we had better not
“go it blind.” With this opinion strongly im
pressing me, —I send, for the illumination of
your readers, nn exceedingly instructive letter,
on tho philosophy of tho thing, which is, as
you will perceive contained in a portion of a
copy of tho “Chimborazo Lightning Bug,”—
which was sont to an ingenious manufacturing
friend of mine, because it contains a luminous
description of anew machine for making silk
purses of pigs’ ears. My friend wishes to retain
that part of the paper, as he entertains the most
sanguine hopes, that, by a small alteration in
tho feed rollers, he will be able to apply the
machine to the conversion of Goats ears; which
on account of the abundance of the raw mate
rial, it is thought w ill prove a very profitable
enterprise. You will therefore please return
the “Lightning Bug*’ when you have dono with
it- OLIVER MY3T.
Tho following is the letter referred to above :
Messrs. SrAftGLK A Mcdd.
Gentlemen :—I have noticed in many of the
Ilebdoinndals, nn article purporting to bo an
explanation of Physiological and Psycological
exacerbations and parturbations, by which are
produced, the spiritual manifestations in which
our fellow citizens are at present so profoundly j
interested. I take tho liberty of sending you j
an extract from the article named, —with a few
remarks.
“Tho only true and legitimate manner of ac
counting for tho raps, is tho physiological de
fects of tho tuotuhraneous system. The obtuse
ness of tho abdominal indicator causes tho car
tilaginous compressor to coagulate into tho
diaphragm, and deprossos tho duodenum into
the (landnngo. Now if tho raps wore caused
by tho rogation of the electricity from tho ex
tremities, the tympanum would also dissolvo in
to spiritual sinctum, and tho olfactory ossifica
tor would ferment and become identical with the
pigmentum. Now this is not tho case; in order
topioduco tho raps, the spiritual rotundum
must be elevated down to tho spiritual sporo.
Put, as I said before, tho inorior ligaments must
not substoud over the digitorum sufficiently to
disorganize the storielotum.”
From the learning, no less varied than sound
which is so abundantly ostensible in this brief
extract:—as well as the lucidity of tho style and
scientific accuracy of most of its statements, l
am convinced that it came from no other mind
than that of the distinguished and erudite Dr.
D. R. Y. Phunnmachcr, Professor of Rysabuly
stic Philosophy iu the Uyehondoriffio Institute.
Put, notwithstanding tho alitudoof tho esteem
in which 1 hold tho Dr. both as a scholar and
a gentleman; and the delight with which I al
ways listen to his prelections on Tadhutepus
and other kindred sciences,— I must on this oc
casion take tho liberty of dissenting from some
of his conclusions.
It will ho perceived that tho Dr. bases tho
subjugation of tho parenthetical desquamation,
upon tho “ Physiological defects of tho mem
braneous system.” It is quite evident from this
very doubtful assumption, that the professor has
read with attention, tho very interesting me
moir of Scratchispow on the Dyscophrustic re
lations of tho Flaudango; but tho erroneous in
ferences ho has drawn, lead mo to suppose, that
ho has either not seen, or not well considered
tho essay of Dundorloffor on tho Pereholium of
the Spiritual Siuctum. Ho has also, manifestly,
overlooked those carefully considered treatises
of my own, on the llypcr-olcetrical Vogitntions:
otherwiso ho never could have ventured to make
the statements referred to. -
The true solution of tho Spiritual Phenome
na iu quostion is tlio following, for which I am
mainly indebted to a recent Monograph of J.
Krackhisjokes, on Essential Baldordash :
Tho mombrancous system being Photogristi
cally intact, and the Hypascordatum quadra
ted—the defluctitionul oscilations are not amen
able to tho dobonturc of tho Ornithorinchits. but
to that of tho Storicktal Parenchyma : hence,
when tho Electrical Vogitations oxosmdsef, tho
cartillaginous compressor, and tho Flandango,
both vamose—and the Spiritual Rotundum is
left suspended in the Sub-medial dixit. Now,
it might be supposed, that consolidarity would
necessarily result; but, when it is remembered
that the Kudatoh is distended by the exubriety
of Chimpanzctic glum, it will be seen that the
conclusion is inevitable—that tho “ Tympanum”
will “ dissolve in Spiritual Sinctum;” and tho
Olfactory Gssifieator must “become identical
with tho Pigmentum.” Hence tho raps. A
moment's consideration of the subject, will con
viuoo any ono at all acquainted with this very
interesting branch of tho dufunct science, that
tho learned FrofcSSof greatly overrated tho
danger of disorganizing the Stericlotum, In
deed, tho Mognlodontis is in much greater jeo
pardy ; but, in truth, there is Always a sufficient
amount of Tlyaloyd Cpaguluiu present, to pre
clude any danger of such an accident.
The Tippings and the Turnings of Tables aro
capable of satisfactory explanation from tho
same data.
I Have endeavored to present the subject in
tho plainest language of which it is capable;
and if you think your numerous readers, or any
of them need to be enlightened on this subject,
you nfc welcome to place this in your columns.
Yours in Nebula,
A. 001*11 EU, 11. I*.
A East Age.
The following story is perhaps a little over
done, but is nevertheless a very fair illustra
tion of the spirit of this age. We have always
contended, that in the matter of steamboat ra
cing, the passengers, as well as the officers of
boats, wore not a little to blame for the disas
trous consequences so often attendant upon rac
ing. There are a good many persons like the
old lady described below, who would forget to
“save their bacon*’ under the excitement of the
contest, and be willing to mala* almost any
sacrilico in preference to being distanced by
“an old boat.” A n exchange paper says :
An old lady in Cincinnati had large quan
tity of bacon to ship to New Orleans, where .she
was going herself to buy supplies. She stipu
lated with the Captain of a steamer, that lie
should have her freight provided ho would not
ntcc during tho trip, the Captoin consent
ed, and tho old lady came aboard. After
the second day out, another steamer was
seen close astern (with which the captain had
been racing all the time) which would every now
nnd then come up to the old lady's boat, and
then fall back again. The highest excitement
prevailed among tho passengers, as tho boats
continued for nearly a day almost side by side.
At last the old lady, partaking of tho excite
ment, called the Captain and said, “Captain,
you itiii t going to let that old boat pass us, are
you/ “Why. 1 shall have to, Madam, as I
agreed not to race.” “Well, you ean just try it
a iittlc*. that wont hurt.” “But, Madam, to toll
youthe truth, I did.” “Gracious ! but do try it
a little more—see, the old boat is almost oven
with us,” and a loud cheer arose from the pas
sengers on the “old boat.” “I can't raise any
more steam, madnm,” as all tho tar and pirn*
knots arc burnt up.” “Good gracious, what
shall wo do: see, tho old boat is passing us. Is
there nothing else on board that will make
steam?” “Nothing, Madam—oh, eh, [as if a
m-w idea struck him] except yoqr bacon.”—
“Throw in the the bacon,” shrieked the old la
dy, “throw in bacon, then Captain—thdro's moro
hogs to honfc, and I'm not a gwino to be passed
by such an idd hulk as that !”
High-priced PictureH.
At a recent sale in London of tho Spanish col
lection of pictures owned by the late Louis Phil
ippe ex-King of the French, many of tho works
brought the highest prices. The -portrait by
\ elasquez, of tho Minister Olivaroz was sold
for $1,551). A portrait of Philip IV. of Spain
also said to bo by Velasquez copied from the
celebrated original of the Madrid Museum, in
the third or vague manner of the painter, sold
for $1,250. The finest Murillo in tho collec
tion was the much-injured canvass w hich onco
represented, in all the splendor of color and ex
pression, “St. Joseph and tho Infant Christ.”
but,'damaged as It, was, it sold for $2,200. The
“Conception,” in life size, though deprived in
many places of its glazings, brought $4,050. It
is a composition in tho second manner of Mur
rillo. A smaller “Conception” by Murrillo, in
which the characteristics of the master were
also distinguishable, was knocked down for
$ 1,350. The “Virgiu and Child” broughtsl,7so.
Another “St. Joseph and Infaut Christ,”
though not a favorablo specimen of tho master
brought $1,500. A picture of “Jesus and St.
John” on tho banks of tho Jordau brought $3;-
Tho Conception,” by Murillo, sold in Paris
Inst year, brought over SIOO,OOO. It was pur
chased by tho French Government in the face
of a struug competition. —New York Evening

False Packed Cotton*
Tho Liverpool Times of May, 11th, has tho
following interesting article on this subject.—
As considerable dilfurenee of opinion at pres
ent exists in the Cotton market hero respecting
the return'of false packed Cotton, wo think it
will not bo but of place here to refer to the sub
ject. The prevailing rule hitherto acted upon in
oases of false packed Cotton has been as follows:
“All falso packed cotton to bo returned within
twelve months from tho day of sale, and to bo
paid for at the invoice pricq.” This rule, like
most regulations for tho guidance of trade, has
been found to require amending to meet the al
tered eircumstaucos of tho trade, arising from
a greater proportion than usual of tho .Ameri
can crop proving for the last two seasons of in
ferior qagJity, which has caused tho lower de
scriptions of American Cotton to become very ir
regularly packed; so much so that large lots
bought on speculation during tho excitement
in November last were subsequently returned
<n the market declining, nnd bona ji.de mer
chants wore thus unwittingly compelled to suf
fer a very heavy loss, owing to the rejection hy
tho speculator; or rather the repudiator of Cot
tons as false packed, of so low a quality as
scarcely to allow of thoir being regularly pack
ed. This repudiation was not confined to a few
instances, and in one case 700 bales were re
turned to tho merchant, which otherwise, even
with a falling market, would never have been
rejected.
Os course, under such circumstances it became
a matter of consideration to nil interested
n tho trade, and various consultations and
communications took palace between the Man
chester Chamber of Commerce, the Liverpool
American Chamber of Commerce, and the Li
verpool Cotton Brokers’ Association, when, af
ter mature deliberation by all, it was resolved
by the two first-named bodies, and unanimous
ly adopted on repeated occasions by tho latter,
that tho following should be the terms on which
false packed Cotton should ho returned:—“All
claims for falsely packed Cotton to bo made,
and thoCottonjreturned twelve months
lrom the day of sale. Tho Cotton returned to
be paid for at the price which tho Cotton, if reg
ularly packed, would he worth on tho day on
which it is received here in Liverpool.'’ The
Cotton Brokers’ Association, Agreeable to such
resolutions, resolved that the same should come
into operation on the Ist of May, but, to tho
surprise of the trade generally, such a courso
has received the greatest opposition from a lew
buying brokers, self-styled ••spinners’ friends,”
(but who, nevertheless, buy Cotton on specula
tion.) refusing to unite in carrying out such a re
solution of tho association. The only ono like
ly to sillier from such a rule being adopted is tho
spocnlafor, who, according to the old rule, was
enabled to a considerable extent to speculate
with impunity,—for. should his anticipations
of gain from the products of the spinners prove
false, and the market decline, he had but to
mako his Cotton false packed (no very hard
task in the low descriptions of American chief
ly purchased on speculation,) to escape from
sutiering the loss which tho fall in the market
would otherwise inflict upon him.
The .piuser, consc-pieutly, has everything to
SAVANNAH, WEDNESDAY AFTER NOON, JIN E 8, IS5;{
i gain hy the “new rub ,’ for although, should
tho market decliue, ho would, in a falling mar
ket, only obtain tho value of tho cotton on tho
! bay it was returned, as if perfect, ho would still
| bo enabled to replace it with sound cotton oil
tho same day, and, in case of a rising market,
he would be sure to obtain all the advantage
: which under tho “old rule’* ho could not. For
instance, It., a spinn *r buys 500 bales of cot
ton- to cover contracts entered into -the mar
et advances Md per lb., when lie discovers that
HID bales have been falso packed and worth id.
t“ jfd. per lb. less than the other lot), to restore
them would entail a loss un lor tho “oi l rule,”
tor ho would only bo enabled H> obtain the
price paid for them, whilst tinder the “new rule”
In* would be enabled to recover tin* full advance in
the market value, and so be enabled to replace
the same in his stock without loss. All circum
stances considered, we cannot but think the
! rule the one most likely to prove satisfactory
■ to buyer and seller; ami although considerable
j difficulty has been so fal’ experienced in carry -
j ing it out, we have no doubt of its ultimatesue
; cess, for spinners generally, who think for
! themselves, will soon perceive tho advantage's
they gain by the new system. In fact, wo aro
I informed that, fully three fourths of tho buyers
! are not only willing, but anxious, to purchase
■ cm the now terms, and in many oases, on the
: new terms only.
Tin* Ericsson Engine.
The last number of tho American Journal of
j Arts and Sciences contains a lengthy paper on
the Hot Air Motor, from the pen of Wm. A. Nor
tan, Esq., of Yale College. 110 sums up his
j conclusions as follows :
“1. That Ericsson’s Hot Air Engine, com-
I pared with tho condensing marine steam on
j gine, in its most economical operation, has
j shown the ability to do the same w ork with the
I use of from 1 -f* to I-3 less fuel; and, that if its
: full estimated power should hereafter be devel
oped, the saving effected would be 70 percent.
“2. That for tho same actual power, its
; weight is about three times ns groat as that of
the marine steam engine, and that in case its
! estimated power should be obtained, its weight
j would he as much as 30 per cent, greater.
“3 That in respect to the space occupied l y the
| engines and coal, tho advantage is decidedly in
favor of the steam’ engine.
“4. That the great weight of tho engine, in
proportion to the power developed, must pre
vent, for the present, the realization of a high
; speed in the propulsion of vessels. At the
i same time it is to bo admitted that the full es-
I timated power is adequate to the production of
I high velocities. Time alone can decide the
question whether or not this maximum power is
really obtainable.
“5. The great weight of tho engine and space
occupied by it in its present form, will, in all
probability prevent it adoption for tho purpose
of inland navigation and railroad locomotion,in j
preference to the steam engine. If used as a
land engine, these features will be less objoe
tionbale; accordingly it is only in this form of
applications and in those eases of marine navi
gatton in which speed is likely to be sacrificed
to economy of fuel, that the ealoric engine may
be confidently expected to achieve decided tri
inpli over the condensing steam engine.
“Althoughthis discussion has brought us to
the conclusion that tho new motor is not likely
to equal tho extravagant expectations which
arc so widely entertained with regard to its ca
pabilities , still it must be freely conceded that
tho invention of a now engine in respect to
which a just claim to superiority over tho steam
engine can be asserted, in any particular, is u
groat achievement, ami that the ingenuity and
mechanical skill displayed in the in.veution and
construction of the Caloric Engine cannot be
too highly extolled, i
Influx of English and .Scotch*
A Galway paper thus notices ono of the great
changes w hich emigration and tho Encumbered
Estates Commission are bringing about in Iro
land, namely the influx of English and Scotch
settlers; The districts from which their for
mer occupants have emigrated are likely to lo
tenanted by English and Scotch agriculturists:
nnd it is by no means an improbable or fanciful
speculation to conjecture that before many yean
the western distriotof Ireland will be as little
Irish as Mid Lothian or Suffolk. The success
for whioh they are proverbial has attended tho
Scotchmen who hnvo settled here within tho
last few years. Thrco Scotch farmers lmvo re
cently taken the lands of Castloton, on tho
banks of Lough Corrib, which was purchased
a short time since in tho Encumbered Estates
Court by Mr. Guiness, of Dublin. Sorao far
inors from Durham, and other parts of England
have this week been inspecting the farms near
Tunm, and also in tho immediate vicinity of
Galway ; and they have stated tuat many oth
ers will shortly come upon a like speculation.
Tho Editor of the New York Journal
of Commerce says that on Thursday, he con
versed with a Southern planter from the North
ern part of Georgia, who has conio on to en
gage men to work on his plantation. “He has
commenced harvesting, and req lives additional
help: but tho enhanced value of slaves since
the Abolition agitation places it beyond his
ability to purchase a large supply, and white
labor can be employed more economically than
that of hired slaves.
The Governor of New-York has vetoed
the bill to enlarge the basis of banking in that
State. Tho bill proposed to extend tho basis of
banking by admitting city stocks. This exten
sion he says would induce a desire oil tho part
of city corporations to create debts; and bethinks
that at the present time, when banking profits !
are increasing so rapidly, a due regard for safe
ty demands that those profits should Ho limited,
otherwise there must be a revulsion in the mon
ey marketsouii.
